In the days before modern sewing machines, pants would have been a tall order. People who don't sew don't understand what a feat of engineering a pair of trousers is. So garments that just draped down over the middle were much easier. And they were more comfortable and even more utilitarian sometimes. I've worn a kilt for some time now, and they rock. Great video. God speed on your new film project!

It would be great if it were possible to smuggle into the script several dressing-up and/or slice-of-life scenes wherein the functionality of fashion can be explained. Just adhering to historical garments without understanding wouldn't work, or it would make certain people think of the clothes as comedy because they fail to comprehend it. Excellent video.
@galenusv78314 жыл бұрын
Lol. Leather pants! But what they actually had in those times were leather gloves. If I'm not mistaken, Fiore dei Liberi mentioned he wore leather gloves. I assume they were an expensive piece of clothing.

Leather could be had, for sure. (Outlandish and pricy, but affordable at least.) But being tailored in a manner resembling a pair of modern chinos or jeans? Yeah that's at least post-1800's at best

So Robin Hood men in tights is more historically correct than many of the modern movies?
@titanscerw6 ай бұрын
Yes :)
@craigkdillon4 жыл бұрын
Are you sure that is correct?? I believe that Celtic tribes in Gaul, in Caesar's time, wore pants -- that is, clothing that covered each leg individually. Just like the "hoods" were worn by the Quebecois in Canada, long before being adopted by inner city youths. Clothing develops, typically, for practical reasons. Pants were useful in the cold north, not togas or tunics.
@RealCrusadesHistory4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I did mention that pants have existed a long time, it's just that they really weren't widely worn during the medieval era.
@craigkdillon4 жыл бұрын
@@RealCrusadesHistory Then you are saying that, although they were worn 1300 years before the Medieval era, that they went out of use....is that right?? If so, that is interesting. Why would such practical apparel fall out use? Just to make a come back later?? I tend to think that they were stayed in...just maybe not by the nobility -- which may have adopted styles reminiscent of the ancient revered Roman Empire. But peasants and serfs who had to work the land, could not do outdoor work in flowing robes. Pants are practical. Unfortunately, histories don't usually focus on the mundane things of life -- like clothes and styles.
@RealCrusadesHistory4 жыл бұрын
Craig Dillon I can say why the change. The reality is though pants were not widely used through most of the medieval era in Europe. The same was true for all levels of society. Peasants also used breeches and hose.
@deem74784 жыл бұрын
The "pants" in the "Knightfall" opening love scene with Joan/Guenevere were face-palming. The Templar Landry walks through the streets of Paris in his gambeson and "pants," the quilted gambeson an article of under-armor, before climbing through yonder window a la Romeo to tryst with his mistress. Unreal. According to the Rule, this alone should have landed him in irons.

Two questions about medieval costuming: 1) why do all medieval hats I've seen look dumb and 2) how do I not die in a wool tunic in august
@franknada82354 жыл бұрын
1) because medieval people were badass and didnt give a f.k 2) because youre too dumb to strip it off (just kidding)? Besides, the property of wool is to regulate temperature. It warms, yes, but what people often don't know is that it also makes a "micro climate" that has a "cooling" effect.

Also important to think about when making a film or television series - don't actually dress everyone correctly, good Lord what a lot of effort and money that'd take. Trousers are fine on anyone who is wearing boots and a tunic because they're functionally identical in that case. Of course going out to get the breeches and hose for instances where it could be seen is awesome to the nerds in the audience.
