Fortuner is seriously a work horse, but if you consider it as a luxury or status symbol, people outside india are laughing at it! Both innova and fortuner are more of people mover and budget cars rather than calling it a status symbol. I personally chose rav4 over fortuner because when I saw fortuner interior and drove it, I felt like driving a truck than a car! Its not worth money you pay, if you don't have some regular extreme offroad to go. There are much better cars from competition you can chose in most developed countries and people hardly prefer fortuner. I totally agree with Australian car reviewer. Its one of the worst cars that Toyota makes currently.

In india Fortuner being a big car with high stance, acts as a symbol of power projection in rural and semi urban societies, especially in north and noth west india. Apart from that businessmen and builders use Fortuner for the same reason too, to command respect among peers. I dont know why particularly this car, but that's actually the case. It has nothing to do with how good or bad the car is, how modern or outdated it is, how overpriced it it, or even how much features it lacks. Also people buying Fortuner buy them because of their high price. 😂. If Fortuner sells for like 25 lac in India, they wouldn't buy it. 😂. Toyota knows what they are doing. Thats the mentality behind its purchase decision. And also a herd mentality works too. Apart from that the pop culture effect also plays a big role, most of the pop songs or rap songs in that part of india features Fortuner. The final step of upgradation is to a Wrangler or a G wagon. Its depends on the valuation of the land sold to builders. 😂. But the entry point has always been a Scorpio or a Thar. Fortuner is the mid level upgradation, actually.

I'm here in Melbourne Australia and i literally laugh and feel bad at the same time for what Toyota is doing in india just rebadging cars and selling dated Fortuner, i just moved here few months back and i see that Toyota is the no 1 selling brand here, there cars are everywhere. they have cars in every segment no matter if its a hatch, sedan, compact SUV and big SUVs or pickup trucks...Cars like RAV4 and Kluger from toyota sells more than Fortuner here. Even their Yaris cross and Corolla cross can be a great competition to Our Nexon/brezza and Seltos/Creta. Looking at great and interesting Toyota cars here, i feel TOYOTA ain't very serious about Indian market.

I once made a tour of Hyderabad, Bangalore and Vijaywada and I agree. 90% Fortuner owners were chauffeur driven with all owners looking same. White shirt, white pant, gold chains, rings on every finger, red vertical tilak on forehead, white apple phones in hand, talking loudly on phone about property deals or meeting with CM. 😅 And all pot-bellied. It depends on owner's occupation, a construction contractor, mines owner, transporter, liquor dealer, mps, mlas, busy businessmen would anyday pick a reliable and abuse friendly car over a feature rich but less reliable car, cz they won't be able to enjoy features due to hectic schedule and can't afford to take their car to service center frequently due to lack of time. Also they get GST refund that way car costs a lot less to them. Whereas a white collared mnc executive will pick a german or toyota camry type car, fortuner is a practical car for Indian conditions anyday it's just that interiors need revamp now.

Govt doesnt want indians to own cars. If you look closely and the legislations they have passed recently. In 10 years the govt will hate anyone who will own a car and doesnt use public transport. Thats why the taxes are sky high even though there is nothing in india to tax that much. Even the car sales in india are only 15 percent of overall car sales in china or even less. For example I read somewhere audi sold or mercedes sold a million vehicles in china in the span of 2-3 years. There was a data. Still the tax es there is half of india. Hence, it keeps raising prices every 3 months. Hell, Toyota can sell Fortuner at even 50 crore and these fat-cats will continue to buy. A typical Toyota owner may be worth 20,000 crore rupees but he will still buy a Fortuner. Even if he can afford any luxury European SUVs. The current price of fortuner in India cannot be justified at all for what you get in it.

Fortuner for less than 30 lacs is really not a bad deal. But for 55 lacs, it really does not make any sense. Toyota is milking their brand image way too shamelessly with the fortuner. I've seen some sub 15 lac cars in the Indian market with better interior materials than the Fortuner.

There is no good car in 50 lakh segment of fortuner size may be thts y people buy it bt I m sure if any other good company introduce a good suv in that segment than fortuner will be gone for sure bt Indian taxes made imposible to launch suv by new companies at affordable price bcz if they want to launch than they have to manufacture here first which is big problem for new companies.

Yes you are totally right ….. people in India are illiterate…. They decide car is powerful or not by their exterior …. Not by their actual specs …. Fortuner has most crappy interior in the segment and even i20 has better interior secondly it has underpowered engine that produces only 170 hp which is very low for such high weight vehicle …… and don’t say its reliable because there is nothing in metal box so there is no chance of anything getting broken 😂…. Now people will comment and argue ….
