what doesnt make sense is why toriyama made it apparent to give Trunks and Gohan the plot armor, instead of their respective fathers. He goes out of his way to show the training/forshadowing for goku and vegeta's transformations. But the most recent trunks and gohan ones seem like ass pulls. So maybe it is plot armor, but I like to think tori was telling us they had more potential than the full blooded saiyans.

Future Gohan lacked the training his counterpart did as his father died of heart virus! During the battle against Future 17 & 18, Future Gohan fled the battlefield with the aid of Bulma & infant Future Trunks, in order to find the Dragon Balls to hopefully get rid of the Androids (presumably by wishing them off world as while Shenron cannot kill anyone himself if they are stronger than Kami, he can presumably transport them off planet to hopefully a barren world or even into the vaccum of space)! Unfortunately, Future Pilaf made a wish to be younger, turning himself Future Mai & Future Shu into infants (hence why Future Mai is younger)! Unfortunately, this was the final wish made using the Earth DBs as Piccolo died soon afterwards! With Piccolo and the rest of the Z Fighters killed (save for Future Yajirobe in the DBS anime), Future Gohan was left as the sole survivor without his dad, Piccolo, or even Vegeta to guide him in becoming stronger! Without mentors, Future Gohan was forced to take on the role of Earth's sole protector until Future Trunks was old enough for him to train! Unfortunately, Future Gohan, like many Saiyans before him, assumed SSJ was the pinnacle of Saiyan strength, never even contemplating the possibility there was a way to ascend beyond it as he lacked the experience & Saiyan instincts that Goku & Vegeta have! If given similar opportunities as main timeline Gohan, I have no doubt Future Gohan would be able to be as strong as if not more so than his counterpart as due to the hellish timeline he lives in, I'd imagine he'd be more vigilante in his training thus would be far less likely to backslide in times of peace like his counterpart does! Not to mention, he'd probably push himself to get even stronger to maintain peace! Here's hoping in the new future timeline Future Trunks & Future Mai fled to after the destruction of their Future's multiverse, that they were able to convince Future Beerus to have Future Whis resurrect the Future Gohan of the new future timeline (Android 17 & 18 aren't demons so Future Whis could easily resurrect Future Gohan provided it was an order from Future Beerus)!

Well and it's a fact that the only training experience that future Gohan had was the one Piccolo gave him which was just pure sparring so he didn't actually know how to train by himself, and since he no longer had anyone to spar with he couldn't actually train. And even if he knew that Goku and Vegeta could train by themselves he never actually knew or saw how they did it. And when Trunks grew up enough that they could train, he still didn't gain much from it but was more like how Piccolo was with young Gohan as in being more a mentor to Trunks instead of training partners only without the wisdom and experience of Piccolo.

I have to disagree that both of those characters were the very best masters. Sure they were good trainers but neither future Trunks nor current Gohan would have reached this level if not for the training that they had with their respective fathers. And we have proof which is future Gohan not being able to even reach the big toe of SSJ2 power and future Trunks getting killed in Cell's timeline by Cell. Piccolo only taught Gohan one aspect of training which was sparring since it was a necessity for Gohan to get real fighting experience because of the saiyans arriving but he didn't actually learn how to train by himself which shows in future Gohans training regiment of only sparring with Trunks following Piccolos example of how he trained Gohan.

In the case of Future Trunks in DBZ, he had access to SSJ cause he achieved it in his own timeline (in the manga it was before Future Gohan's death as he utilizes the form against Future Gohan in his training & he presumably had an easy time achieving it early much like his main timeline counterpart did, though in The History of Trunks special/TV movie it was after Future Gohan's death as it was changed so struggles to achieve it to make the reveal of his transformation more dramatic)! However, Future Vegeta achieved his SSJ form before the conflict with the Androids! Future Trunks just had SSJ cause he was a time traveling hybrid Saiyan who achieved his SSJ form in his own time! Yes, he technically was the second SSJ & first hybrid Super Saiyan to physically appear in the main timeline, but Vegeta was the second Saiyan to awaken the form within the main timeline as Future Trunks was already a SSJ before using the Time Machine! Yes, Future Trunks has a lot of potential, but he was mostly inexperienced with transformation due losing his mentor in Future Gohan, which is why he failed to recognize the flaws of SSJ 3rd Grade/SSJ 1.5, mistakenly believing he had surpassed Vegeta until Perfect Cell made him aware of the muscular form's drawback of hindering the user's speed which is why Vegeta only used SSJ 2nd Grade as it bulked up his muscles while not effecting his speed, though the form lacked the energy efficiency & clear mind of SSJ 4th Grade/Mastered SSJ which Goku developed after recognizing the drawbacks of both ascended forms! Future Trunks had the benefit of having achieved his transformation in a different, less peaceful timeline and making him seek to eliminate threats quickly to avoid the development of another Future like his own, hence why he eliminated Frieza, King Cold, Future 17, Future 18, Future Cell, & Future Dabura as soon as long as he had the power to do so! Future Trunks also has to fight in a world where he's the only surviving Z Fighter, with limited support from the likes of Future Mai (in the anime, he also has the Earth's Resistance & Future Yajirobe until they are killed off by Infinite Zamasu) who lacks the martial arts skill and relies on military weaponry to make up for it! Still, he also benefits from spending time around the Z Fighters of the main timeline who help him grow via example (Gohan showed him the untapped potential that Future Gohan never achieved in his lifetime & what hybrids like himself were capable of, Vegeta & Goku helped him realize there was a power beyond SSJ, & his own battle with Perfect Cell helped him realize the folly of overconfidence & his own inexperience, making him determined to eliminate Future Cell to ensure he couldn't repeat the same cycle that occurred in Cell's timeline)!

Well future Gohan wasn't any better in transformations as he lost his own potential mentor being Goku before he even got a chance to train with him, limiting his mindset. It also didn't help that his only experience with training was the one he had with Piccolo which was just pure sparring so he couldn't even train after all the Z fighters died and he didn't know how to train by himself, and since he didn't have his father and Vegeta's inquisitive mind towards getting stronger and relying only on his past experiences didn't allow him to get stronger and inevitably lead to his death.

Only if we're talking about before Buu saga Gohan, and we don't know how hard future Trunks actually worked after his arc so saying he deserved the Rage power up which was anime only btw doesn't really add up, now of course I can assume he didn't get sloppy in his training since he knew the importance of getting stronger but should that training really be enough to get a power that is on par with Goku and Vegeta in SSB when at the start of the arc he couldn't even hold a candle against SSJ3. Saiyans thrive off of violence and constant fighting. All 4 (Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Future Trunks) were all exposed to dangers at a young age. And as survival of the fittest goes...these Saiyans sure are fit to survive. This is evident in Future Trunks & Cuurent Day Trunks. Sure, CD Trunks had turned SS as a child, but that isn't close to fighting til your next meal kind of life the Z Fighters had to face. Gohan was exposed to life threatening dangers as a toddler and his Saiyan instincts brought him to SS2 because he had so much at stake during the Cell Tournament. He knows what it's like losing a friend at a young age on Namek and he didn't want to experience that again. Which is why he trained so hard....but as life goes and the use of the dragon balls is a like a shopping errand at the super market...that feeling of loss and worry of the planet slips away. Which is why he allowed himself to succumb to his mother's wishes and became a studious fellow (which is totally fine), but he stepped away from his Saiyan genetics and let his humanly nature take over. Hopefully...he continues to pursue his path to surpassing the pureblooded saiyans and becomethe guy we all want him to be.

Saiyans powers are tied to their emotions which the saiyan race has become mostly detached from. Even though Goku was raised on earth by humans and has developed human emotions, his saiyan instinct didn't let him really tap into his powers until Freiza killed Krillin on Namek, allowing him to turn SSJ out of fury. Emotions come easy to half breeds which allows them to tap into their potential much easier. Gohan first experienced this when Radiz kidnapped him when he was just a child. Gohan got angry, broke out of his pod and severely damaged Radiz. Also tied to the reason he was able to reach SSJ2 much easier than Goku and Vegeta.

Gohans potential was only an outlier that happened just because of the writing needing him to have it. Hence Goten and Trunks not reaching the level that Gohan has even though they in theory should have more potential than him going by your logic. it looks like hybrid saiyans cant access the power of gods because they resort to primitive and beastly forms while goku and vegeta can achieve forms that rival the gods, so thats why the hybrid saiyans will always be behind goku and vegeta

If Gohan and Trucks trained even half as much their fathers did, they'd be far above them. Goku and Vegeta have literally spent their entire lives training. In the OG Dragonball, Goku spent his entire childhood finding new masters to train with, fighting every fighter he came across and trying to be stronger. We can assume Vegeta spent most of his childhood training as well considering he was actually raised with other Saiyans during time when they were actively conquering planets/civilizations. Meanwhile Gohan and Trucks have generally only been serious about training when there was a serious threat present... After it's over they just go back to living a normal life until the need to train arises. I think the mixed blood has the effect of giving them stronger potential, but the downside is they don't have the Saiyan drive to become the strongest they can be. For Saiyans, fighting is like a drug. Goku literally gets giddy/excited the second he finds someone who may be able to challenge him

Let's not forget, present trunks in Goten we're able to achieve super Saiyan 3 when they fused and to got tanks. Which technically makes them surpass Goten and Future trunks.

The answer is "rage,"I guess. Everyone in ragon Ball grows in power when their upset because everyone is holding back for the sake of a good fight. For some reason, these two seem to surpass the craziest limits despite only having half of the Saiyan warrior genes. It's almost like the less Saiyan you are, the stronger you can be, but if you completely lack Saiyan cells, you're cooked.
