While a newly married bride, a friend of mine was the houseguest of her husband's great-aunts. The sisters lived in an ancient rambling "cottage" overlooking the Atlantic coast. It was the sort of house that had two library rooms -- one reserved for "the family's books", meaning books whose authors were family members. As she was unpacking in an upstairs bedroom in the "original part" of the house, she became aware of a gentleman in early 19th century clothing standing at the foot of the bed. He bowed politely, then vanished before she could even squeak. When she recounted her experience to the aunts, they asked, "What color was his clothing." "Green," said my friend. "Oh, that's his good suit. He wanted to welcome you, dear," murmured one aunt. The other chimed in, "Yes, his ordinary suit is brown." * For years, we've wondered if ghosts have closets...

I've seen a ghost of my great-grandmother, that I don't even remember in real life because the last time I've seen her was when I was 7 months old and we also don't have any of her pictures. But when I saw her ghost I knew it was her, she was wearing long black skirt, black cardigan and crocheted shawl, and when I asked my mum what did she usually wear she said exactly the same thing, it was so creepy. Then I've seen a picture of her at my grandma's house and this ghost looked exactly like her.

When I was about 4 years old, much too young to have any kinds of preconceptions that might influence what I saw a ghost wearing, my uncle got married, and the marriage took place on the grounds of an old plantation house. The house itself was made available for the bride to be dressed, with any last minute changes thus facilitated. I was very hyperactive child, and contributing quite a bit of disturbance to the situation in the dressing room. finally, my mother grabbed me and shooed me out of the dressing room. In the hall I saw a black woman with a long skirt, and she had a kerchief tied around her head. These were garments typical of slaves in that era, but this was something I knew nothing about, so, not the power of suggestion or me imposing those garments in my mind. Anyway, she put her finger to her lips to shush me, then walked into a room. I followed her in, thinking I'd found someone to talk to, the room was empty. There was no furniture in the room, and no lady with a kerchief. I went to the window and looked out, but the room was on the 2nd floor.

Not sure if I've ever seen a ghost. Certainly felt and heard them though. Heavy footsteps going up the stairs of my childhood home, but never reaching the top, only to start again from the bottom. It was a semi-detached house with the stairs next to the alleyway, so not the sound from next door. Heard and felt something at my cousin's house, and found out later a girl my age had died at the bottom of the spiral stairs, where I had felt it the most. I did once see a man on a road, that then vanished. Tall fences on either side of the road, so nowhere for him to have gone. But it was only a quick glimpse as I was driving. That road is now walking only, and it always feels a bit eerie.

I tend to believe these stories. There are just too many of them from quite sensible people.

I never really thought about this question until I saw this video. The various theories presented re all plausible explanations for why ghosts appear in clothes, and are almost so obvious that few people would actually give it much thought. The one 'stereotype' about ghosts that always had me stumped is why they're often depicted saying, "Boo!" as if it's supposed to be scary or intimidating. Can anyone shed some light on this trope . . . ? 221st like.

I saw a ghost once early in the morning about 3 or 4am at work. She had blond hair and a light green sweater on.

Nice video and details, nice delivery, nice enthusiasm, have a sub! But yes, there are a few accounts of people having witnessed balls of light transforming into a clothed human form, so it seems that we are, at least in part (and perhaps while still alive in some ways?? perhaps this is how we become??), how we see ourselves! The clothing argument is thus such a non-disproof lol Imagine if all ghosts had to be naked... LOL I myself have heard one, along with someone else at the same time (so it wasn't just imagination or mis-hearing), on a USAF aircraft, which ended up having a story behind it to support it, to the point that I think I know the name of the exact deceased person whose ghost that was

Feeling dumb now, remembering that coffins haven't been used forever. Edit: so the shroud would have been like walking around in your coffin.

i always figured clothes on ghosts make sense for decency reasons, but wat about hair and makeup, they surely have to be ghost as well, maybe that's where those darn hairpins end up when i don't look at them... also on a different subject, in tv shows where the creature dust off into nothing (mainly vampires on Buffy's) where does the objects ends and the vampire begin because no clothe is left after dusting, jewelry included except that one instance where giles picks up a ring left behind and if the vampire has a cup in their hand, is it considered enough of an accessory to dust off with them? generally that tends to be sorted with ghosts where they have a fixed set of things with them (a bit like a doll has a certain amount of accessories) a psychic youtuber said she was told by some of those ghosts that basically they choose to appear as human at all, everything about them is a projection the most noteworthy example is the alledged spirit of Marylin Monroe/Norma Jean who appears with blond hair and some article of clothing that is recognizable on certain public place associated with her but is claimed to have sometimes her natural brown hair and casual dress at home in rooms she prefered, one encounter claimed she had long straight brown hair pulled back (a style she never wore in her life) so i assume she could sometimes choose to wear modern clothes to convey the proper feeling to whoever she wants to connect with (it was at a bar and the person said she fet really glamorous but couldn't recognise her) i kinda want for my afterlife to be able to hang around for a bit with cool and interesting people and dress up in styles from after my passing

I like to imagine that ghosts in the future will all look really stylish because of how fashion has evolved. Old tried-and-true victorian ghosts finally fizzle out, and in come the hipster ghosts with puffer jackets and hoodies

The only time I saw a ghost, he was wearing red and blue plaid boxer shorts. Now I wonder why he wasn’t wearing a shirt or pants. Maybe he was hoping to get lucky.

Or...the woman's hubby came home early, so the guy died in his skivvies! Image having to wear ugly "cheeky cheater boxers" for all eternity!
