I think the fact that nearly every college graphic design/art class only teaches with Adobe products' UI and interface in mind is also a contributing factor in why most people can't easily quit Adobe. Trying to follow along with lessons with an alternative program just isn't very simple to do.

It's exactly why Maya is used instead of blender for 3D modeling software. Beyond the fact that companies are scared of not obsessively paying for things, it's also because either they get some kind of deal with them, or they know that 90% of the people coming out of college (who also got a severe discount) will get their company to buy and use Maya if they aren't already because that is all they know. Autodesk actually sucks about having stable software just as much as Adobe.

Years ago I paid about $500 for a license for Adobe’s web suite. I mainly just bought it for Photoshop. A couple of years later randomly one day my software stopped working and said it was an invalid license and that I needed to buy their subscription to continue using the product. After that happened I didn’t care about “doing it the right way” to support the company anymore so I just pirated software so I could continue using what I had already paid for.

The termination fee part is absolutely disgusting on their part. I use adobe with a student discount that they require me to renew every year. My discount ran out and they started charging me the regular subscription without notification. When i went to renew the subscription after noticing that i was charged full price, i found out i couldnt simply renew it. I had to cancel my subscription to renew my student discount. Lo and behold, there was the termination fee, a whopping 160€. Yes, 160 god damn euros. I skipped the phone thing entirely and was lucky that their twitter support employee was really generous in canceling my subscription for free given i was gonna restart it instantly but with a student discount. I was lucky. But a termination fee for a subscription? What? Why?

The mindset of "Adobe is getting my creative things done" was the main barrier for me. But once I get out of my comfort zone and invest only 1 week, stopped taking projects for 2 weeks... I replaced - premiere pro with Davinchi Resolve (Free) - Illustrator with Affinity Designer 2 (One time fee) - Photoshop with Affinity Photo 2 (One time fee) - and switched to Figma (free) from Adobe XD long time ago. You asked "why does Adobe have such a disparity between happy employees and angry customers?" To me it seems obvious. I worked at both a monopoly and a consultancy with competitors. The difference in stress level is so apparent. Being an employee of a monopoly is great - there's no competition and no pressure to improve your product and to provide great customer service. There is no disparity, it's a direct relationship: the customers are angry BECAUSE the employees are too comfortable not doing their jobs to a high standard.

@harryhack91
@harryhack91 Жыл бұрын
It might be true, but remember that the developers are like the front-line soldiers, they are just following orders. If a developer is asked to implement an intentionally badly designed feature, they will do it. Going one step up (or more) in the hierarchy, if a software architect/engineer is asked to come up with some silly feature that is unlikely to provide any real value to customers but it would be easy to implement, they will just write the design for it. So... ultimately the upper management is the one really at fault here. Of course, there are probably some lazy developers out there, but then again, the people in the upper management should be the ones responsible to prevent that behaviour and to scold those lazy bastards when applicable.

@@harryhack91 yes agreed management is responsible. I guess no one likes to be strict for no reason - why have tight deadlines and stress your engineers out when it has no effect on the bottom line? But that eventually breeds a "comfortable" culture that will hopefully get outcompeted.
@Sandstimes
@Sandstimes Жыл бұрын
The issue isn't people getting "comfortable". You're right in that their monopoly is responsible for the shit costumer treatment, but not because their employees aren't suffering enough, it's because the higher ups know they can get away with jacking up the prices to their hearts content because they're running the industry standard. I think drawing a correlation between treating your employees with basic decency (which should be the standard) and treating your customers poorly is setting a bad precedent

I began hating Adobe all the way back in 1994 when they acquired my favorite graphic design software company at the time - Aldus Corporation. Most people don't even remember Aldus, but they pioneered a large portion of the graphic tech that Adobe based their future success on. They were the makers of Pagemaker (first desktop publishing program), Photostyler (a competitor to Photoshop), After Effects (still the same name with Adobe), Intellidraw (Vector drawing - features merged with Illustrator), Freehand (vector drawing purchased by Macromedia), and many other graphic and pre-press software products. My hate for Adobe grew each time they devoured another competitor. When they eventually released Creative Cloud it was the culmination of their efforts to monopolize the graphic design business. I use Affinity products, Davinci, and anything else I can in order not to use Adobe.

Adobe used to be considerably pro-independent creator. As soon as they went to subscription rather than allowing the option to own your software, the writing was on the wall -- they didn't care about independent creators, or the hobbyist. At this point as solo and freelance creators we're all looking for an alternative to Adobe, and pretty much everything else that started off as pro-creator and became anti-creator as soon as the money got too good.

There was a time when I wanted to learn to use photoshop. I ended up using GIMP instead because it was free. When I finally had my own money and could afford it, they had switched to this dumb subscription thing and I decided it wasn't worth learning. Although it could have been useful, I avoid subscription stuff. I hate all this subscription stuff nowadays. Unless you are required to have it for your job, it's not worth it. There are things I want to do that I can't do without photoshop, so I simply just give up on it or ask a friend who has photoshop to do it for me. It's less accessible to non-professionals. Plus, when I was younger (in the age of Myspace), it seemed half the people I new had photoshop. It was THE program to have if you liked editing photos or creating art. I don't know many people who use the program anymore. Even friends who used to gave up on it when it went to subscription. I think that's kind of sad.

Imagine you just need an electric drill for one hobby project, but you were forced to pay subscription to 'own' that drill for the month/year. That's not all, the supplier forces you to buy the entire toolkit bundle with tools that you don't even use. You were promised tool upgrades regularly but the upgrades weren't even good. @RizqanArt AI art is a totally different thing. It's a whole new technology and the implimentation of a new technology should always be encouraged. People who worked with horses probably didn't like the car, artists probably didn't like the camera, people whose job it was to write probably didn't like the printing press and the people whose job it was to handle lights probably didn't like the light bulb. However, your life is significantly better due to these inventions. In the past, you needed money or skill to get art you can use. Today, you can do it for free without skill. That will enable so much creativity once the technology develops further. Institutions are inherently conservative and will fight any progress as new means of production tends to make their leaders lose their jobs. The way to counter-balance things could be to create a social safety net and make progress a cultural norm.

Plus AI art is limited by the data it is trained on, it is in no way shape or form better than someone who actually knows how to tell a story. There's just nothing else that can offer such a complete package for everything and have it all work together under 1 subscription plan. I think my biggest gripe with Adobe would be not only the sheer price but the fact they abuse copyright so other software developed can quite literally not compete with them because adobe has the full rights to particular functions in their programs. You don't notice these until you switch from photoshop to any other software that may be cheaper, or even free. One big example would be one of their image stretch tools which you cannot find in other programs because they have the rights to it and an individual copyright over the function.

They said no, it was better for the world for that interface to be free instead of owned by a single company. Like Disney, a company which was built on the back of public domain properties and which then goes on to freeze the copyright laws in their favour, Adobe does likewise it seems. I still love audacity, I don't use it often, but when I do it gets the job done, so it still lives on my machine despite recent controversies

There is one service I can think of, Amazon Prime. In india, they increased price, and for the price, they decreased the services. Sure, Prime video and Prime music are there, but the basic 2 day delivery option was pulled back, and some deliveries are still chargeable. My financial services and daily life are so tied with Amazon that there is not enough incentive for me to move out of it.

I ditched Adobe about 5 years ago. The main apps I used were Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. I've moved from Photoshop to GIMP, and it does most of what I need, but does lack some features. The one thing I really miss is the ability to work with CMYK images, and I haven't found an open source solution that can handle them. I imagine for many people working with print, that would be a deal breaker. For InDesign I've moved to Scribus. Again it's a little less capable, but I do feel InDesign tries to do too much, and I can generally get what I need done, but sometimes I need to produce elements in another app and import. The app I'm happiest with is my replacement for Illustrator, which is Inkscape. It took some getting used to, but now I like it more than I ever liked Illustrator. I find it suits the sort of vector art I do best. This could be because I do a lot more vector work than I used to, and I fully accept that just because it suits my vector work, doesn't mean it will suit everyone.

I'm using those 3 the most too and few years back I decided to check out Affinity (while still being in uni). Now I'm using it for all my personal stuff (still using Adobe at work, but it's not mine) and recently even bought the Affinity 2 Universal License that gives me all 3 programs on both desktop and ipad for less than if I'd buy them separately. IMO it's close enough to the Adobe programs to do most of the work. There are still some functions lacking, but they keep progressing (and most surely can't just copy everything from Adobe :P)

The main programs I use are Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop, Audition, and Illustrator almost everything else is bloatware for me. The issue of why I don't feel like I can get rid of Adobe comes down to the next reasons. 1. I do not know which programs could replace all of those (especially after effects) 2. The learning curve of using a new software, some like DaVinci can imitate Premiere controls, but other than that it uses very different interface methods that would need at least months to master. 3. The workflow compatibility cannot be achieved easily with independent programs. Being able to go back to the source file and edit it in its intended program and throw it back into the project you are working on is very easy. And to this date, no other set of programs can do this it seems. You have to render out, import check, make changes and repeat.

Reminds me of autodesk, they don’t allow you to buy lifetime versions of most of the software they make like AutoCAD and REVIT, they charge hefty monthly/yearly subscriptions instead, with the same amount they charge yearly, you could actually buy the lifetime licenses years ago for the same software. Luckily there are some nice CAD alternatives. I completely ditched AutoCAD and payed for a lifetime license for BricsCAD, best decision I could’ve made.
@troybaxter
@troybaxter Жыл бұрын
How much does BricsCAD cost, what’s the program size, and how does the user interface compare to AutoCAD? Currently I use the Free Version of Fusion 360, and I used to tinker in Inventor back in college (I could download it for free for a year using my student account). I would like to find an alternative to Fusion 360, cause I know features will slowly get removed over time from it, and Auto Desk will force you to buy their licenses. So far I have stumbled across FreeCAD (which is meh), and OpenSCAD (a very weird CAD software that functions similar to C++).
@FredEdmilson
@FredEdmilson Жыл бұрын
@@troybaxter well, BricsCAD has different modules, so you'll have to buy a license that provides you with the BricsCAD module that satisfy your needs. There's BricsCAD Lite that it's preety much the equivalent to AutoCAD LT and it goes for 590$ for a lifetime license, it will allow you to do 2D drafting; There's BricsCAD Pro that gives you the ability to do 2D drafting and 3D modeling, the lifetime license costs 1,265$; There's BricsCAD BIM (the name is self explanatory if you work with BIM, imo it works very similar to SketchUp) and it's license costs 1,890$; You can also buy a lifetime license for BricsCAD Mechanical with more mechanical design tools (great for mechanical or product engineers) - costs 1,780$; There's BricsCAD Ultimate that is a bundle of all the versions above and the lifetime license costs 2,100$; And finally, my favorite, there's BricsCAD Civil for infrastructure Design (and i kid you not it's the works the same as AutoCAD Civil 3D). The setup's size is around 693 MB; The UI is very similar to AutoCAD and the commands are very similar to AutoCAD's, plus, they have new great features that they teach you on youtube or the software itseld for better workflow, you really will adapt very quickly to BricsCAD if you used AutoCAD a lot like i did, it will feel like you haven't changed softwares at all. I didn't try the apps you mentioned but from what you said it sounds trash, i also used LibreCAD, IronCAD & AlibreCAD and i have to say that they either had compatibility issues with my dwg's or they performed horribly, BricsCAD is actually more optimized and it optimizes your drawings as well so it can run smoothly even in slow machines. From my personal experience, i don't think you'll go wring with Brics, especially coming from Autodesk, it's a shame Autodesk is forcing expensive monthly/anual subscriptions to their users, i remember a time you could actually pay for the software and it was yours for life, I'm not a fan of the cash grab, and i found the ability of buying lifetime licenses way more appealing because people that actually depend on CAD to make a living won't always have projects to work on a consistent basis, so having the convenience to work whenever you want without worrying about paying a subscription everytime, especially when the subscription prices are close to the lifetime licenses is much more appealing to me.

Honestly, there is a huge creative software opportunity for a halfway motivated developer out there. The fact that there is Olive Video Editor, Affinity, Krita, GIMP, and Inkscape makes me think the time is ripe for a suite of apps to happen in a low-cost or even open source ecosystem. Some brilliant soul or souls need to integrate GIMP, Krita, and Inkscape into one piece of smooth running software in order to kill Photoshop (which is absolutely love, but cannot afford). Tough job, but it would be a game changer. Blender is such an amazing piece of stable software - it is the proof of concept for this notion of an open source or low cost solution for independent creatives.

I was absolutely shocked since Illustator is a decade or so older. Those functions like constraints, variables and the mirroring tool would be so useful. But as i understand, the issue is that illustrator does not work with actual formulars. A circle in Illustrator is not actually perfectly round

As a freelancer, I don’t think it’s over priced at least not for my use case. I use PS, AI, ID, XD, LR and occasionally AE. I also use Adobe’s fonts and Portfolio. I am one of the few users who don’t hate them but don’t exactly love them either. The bugs and lack of new code in their software is what really gets to me with their apps. Their customer service isn’t the best but I’ve had a lot of good experiences with them with a few lacklustre ones as well. Great video btw. I agree with many of the points you made here even if it doesn’t exactly apply to me in all cases. Adobe should definitely be doing a lot better for the amount they are charging customers.

True, but having money flowing in for doing absolutely nothing, also gives way to non-innovation. Before their subscription model, Adobe used to have it's programmers find ways to make the applications better, either by fixing bugs, adding features or moving things around to save time. Bottom line is that now, there is no effort on doing anything new or innovative, just milk everyone for using their software. This is what has given way to CorelDraw reason to enter the Mac market all over again, to win back some customers, problem is that CorelDraw also uses the Subscription method. The best alternative is Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer and Affinity Publisher. For most tasks Affinity can handle it all, they are currently in the process to "even" the gap and catch-up to Adobe products. When using Affinity software, keep in mind that there is a small learning curb switching from Adobe, but nothing to heavy that can stop you. Once Adobe feels the heat, I'm sure they will return to innovating once again.

As a future 3d modeling freelancer... Using Maya will suck a lot of money I'll be making out of me. It's about $1200 a year. It's far less than the amount of stuff you use from the creative cloud, but it is far FAR more expensive. The main problem is, it's a way more extreme case of the same problem. The code is horrible, the customer service is horrible, it crashes constantly on systems that were built for it, etc. And yet, I learned it in college and having a hard time moving over to Blender. I hope to work for an indie company where they don't care about the fact that I want to save money by using Blender because I'm not a company owner who has money to throw around. I hope I never have to subscribe to Maya unless the company is paying for it for me, because unlike PS, Maya is expensive, along with Substance Painter which is $700 a year and DOES NOT have competition. If I'm paying almost $2k a year in just subscriptions fees because the buggy ass programs are the industry standard and have such a hold on companies that they can just get away with it, it's not great. Not that it's affecting you yourself, but as an individual who will be in an industry where the $1200/yr software is "so much better" in the eyes of companies it really doesn't feel good. Also note, hobbyists usually have to open a side gig to justify using these softwares, especially Maya. They have to open and run a whole ass business to justify the payment for Maya.
