When the daughter challenged her mother by scent marking. It’s a sign of adulthood, territorial claim, and an attempt on restructuring leopard solitude.

Funny how lions and leopards are so different. A lion joins the other pride while a female leopard is let go after a few months.

Male lions form coalitions that often protect and sire multiple prides.

The mother leopard keeps her cubs with her for 18months - 2 years. Often the male is the first to leave. The mother is hostile because she's in heat looking to mate so she can't afford competition from her daughter to find a mate. I've seen a mother hostile to her in a much more aggressive manner when he returns to her whilst she expecting new cubs. It's a way to push them out on their own so the species can survive.
@isaz5976 жыл бұрын
@Unwanted Nature you could be right the mother may not be in heat. She's like you said done with the cubs as they need to make their own way in life. The hostility towards her daughter rather than both sub adult cubs is directly linked to her chances to mate & having another female who is capable of producing cubs in her territory could limit/interfere with her chances to get the best mate. She can smell that her daughter is mature enough to ovulate.
@isaz5976 жыл бұрын
@Unwanted Nature Unwanted Nature Unwanted Nature are you some kind of expert? because I've been around animals & been watching many documentaries especially on leopards (my favourite animal). Which part of "you could be right" (mother might not be in heat) & me mentioning the mother being territorial & the need for her to have her space to bring on further cubs in her lifetime ( which is me agreeing with you basically saying the sub adult cubs need to move away from her) didn't you understand?

Some may think this is cruel or harsh. But it's vital for the daughter Leopard to learn this one last lesson from her mother. That lesson is kill or be killed. The lesson is to stand up for oneself and to stand ones ground. And never cede territory. Notice that the mother didn't kill her own daughter? That mother being bigger, stronger and more experienced could have killed her own daughter right then and there but didn't. She would not have been a caring mother if she didn't let go of the apron strings, if she didn't set her daughter on the path of independence and complete adulthood 🐆💚🐾
