Stamford Bridge, in York, was the site of a famous battle in 1066 where England's newly-crowned King Harold Godwinson and his army defeated the invading Viking army of Harold Hardrada. The battle is famous because it marked the end of three centuries of Viking raids into England and because King Harold had to return south immediately after the battle to fight against the invading Duke William of Normandy at the more famous Battle of Hastings.
@joshbrown22174 ай бұрын
Yep and there is a folk tale about how there was one Danish viking who was blocking the English from crossing the bridge. I found this quite funny as I found this out when Chelsea won the champions league and Christensen was having a standout season. Felt very much like history was repeating itself there

@@joshbrown2217The invaders stopped in 1066 were Norwegian and not danish though. King Harald Hardråde (often translated as harsh ruler), was king of Norway, and his army mostly consisted of veterans from the Varangian guard and Norwegian Levy's. The big viking on the bridge was most likely Norwegian. Just like Rollo, the ancestor of the Norman's, most likely was from around Aalesund in Norway. Although because of the danification of Norwegian history during our time of being ruled from Denmark through a personal union of the crowns, the Danes have claimed a lot of things that are known to be Norwegian, as danish. Maybe that's where the confusion comes from.

@mikeroyce8926 Thanks you! Most sources that I found make no reference to the ownership of Stamford Bridge prior to the Mears ownership, however this article from 2011 claims the freehold of Stamford Bridge was owned by a John Stunt, who had acquired Stamford bridge from James and William Waddell. According to the article, the Freehold to Stamford bridge was sold by John Stunt's sons to the Mears brothers, after his death. backpagefootball.com/the-incredible-story-of-chelsea%E2%80%99s-106-year-stay-at-stamford-bridge/27640/ Another blog post from 2009 seems to match up with these events: www.theshedend.com/topic/12023-1-twenty-eight-years-bc-1877-1905/ Hope this is useful!

I know Fulham fans hate us, but I quite like them. The plucky underdogs who, in fairness, do actually overachieve and do quite well (despite the yo-yo club status). Their miraculous escape from relegation to playing in the Europa League final only 2 years later was frankly legendary, and I've had a soft spot for them ever since. Legitimately have a strong dislike for Diego Forlan for scoring the winner in that game lol

Was a regular at the bridge with my grandad in the 80s, watching them claw their way out of division 2 and into the middle of division 1. Stamford bridge cafe was always on the itinerary for sausage chips and a big mug of tea. Fulham Broadway wasn't quite as salubrious back then as it is now, i think the weekly turnout of cops on riot horses was a bit of a downer on property prices. They horses were scary to a 10 year old. Grandad followed Chelsea all his life following in his grandad's footsteps. They were from South east London and had been arsenal fans until the new club formed, apparently the move to north London was not popular in my family.
