It's the choice of the music directors on who would be the singer. Let's leave the matter to them without raising stupid comparisons. As we all know O P Nayyar didn't use the voice of Lata Mangeshkar. That doesn't mean Lataji was not as good as Ashaji or OPN was a bad music director. So as R D Burman had preference for Kishore Kumar than Rafi Saab. But both were legends. Similarly Salil Chowdhury and Mohd Rafi both were greats.

यह सम्पुर्ण का अर्थ समझाओ, यह होता क्या हैं? यह लोग कहते है फिल्म "मुकद्दर का सिकंदर" मे सिर्फ चार लाईन के एक गाने के लिए रफ़ी साहब को बुलाया गया क्योंकि इतना दर्द भरे आवाज़ मे उस गीत को कोई नही गा सकता था। फिर जब मैं इनको बताता हूँ फिल्म "दो रास्ते" मे दो गाने मोहम्मद रफ़ी के थे, एक गाने किशोर कुमार और एक गाना मुकेश के थे चारो गाने उस ज़माने मे सुपर हिट हुए और आज भी है, मगर मोहम्मद रफ़ी के दो गाने रोमांटिक गाने थे और किशोर कुमार, मुकेश के गाने दर्द भरे गाने थे, तो क्या उनके हिसाब से अब यह मान लिया जाए की यह दोनो दर्द भरे गाने मोहम्मद रफ़ी के बस की बात नही थी, इसलिए संगीतकार लक्ष्मीकांत प्यारेलाल ने किशोर कुमार और मुकेश को मौका दिया, किशोर कुमार ने गाया था " मेरे नसीब मे ए दोस्त तेरा प्यार नहीं।" मुकेश ने गाया था "दो रंग दुनिया के और दो रास्ते"। मेरी सलाह हैं गाना सुनो, इनको मत सुना करो।

I feel Salil Da was more interested in female singers and always preferred Lata ji. Wherever he had to take Rafi Sahab in any film for songs which may be out of pressure from Director, producer, actor or lyricist or situation. Some other singers & other legends like BRC may have added fuel to the fire. Only Shankar Jaykishan gave the best justice to all singers like Rafi Sahab, Manna de, Mukesh, Kishor Da. There could also be a possibility that Bengali lobby was always against many singers from west with only exception of Mangeshkar's sisters who had monopoly and were in a position to outcast any composer for any nonsense with them. The weakness of Rafi Sahab was he was too gentle with zero politics and he never had his lobby created in the music industry. People liked Rafi Sahab out of his qualities, nature and never out of any threat.

Who knows Anil Vishwas and Salil Da these days but Rafi sahib is still relevant because of his mesmerizing voice quality. The time gave both these music director an opportunity for a short term but later washed them away from the memories of listeners. On the contrary, when they found that their song is not easy to sing by the other singers, they took shelter of Rafi sahib. Rafi sahib never criticised any of them till his last moment which is nothing but his greatness. SC was the greatest composer in Bengali music since Tagore. Hindi film music was a small, relatively uninteresting and purely commercial part of his output. And yet he composed some of the best songs in that genre. Rafi’s voice, which was a high baritone, wasn’t suited for most of SC’s songs. Could he have sung the songs in Anand or Do Bigha Zameen as well as Mukesh or Manna Dey?

Nothing could be more further away from the truth. Sachinda's first big hit with Rafi as a composer was Guru Dutt's Pyaasa in 1957. Before that he already had a superhit career studded with many blockbuster songs- sung not only by female singers but also by male singers, right from 1947. His male superhits in this period include- Upar Gagan Vishal (Manna Dey), Ye Raat Ye Chandni (Hemant), Jaye Toh Jaye Kaha (Talat), Jeevan Ke Safar Mein (Kishore), Dukhi Man Mere (Kishore) among many others. So, your statement regarding SDB's early career is as off the mark as is your bogus regret, stemming out of blind love for one to that extent where you fail to see the quality in 'other' singers (many of whom were rated highly by Rafisaab himself). Given how wonderful man Rafisaab was- with a true sense of appreciation for others' talents, I am sure it is he who is regretting having a fan like you...

It is Salil Chowdhury's or Anil Biswas loss because of their ego. That is why no one knows these music directors. In the other hand SJ duo who started with Rafi Sb hit song "Main Zindegi Se Hardam Roota hi Raha Hoo" they used Rafi Sb in almost all of their films except few Raj Kapoor films. How odd that you never ask why Naushad, for example, always preferred Rafi over other singers, even for classical songs like Man tarpat hari darshan ko aaj. All music directors had their preferences. To single out Salil Chaudhury because he did not use Rafi as much as others did, is pointless. He gave unforgettable songs, whcih is all that matters.

मैं एक सिंगर कंपोजर म्यूजिक डायरेक्टर हूँ। मेरी आप यूट्यूब पे कई गाने अपलोडेड सुन सकते हैं। मेरा यक़ीनी तौर पे मानना है कि जिन म्यूजिक डायरेक्टिर्स ने रफ़ी से किनारा बनाये रखा तो ज़ाहिर सी बात हैं कि उनकी कॉम्पोज़िशंस रफ़ी साहेब की आवाज़ को ध्यान में रख नहीं बनाई गई थीं। उन संगीतकारों की करियर इतनी परवान नहीं चढ़ी जितनी उन संगीतकारों की परवान चढ़ी जिन्होंने रफ़ी साहेब की आवाज़ के मद्देनज़र रख कम्पोजीशनस बनाई। मिसाल के तौर पे अनिल बिश्वास रफ़ी साहेब पसंद नहीं करते थे तलत महमूद को पसंद करते थे तो उनके ही साथ साथ रहे नौशाद ने रफ़ी साहेब बेस धुने बनाई तो लंबी करियर भुगती। अनिल बिश्वास कहीं बिछड़ के रह गये। उसी तरह सलिल चौधरी के सामने शंकर जयकिशन को देख लीजिये। थोड़े दिन पहेले प्रेम पत्र शशि कपूर और साधना की देखी उसमें दो गीत सलिल चौधरी ने तलत से गवायें वह भी शशि कपूर के लिये तो पर्दे पे अजीब सा लगता था। उल्टा इक़बाल क़ुरैशी,हंसराज बहल, G S kohali जैसों ने रफ़ी साहेब की आवाज़ ले कर अपने गाने अमर कर दिये। चित्रगुप्त ने सलिल चौधरी से भी लंबी करियर रफ़ी साहेब की आवाज़ को ले कर ही बनाई। मदन मोहन मेरे बुझुर्ग मित्र स्वर्गीय रवि साहेब लक्ष्मीकांत प्यारेलाल S D Burman कल्याणजी आनंदजी, जय देव जैसे कई कइयों ने रफ़ी साहेब की आवाज़ के बलबूते पे अपनी करियर बनाई। नौशाद O P नैयर शंकर जयकिशन की तो बात ही क्या कहिये। R D के 60 के दशक में रफ़ी साहेब ही थे उनका झुकाव आशा भोंसले ( जो रफ़ी से मैंने अच्छा गाया कहके ख़ुद ही ख़ुद की पीठ थपथपाती फिरती है ) के O P Nayyar को छोड़ने के बाद R D साथ आने के बाद ही बदला फिरभी रफ़ी साहेब को पूरी तरह इग्नोर नहीं कर सके जो “ क्या हुआ तेरा वादा अवार्ड विनर गीत गवाना पड़ा। O P नैयर की करियर क्या रह गई रफ़ी साहेब की जगह महेंद्र कपूर को ले कर और बाद में O P नैयर का पछताना जग ज़ाहिर है। C रामचंद्र भी रफ़ी साहेब को पसंद नहीं करते थे मगर क्या करें जो गीत Male Singer में पॉप्युलर हुए वह सभी रफ़ी साहेब की ही हैं। मेरा दावा है कि रफ़ी साहेब ने लता और आशा दोनों से ज़्यादा गीत गायें हैं। देखो रफ़ी साहेब की अनबन किसी भी मौशिक़ार से नहीं थीं। लता की S D बर्मन से अनबन और O P नैयर ने तो एक भी गीत नहीं गवाया शंकर से अनबन शारदा को मिले गीत सुमन कल्याणपुर के हिस्से गये गीत और छोटे छोटे संगीतकारों के लिये रफ़ी साहेब जीतने सुलभ थे लता नहीं थीं। और रफ़ी साहेब के ग़ैर फ़िल्मी गीतों का तो ख़ज़ाना भरा पड़ा है। अब आशा की बात शंकर जयकिशन लक्ष्मीकांत प्यारेलाल कल्याणजी आनंदजी मदन मोहन नौशाद चित्रगुप्त रवि साहेब इन दिग्गजों ने लता से ज़्यादा गीत गवायें आशा के मुक़ाबिल।O P नैयर की all time फेवरेट रही मगर उनसे भी अनबन हो गई। रफ़ी साहेब ने सभी के सभी संगीतकारों से भरपेट गाने गाये। अब रही रफ़ी साहेब की 80 में मौत और उसके बाद लता आशा के गीत तो मैं दावा करता हूँ उनकी प्रस्तुति हिंदी फ़िल्मों में कम ही होने लगी थीं अनुराधा पौधवाल अलका याग्निक जैसों ने पैर पसारने शुरू कर दिया था। तो लता आशा के हिस्से में उनके रिटायर्ड होने तक 100 से ज़्यादा गीत नहीं होंगे। यह मेरा दावा है। यानी कुल मिलाके रफ़ी साहेब ही थे किशोर के आनेके बाद भी रफ़ी साहेब का ज़माना कभी गया ही नहीं। हाँ एक दो साल के लिये कम ज़रूर हुए मगर रफ़ी साहेब फ़ारेग नहीं हुए मौजूद रहे और रहेंगे। आपसे मेरी गुज़ारिश है मेरी चेनल पे जाकर मेरे गीत सुन लीजिये। kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGG0eoChiMacmbM please subscribe and press like button. Really sad to hear about the dislike (if not hatred) of Salil Chowdhari for Rafi sahab, and that he was forced to record some songs with Rafi sahab under some compulsion or duress, despite his personal hatred for Rafi sahab. However, the loss was Salil Chowdhary's only, not Rafi sahab's. Today the whole world realizes the greatness of Rafi sahab and recounts it endlessly, but there are very few who would even condescend to remember Salil Chowdhari. He may have been a great music composer and music director, but this facet of his character, regarding his dislike for Rafi sahab is difficult to understand. O. P. Nayaar did not like Kishor. Nausad did not make Kishor sing to his tunes. It does not mean that Kishor was not a great singer. It happens everywhere, bhai saab. Salil thought his tunes would be justified by Talat Mahmood's silken voice, Mukesh's depth and Manna's calisthenics. This is why he made them sing to his tunes. Again, that does not at all mean that Salil was not great or Rafi was not great. I can tell you Salil & Rafi both were the highest level among the creative geniuses.

My uncle was an editor of The Hindu. We belong to Kolkata but we are not Bengalis by birth. He used to talk about Bollywood and I heard him saying how some of the Bengali musicians and singers did not like Mohammad Rafi because they could not bear him. Salil Chowdhury was also called Zaleel Chowdhury or Sanki Chowdhury in some circles. Indeed he did not like Mohammad Rafi and that's why he always ended up composing soft tones suitable for Manna De or Mukesh. One can imagine how narrow minded that man was. Mohammad Rafi could sing soft and high pitch songs equally well. He was the only singer who could modulate his voice to suit an actor. He could sing devotional songs, ghazals, qawwalis and folk songs without any difficulty. S D Burman did not have any problem with Rafi but his son R D Burman deliberately opted for Kishore Kumar to avoid Rafi. Manna Dey was great fan of Rafi and often admired him. Salil Chowdhury was often told why he did not like a man like Mohammad Rafi who was an extremely gentle man who never disliked anyone. Today nobody knows Salil Chowdhury but the world knows Mohammad Rafi. There are people who have built temples in his name.

रफी साहब का कद और नाम संगीत की दुनियां में सलिल चौधरी से कहीं बड़ा था और है। रफी साहब को सलिल चौधरी से किसी प्रमाण पत्र की आवश्यकता नहीं थी न उनसे काम मांगने की ही आवश्यकता थी। सलिल चौधरी को ही अपने कुछ गानों को गवाने के लिए रफी साहब की आवश्यकता पड़ी थी। सलिल चौधरी का काम हिंदी फिल्मों में एक दायरे में सिमटकर रह गया। जबकि नौशाद और शंकर जयकिशन से लेकर लक्ष्मीकांत प्यारेलाल तक अधिकतर संगीतकारों की पहली पसंद रफी साहब ही बने रहे।

From what we have seen and read, most of the music biggies from Bengal didnt like Rafi saheb - these included Anil Biswas, salil chowdhury, RD Burman, Hemant Kumar - Some ppl also say that these Bengalis biggies tried to ruin Rafi's career ( n some also say that Lata and Asha, especially Asha was part of this anti lobby against Rafi ) - The big debate of who is better , Rafi vs Kishor is also created by them as most of these Bengal biggies try to project Kishore as the better one ( Asha Bhosle never leaves a chance on TV to talk shit abt Rafi ) - However all their plans didnt work and Rafi emerged as a real winner till his death - While Anil Biswas and salil chowdhury totally faded away in the 60s, Rafi ruled the music charts. Both Rafi and Lata are no doubt the supreme voices of Bollywood - however one should not forget that Lata earned it with the support of every actor and music director, while Rafi had so many ppl working against him - apart from the music guys, even actors like Raj Kapoor, Dev Ananda, Manoj Kumar etc were not really in favour of him - despite all these traps , he proved his value.

Why make so much fuss on this? Salil da didn't like Kishore Kumar for a long time though he was also a Bengali. He preferred Mukesh and Talat Mehmood. Salil da was a great music director and he had every right to have his own preference.
