In the UK if you pass the driving test in an automatic. Your licence is restricted to automatic. You have to pass another test to drive manual's. So driving schools normally teach in manual cars. So that people can drive both from the start.

I only drive manual cars and I can't imagine driving automatics. I have a manual jeep and I make a lot of trips and Driving on dirt and controlling the car is an incredible feeling. I don't like the car controlling me. Manuals are the best for driving

This is just my opinion but in south Africa auto are usually popular in SUVs and beginner drivers who want to learn steering and acceleration but the manual is much more popular. Im still surprised to this day when my cuz told me the US is more in auto. And i feel like auto has less control in power but times have changed since we have dsg gearboxes and peddle shifts, but its still better than auto for me that is😅

The option is there, but you’ll have to search for it.

If you have a breakdown with an automatic car in the African bush you are likely to be really stranded, but with a manual car, you should be able to get it fixed after spending not more than one night sleeping in the car.

Things change. Last year more than half of new cars sold in France and Belgium (and probably other countries) were automatic gear, not taking into consideration electric vehicles. I for one bought my first automatic car in 2023, a French Citroën model, and I don"t want to drive a manual anymore.

Im 28 and drive a manual. Here in the states, its mostly young car enthusiasts like myself who prefer manuals. It connects you more to the car. And its just more fun. Everytime I get in an automatic, im just bored. I prefer to row my own gears. Honestly it makes you a more alert and better driver too because its very engaging. Lol i even see little old grandmas driving them. Definitely not hard when you get used to it. Plus, nobody can drive your car and its also less likely to be stolen when you pull up to gas stations etc 🤷🏾♂️

Manual shift does allow you more control over a car 100%. To pass driver education which in my state is required to be able to get your drivers license before you turn 18, and if you don't take it most insurance companies won't take you (no liability insurance to cover other people medical & property accident costs = suspended license) if they do it costs more then the car is worth a year to have. I am glad i learned its very intuitive and especially in bad conditions, snow, mud you need the extra control manual shift gives you. Also it saves lots of gas if you drive it right.,

I make a living diagnosing car issues. I’m very happy with automatic transmissions, but I’ll stick to manual myself. Don’t want to bring my work to home.😅

No Super car has a manual transmission now. They have very advanced automatic transmission with manual (no clutch) shifting ability. People could no properly use a clutch in these large HP engines without breaking it and saying it was a manufacturing defect. Electric cars get 100% torque at 0RPM making them similar, too much power at start for human to control without damaging the motor and or transmission. With as little gas is left electric cars need to be used and the tech is changing so its safer, cheaper and better. Cell Phones were thought of in the 80s the way electric cars are today.... We will need them sooner rather then later as gas runs dry, there is a finite amount of oil in the ground and people have been using a lot the last few decades.

A normal human can learn to drive manual in half an hour and hit the road.. That's how simple it is.

This is probably an old video, things are changing rapidly now, at least in some parts of Europe. In Sweden, today, more than 90% of new cars are automatic, and I would guess it's similar in at least most north/western european countries. But there is one reason for the manual transmission that he didn't bring up. Back in the days, automatic transmissions were quite crappy, so back then, automatic was not something you really wanted, even if it had been cheap. I remember driving a few automatic cars in my youth, in the nineties, and that was not a very pleasent thing. They didn't make me want an automatic. And I think that stuck. We remember those crappy transmissions, and it took some time to overcome those bad memories. But as time went on, and the automatic transmissions got better, we started to appreciate them. For me, my last car (sold it a year ago, didn't need it anymore, live downtown) was a hybrid, so an automatic, and I really can't see myself going back to manual. :)

Im in the UK and love automatic (but can drive manual). I hate the attitude than manual is so much better. Who cares, im going to the shops and work, im not a race car driver haha!

Automatic will become the standard because of electric cars. Automatic is rising in the Netherlands, but manual is still the standard by far even though variomatic is a Dutch invention. In the Netherlands there is a different driving license for automatic only. It also has an, in the EU unique extra tax that makes cars around 30% more expensive. However many tax benefits make electric cars cheap relative to regular ones, Tesla's are very common. But electric cars drive differently and when they're involved in accidents, the damage is more severe. A big advantage from learning to drive manual is that you develop a feeling of how the engine is performing. Personally I hope one is obliged to learn driving manual, basic engine maintenance, changing a tire and the obvious material when obtaining a driving license until the self driving cars are the standard.
