Good review thanks. I’ve been riding for about 12 years, 7 of those after a massive heart attack in 2014. Now it’s an integral part of my health and fitness regime. In the winter I ride indoors on a trainer, in the warmer months I ride on the road or the local MTB trails. I’ve made many friends riding, and take part in a lot of local organised rides.

In my younger days, I used to do a lot of running with various clubs. One day I stumbled on a group of mostly guys in a club at the Adventist Hospital in Hong Kong - it promoted running as part of an active recovery programme following heart attacks or surgery. They were older, chubbier and didn't look dangerous, but they killed me on the hills. I put it down to determination. I'll never underestimate a recovering heart patient again. These days I'm a rider, which is easier on the knees than pounding the pavement. Hopefully, it'll keep me out of the ICU, if not the ER (collar bone, road rash and other crash damage). Live long and keep pedalling

Wow Matt - that intro was spot-on; some seriously well-executed photography and editing in there. Really appreciate your real-world review style also. I do have to agree about the feel of Garmin Edge charging ports - first noticed it on the Edge 1000 which felt about as water-tight as a sponge.

I’ve been doing ROAD cycling for the past 3 years here in Australia. I never experience having a bike computer and to be honest I only use a smart phone and garmin watch for my cadence, speed, maps and etc. And currently, I am planning to have a bike computer, thats why I’ve been searching which suits my small budget. Luckily that you are planning to have a comparison between the New Wahoo Element Bolt vs this Garmin Edge 530 because this are my preferred options. Well, I might be lucky to receive this device. Hehe anyway thank you for your awesome videos mate.

Yeah! These two are excellent options in this > $300ish range. I am excited to make that Bolt v2 vs 530 video here soon. I just need more time in the day with kids, work and everything. 😂 I think if you don't need too much in the way of navigation, mt biking metrics, or some of the other connect iq apps than the wahoo with better buttons and ui might be the way to go. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I think that's what my conclusions will most likely be in the video. But thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it.

Hey Matt, nice video, I lost my Garmin 530 last year and had to buy a second hand 820 but I’m expecting to be able to afford a 530 again, Despite I’m not an aggressive rider I enjoyed too much seeing the grit, flow and jumps at the end of each ride. Shame to hear you lost your computer. But second hand gear can be great. I spotted an ad for a Polar M460 for about US$40. I already had a Polar HR sensor, so I snapped it up. I've been using my phone for a few years and the M460 is my first proper bike comp. For something that's been on the market for at least 5 years, it still does a pretty good job. No navigation, but I know where I am going. It displays and captures all the data I need, and it syncs to Strava. Hopefully it will last a while. Cheers

Another great review and can't wait until you do the 1030 Plus since it is what I have already. I think this 530 would be a great addition to my 1030 Plus, especially since I would most likely just let Roger have it and use it. He's still on an old Cateye system. lol. Roger definitely prefers bike trails as he his not comfortable with road riding and/or traffic at all. What I ride depends on the time of day, weather, workout, etc as to what I'll ride. Matt, I've been mountain biker for a long time, couple of years and I did not like to ride on roads at all. Even the shortest sections that got me to trails was like a sentence for me. But this year I got myself a road cycling bug. I absolutely love the energy transfer. Nothing gets lost in suspension or in a tyre width/thread. Feels like pure power. And also as I am trying to get more into the triathlon it makes more sense to ride road.

Thanks for the video. I’m kind of new into road cycling (currently based in Thailand), but have been a huge fan of the sport pretty much since I was a kid, especially the grand tours. I’m currently looking my first bike computer with GPS navigation instead of using my smartphone (Komoot app) or being depended on the guys I’m riding with. I’m kind of undecided between the Edge 530, Edge 830 and Element Roam, since the Bolt V2 is not yet available in Thailand. The color screen is definitely a must, and as of now navigation is the most important feature for me. Training/fitness stats might become important in the future. From watching several reviews, the map details on a Garmin device seem to be better than Wahoo, but Wahoo has an “edge” on the user interface. I guess the touchscreen on Edge 830 could become annoying with sweaty hands or rough terrains as we tend to include gravels on our rides. I’m leaning a little bit towards Edge 530 with the Bolt V2 in a close competition. I guess it comes down better navigation or better user interface. Your reviews are definitely helpful, and it would be great in the future if a review could include the actual feed/video of the navigation. I have only found 1-2 videos showing the actual use of navigation. Anyway thanks for the review.

Hiking is only now and again and the device would only be for navigation and its maps so i know what hill or mountain i'm on and how to get off safely if the weather\visibility turns bad. +1 on recommending the Garmin. It is a robust product that covers tons of bases. I would love to listen to you talk about ingratiation between a watch, headunit, smartphone ecosystem for fitness tracking. You've said the recommended workouts aren't all that good, but how tight a read can a 360* garmin ecosytem get on your vitals/fitness? I might also ask how the less expensive Garmin watches do tracking your fitness over time compared to the fancier, more optioned out watches, like the Enduro watch I can't wait to hear more about!! My buddy did a foot-ed Everesting event where he hiked up the mountain and rode the lift down. That's the kind of mountain biker I'd like to be! (slight hyperbole). It was awesome to see a little MTB action in the montages. Have you heard of the Rule of 3 Races? I like hte idea of those. XOXO
@mlegrand
@mlegrand 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm a horrible mountain biker but it's been fun after buying Lance's old bike. I don't think the Garmin workouts are all that bad, it's just that there are probably better options out there. At the end of the day, I think it's just important to be doing workouts and the type of workout is less important. I don't think there is much difference in the calculation of fitness (or VO2Max metrics) between the high-end and low-end Garmins but the higher-end watches have sleep tracking which I really enjoy. Maybe you borrow this Enduro for a few days while you're out here? I'm actually over due for my 100 day review of that watch. I need to get that recorded and out the door in the next few weeks. And the giveaway. 😢

Hi Matt. I am tempted to move from Wahoo and back to garmin just for the Trailforks features as I mountain bike more than I road bike and Wahoo's navigation isn't grear for MTB Trails in my experience.

You know, it’s tempting. Maybe see what Garmin does next with this series? 🤷🏻‍♂️ I will say that a recent firmware update broke Trailforks but I’m sure they will get that situated here soon.

Hi! I mostley ride mtb trails around where i live, but they tend to be boring after i while. I have friends who knows new trails close by, but since I have three kids, its hard to sync rides with them. This is reason why I need a garmin edge 530, to be able to expand my trail roots. Best regards, Björn

Awesome Björn, the 530 would be a great option. BTW, I also have three kids. It's hard to fit these rides in but I'm thankful for the breaks. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

That 360 overhead view made it look like you stole some footage from The Sims. Pretty amazing, actually. Dude... hang time on your mountain bike is crazy important!! I can't believe you don't use that stat. lol My riding style? Umm... yes. :-) Seriously, though, I'm at a juncture where all my riding is so I can do triathlons or to see the amazing countryside here in northeast NC. I will admit, though, that I've been shopping for a pretty decent hardtail. Been working pretty hard to get in a place where I can buy a house, so a mountain bike may have to wait a bit longer. Ultimately, as long as I'm on two wheels, I'm pretty happy, whether I have to provide the power, or not.

Yeah, house over mountain bike 👌 At some point I’d love to make it over to NC to go for a ride with you. That’d be amazing! Thanks for everything. 👍

@@mlegrand I'd highly recommend a trip. With you doing all you training out there in the PNW, you'd be able to ride forever on our pancake flat roadways! Of course, you could hit up the Blue Ridge mountains in western NC. They're not as high as what you have out west, but they're (geologically) much, much older and equally beautiful!

Yeah, those TT bikes are really very different if you're used to road. But it's a good tool for the typical triathlon race 👌 Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
