I wonder more about the fate of those double agents and that POW. There's a similar story about a like tactic but I don't know if it's true. During the Great War (1914 to 1918) the allies created a fake airfield to trick the Kaiser's military into thinking there would be an imminent push in a certain area. This was a period when pilots used to chuck large grenades out of the cockpit by hand, let's not forget. After a couple of tentative flypasts by German reconnaissance aircraft the they responded with an all out attack on the airfield with wooden bombs. I hope it's true but I'm not sure it is. I heard a very familiar tale about the US and Japan from WW2. Can anyone tell us all anymore about this? Another good thing about this video is that it's meant I've had to finally learn how to spell "reconnaissance". I wonder if Thoughty would like to do a piece on the SOE agents who were parachuted into France and Belgium, straight into the arms of the Gestapo. There's a definite story there.

Why is this detail not in history classes? At least in the history classes I had in 6-9th grade. This story kind of reminded me about the Empty Castle strategy you talked about in a previous video. My grandfather was hit on the head with a beam on the boat transporting him to Normandy, so he never actually disboarded. He was eventually awarded a posthumous Purple Heart for the resulting brain injury. That didn't help him when he was discharged and returned home to find his family had moved when they heard about the massacre on the beach--his paperwork had gotten lost in the shuffle, so they were unaware that he had survived and needed his loved ones.

Hey Thoughty, cool video! I know it wasn’t mainly about dazzle camouflage but I’ve always been intrigued by it. Just a note though: The main impetus of dazzle was to make it harder to get correct images in large binocular rangefinders (the ones in superstructures of battleships & in their turrets); they worked by adjusting the images in each eye until they matched. Dazzle was supposed to make it harder and one assumes it worked...

The total number of Allied casualties on D-day was fewer than 40% of predicted estimated losses making the Normandy invasion one of the most efficient and effective military engagements in modern history.

He oughta do a video about the english retreat where they quietly moved an entire army out from underneath enemy emplacements at night, while replacing them with dummies, rifles rigged to fire occasionally, and fake supplies. They were trapped, but managed to save nearly the entire force from a completely untenable situation.

This story brings to mind the so-called, Philadelphia Experiment and the air-dropped dummies (code named "Rupert") prior to D-Day. This video is well researched! Many thanks, Arran!

There are several companies who still make full size inflatable tanks, vehicles and even fighter jets. They are mostly used as props when filming war movies.

Great video but I was hoping you'd touch on the audio component of the sting: units traveling around playing audio recordings engines and men at night at high volume to imitate the noises of troops on the move.

As true is there’s nothing funny about war, you’ve gotta admit that’s freaking hilarious! Hitlers hubris had led himself to believe he was unstoppable and nearly god-like during his reign. Can you imagine how embarrassing it would have been for his soldiers to find out that their so very precious furher had been played like a harmonica that may have dropped a decent bit of his street cred. Wonderful video! Thanks Thoughty2.
