Any secular major musician that hits this level of fame like Taylor Swift, Madonna, Michael Jackson, etc., tends to get this kind of pushback from the ultra conservative fundamentalist evangelicals. This isn’t new, but the conspiracy theories that are dreamed up are usually pretty entertaining for their comedic value.

As someone who used to dance professionally (on much smaller tours than Taylor’s, but still quite long), the standards for modesty change DRASTICALLY because most of the time you’re wearing undergarments that cover you entirely (tights, bodysuit, leotard, booty shorts, etc) and the clothes you put on top of that (your costume) don’t actually NEED to cover anything at all. And I promise a show like Taylor’s, where she has multiple costume changes, dancing etc - she’s never ever going to risk having a costume slip and accidentally flashing someone. It usually feels like you’re wearing an entire outfit and then extra clothes on top lol even if it looks like the extra clothes are your whole outfit. At the very least you get taped/pinned in so it can’t move off your skin. So most costumes end up being much less “modest” despite the fact that every inch of your body from neck to wrists/ankles is 100% covered. Any “skin” you may see is almost always just an illusion - you’re looking at pantyhose people 😂

It's not based on logic and reason. It's based on religious dogma. The fundie crowd would not be satisfied unless she was wearing a turtleneck and an ankle-length skirt. That's not all. They would have to fit loosely on her legs, hips, and bust. They cannot allow clothes to be too tight on her feminine body, or she might become a "stumbling block" and a temptress to young men. These are the same idiots who got mad when Britney Spears was performing in crop tops back in the 90s. They were absolutely furious about her belly and lower back being visible to the audience. It's every bit as stupid as it sounds. The purity culture in this country is absolutely ridiculous. Over 90 percent of people admit to watching p**n in anonymous surveys, yet they get hopping mad if a celebrity (allegedly) shows a little skin.
@samjensen3927 ай бұрын
I haven’t watched the whole video yet (only at 23:27), but as a Swiftie myself, rolling my eyes at the “SHE’S A WITCH!!” crowd, all I can really say is, “God forbid a woman enjoy an aesthetic.” Like, be serious, if she was actually casting spells and stealing souls, do you think she’d make it this fucking obvious? She talked openly, in her interview with Apple Music about evermore, about how she just liked the witchy vibe of the “willow” instrumental and ran with it. Jesus Christ, get a grip, it’s really not that deep.
@Elleshifts047 ай бұрын
I just want to say that not everyone in the “she’s a witch!” crowd means it in a bad way. I’m a huge swiftie, she’s my favorite artist. But I’m also a Pagan/witch myself and I just get those vibes from her. The Prophecy, for example, has lots of lyrical double meanings that reference tarot cards. The most obvious being “cards on the table, mine play out like fools in a fable” referencing the fool card. Frankly, I would consider that cultural appropriation if she doesn’t believe or practice it herself, and was just going for the “cool” aesthetic of people being hunted down and burned. I also think the fact that you believe witchcraft has to be kept secret, and that it’s casting spells or stealing souls, means you don’t know much about it. It’s just part of a religion like Christianity, it’s actually OLDER than Christianity (their traditions like Christmas were taken from Pagans), and it’s not at all like what’s in fiction. The most commonly practiced forms of witchcraft are divination (like tarot cards), manifestation (could be what Mastermind is about), and crystal energy. Spell jars/casting is a thing, but not everyone does it, I don’t. I didn’t mean to write so much but Taylor and witchcraft are my hyperfixations so.

Like with many conspiracy theorists and fundamentalist beliefs, it's always fueled by a desperate need to be special. They have the secret knowledge, they're special, they see through the lies everyone else falls for, they know the world is magical.... Etc etc. It's sad but not surprising that fundamentalism correlates with belief conspiracy theories so heavily. Lack of critical thought or examining your beliefs, gullibility and willingness to follow charismatic leaders, and need to feel special are all key features these people get sucked into these beliefs.

I agree that But Daddy I Love Him for me has hit the hardest in terms of religious deconstruction. I also love the lines from that song “dutiful daughter, all my plans were laid, tendrils tucked into a woven braid, growing up precocious sometimes means not growing up at all”. It gives that image of being raised to be a good Christian girl and stay in your box, and on the outward seeming so grown up and put together but in reality you’re just being dutiful and not truly learning from experience. That song just has such beautiful imagery and storytelling, and it’s so fun to sing it at the top of your lungs 😆 it’s very cathartic! 😅

@user-xr7ci8tf3e I love that she’s making this music while she’s at her most-talked about point in her career so far. I think it’s going to help a lot of people. I love that she was a factor in your deconstruction ❤️ and to me the lyrics are the perfect balance between being subtle but also direct enough to understand what she means, so the people who need it don’t get too defensive. Obviously the hard-core Christians will get defensive, but I think for many it will just be something to think about that’s from outside their bubble. I’m so curious about her own deconstruction process and I wonder if she’ll ever open up about it. Obviously that’s up to her and if she’s comfortable with it and no one needs to know, but hearing others’ stories was a big help for me in my deconstruction. But either way I’m loving the hints she’s giving through her songs 🥰

The whole, “She’s 34 and unmarried with no kids,” thing as a criticism just boils my blood. She’s been trying to find someone this whole goddamn time! She wants to get married! She wants to have kids! She was in a relationship for six years, and she left because he wouldn’t put in the effort or take the next step. She rebounded with someone who promised all those things and then pulled the rug out from under her. I mean, just listen to The Prophecy; she’s literally begging on her knees for someone she can spend her life with. Not to mention, all the people complaining that she’s still not married are probably the same people who’ve mocked her for dating for the past two decades

One of my friends met her about 6 years ago via a meet and greet pass (if I remember correctly she won a contest for them) and she said that Taylor was really kind to her and everyone else in the group. Took as much time as she could with everyone there. People who send her or anyone else threats and messages like that are very immature. Same with the people who come up with conspiracy theories about her and every artist. They should look into going to a therapist for their issues because no one in their right mind would waste so much of their time doing things like that. It's interesting how people have accused musicians of "demonism" and "witchcraft" basically since music existed. Paganini was famously rumored to have sold his soul to the devil because no one could believe that he was that good at violin without supernatural assistance. Some even believed he was the devil incarnate and made up all kinds of weird rumors about him, like lightning striking his bow during a concert, and people seeing a doppelganger of him with horns.

Friday the 13th is considered unlucky/cursed because it was the day/date of the epic massacre of The Knights Templar in the 1300's. Dozens of them were rounded up at dawn, tortured, and burned at the stake by the government & the Catholic church ostensibly for being heretics, but most likely to usurp their power and wealth, TBH. This event is forgotten by many, but the day/date has since been a bad omen/portent of doom down through the centuries in European-based cultures. Also? I loved the "Baker's Dozen" joke. When I was around 13-14 years old (I am 45 now) there was 3 girls in my class in school who were mormons. (Although that name was not used here. At the time they called themselves "Smith's venner", meaning "Friends of Smith". They no longer use that name either.) I was curious as to why they all had so many siblings and a friend told me their religion called for every married couple to aim for having 12 kids, but never more than that. And that was because if they had more, the 13th kid would be a Judas, a traitor. Now, my source was another kid my age, so questionable at best, but I talked to others since then and it seems to be the accepted theory by all. Of course I never dared ask the mormon kids themselves. 😅 But in my defense, they got teased enough for having lots of siblings and having to wear long skirts and braided hair all the time, so I didnt want to add to their feeling different in school. They were nice kids and I hope they felt included despite some people being idiots.

It’s clear to me there are certain themes, archetypes, and historical figures that she gravitates to in her writing. I really enjoy her ability to connect something she’s personally going through to something beyond her. It’s part of what has continued her success, to make something that’s so personal to her so universal. Witchcraft themes are especially heavy because of the ‘witch hunts’ that have followed her throughout her career- 2016 especially. I found it surprising that you said no one talks about The Prophecy. Somehow I breezed past all those other religious references in TTPD and assumed the outrage was towards The Prophecy. Anyway, loved this video. Thank you both, as always. 😊

Sooooooo many Christians have a double standard wherein “if we do magic it’s good, and we won’t even call it magic, but if people we don’t like do magic it’s evil/witchcraft/sorcery”

That trading spouses episode altered my brain chemistry forever. Also I’m in my mid thirties and don’t think it’s weird to hold a friend’s hand. Candace just doesn’t know what it’s like to have friends.

My feelings towards Taylor are neutral I'm simply watching this because I like your channel. But omfg to learn at nearly 39 years old that "concert amnesia" is a legitimate thing is SO FKN VALIDATING. I had no clue! 😭 Over the last 25 years I've been to so, SO many live shows..holy crap the $$ I've spent on tickets and travel..! Only to barely remember anything I've actually seen lol. I can only recall a handful of songs, definitely don't remember full set lists. But I remember the energy. The feelings. I know for a fact I had an amazing time at virtually every concert and it's always bothered me I couldn't remember most details. Now knowing this is a thing that happens to many people and it's not just my crappy memory makes me so happy. 😭

I just listened to the book Die With Zero. It's about spending money on experiences doing things we love or giving to people we love during our lifetime. It hit a chord with me in a similar manner. A lot of memories are even better down the road because we remember the happy emotions and not the stressful parts. ❤

Zombia Taylor (28:20) is a reference to her being a ghost of herself, like the character Miss Havisham in Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. She is even wearing a white floofy wedding dress in the performance like Miss Havisham. Also she is sort of a thwarted bride like Miss Havisham. That's one of the big themes of ttpd.

I have a few perspectives here: I used to be an assistant to the youth pastor for a conservative Presbyterian church. At every conference we took those kids to, there would be a Christian music CD table with these guys who would always ask you what your favorite secular music was and then hand you a CD saying “this is a Christian version of that artist.” The Christian music industry is way more commercial than you’d think it would be. The other is that I live in the town Taylor “grew up in” in Tennessee. It is in no way a quaint small town. It’s a suburb of Nashville on Old Hickory Lake. There are 2 million dollar houses here. Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash lived here. Conway Twitty lived here. It was the place to live for country artists in the 70’s. We’re about 15 minutes from Nashville metro city limits and 25 minutes away from Broadway in Nashville. It’s a suburb, a bedroom community. We have Target, Sam’s Club, and basically every chain restaurant in existence. Also, in like 2010 she donated money to the city for a new playground at the park. All the little plastic flags on the play castle have her signature engraved into them. It’s kinda weird.

Why can't these people hate her for a semi-valid reason like idk the hundreds of tons of carbon emissions? Honestly as someone who is on the neutral to dislike end of the spectrum of caring about Taylor they need to stop being such pick me's and let her live her fucking life

It’s crazy how these performers get out and perform for such long times- I suggest also looking at Bruce Springsteen- he goes out at his age and does 3-4 hour shows, he may not have the choreographed dances that Taylor has but he is out there dancing, jumping, and getting crazy- even at 74 years old. He’s amazing and his stamina is similar to Taylor. I love them both so much! (I suggest watching some Springsteen from 2016 or so! Those shows were amazing, though he still does it nightly, a lot of us die hard fans don’t care for his static set lists.)

yeah with post concert amnesia, Ive been to 1 irl concert (got another in September omg Im so exited for Aespa!!) & I didnt remember the whole thing on the way home lol (it was CNBlue btw) Ive also watched several livestreamed concerts (this is common in kpop since 2020 btw) & Im damn glad I reocrded them cos I could NOT remeber half the things that happened it was like "damn that opening was dope" "go off Taeil & Haechan" "damn Johnnys naked now" "Yuta kicked his shoe into the crowd lmao" "oh no my son Doyoung is crying 😭 my HEART" & thats all i remembered from this 3 hour long concert lol... (even worse was the like 6 hour long one from SMtown, they do it every year & every year i remember like half the performances & then the DJ afterparty (I highly recommend watching these btw they're streamed live, free on KZbin) @46:50 Im aorace, I hold my friends hands, I also sometimes hold my parents hands, its just a sign of affection bro... @53:50 I've found yet another way to bring this back to kpop lmao but one of my ult groups is called NCTDream when they debuted they were all teens & made 'younger' sounding music (still absolute BOPS though) but as they grew older their music changed wioth them, theyre now all adults & have a lot more grown up music (still BOPS omgtheyresogood), they grew with their audience & now they doing shit like THIS (the one on the left is Mark debuted at 17 now 25, the one on the right is Jisung debuted at 14 now 22): kzbin.infodebVBCjlXvY , also this is 'certified babygirl' line (both debuted at 16 now 24): kzbin.infoS8s52Wg732c Also Jordans hair looks SO PRETTY in this vid, idk what youre ding but it looks gorgeous!

From the perspective of a fan who has been dissecting her discography since 2008, i have honestly seen signs of her unpacking and deconstructing her faith for years now- arguably as far back as the speak now album. I think this is such an interesting topic, great video!

@@JordanandMcKay The kids wanted me to stay for supper and ice cream so i watched when i got home. Their dad (my nephew) and I ended up in a discussion afterward, prompted in part by this video (which I hadn't yet seen) and the Mark Pope hire at UK (which prompted me to give up Kentucky basketball and then by logical extension all U.S. sports above high school level). I left the church shortly before he was born and was shocked to hear I'd been a Mormon.
