You do really beautiful work on your own and also from other people’s patterns. I really liked what you said about learning about leather work by working from someone else’s patterns, and the freedom of working from an existing pattern with known parameters. Like you in this video, I’ve been considering that I might like to learn and grow from working with and modifying someone else’s existing patterns. It would definitely remove some of the fear of messing up a bunch of leather on something I’ve only done semi-successful mock-ups of in felt!!! I love the modifications you made to this bag, and definitely recognize the frustration of working on something and discovering only afterwards that it has been scratched or damaged in the process of making it. Thanks for sharing your process. Really, really beautiful work.

Thank you SO much for uploading this video. It's great to see a craftsman advocating learning from someone else's pattern. So many who have been making their own patterns tell beginners to make their own, which is rather disheartening sometimes even if it is probably sage advice. To make your own, you have to learn what pitfalls there may to consider in making one. Lots of those things are learned best by using someone else's pattern first, at least that was the case for me. You're the first person I have seen who has (publicly) identified the positives in doing so; the ability to focus on getting the details right while still knowing you will produce something useful even if it's not perfect, and that you won't waste a whole load of expensive leather. Really refreshing, thank you!

Tanner. Another wonderful video. Clean, concise and really informative. No one has (up to this point) come up with the perfect method to apply Tokonole to edges without it getting all over the front of the piece. Still working on that. I have seen: Fingers, wire applicator, micro applicator bottle, tiny foam in an alligator clip. Tried most of these. I still get splotches on my front facing pieces. But, thanks for video. Shows the importance of having a really good walking foot sewing machine. Some day. Maybe.

My machine scratch one of my bags to where I couldn’t buff it out. So I scotch taped all the screw heads and rough areas of the machine and so far has worked fine for me

I really identify with what you said at the beginning of the video, I also get uncomfortable using other maker's patterns because it feels like I'm being lazy by not putting in the work to be a good designer or I feel guilty like I'm stealing. I have been trying to get better at telling myself that these patterns are available because these makers want to share and also telling myself that most of these makers probably learned using other people's patterns and have incorporated what they have seen and learned into their own designs. As I'm trying to expand my business and skills as a leather artisan I'm going to be acquiring bag patterns from makers so I can use what they have learned and applied. Thank you for the video

That’s awesome- we share that feeling then! I think there’s so much we can learn from each other, and in fact you can see many ideas in this bag borrowed from old military satchels, like the one seam turned in and the other one turned out.
