Why do our EBAY Listings Seem to Disappear?

eBay policy clearly states that they can will and do delete old stale listings. If your item has been listed for a year with no activity it is subject to removal. This is why end and sell similar is important

I heard someone from eBay say after 18 mths a listing is considered stale. It makes sense to remove if the seller is not even trying; changing the price, putting it on sale, ect. Any Activity.

I didn't know this. I just finished an inventory I've been working on since thanksgiving. I found unlisted inventory easily adding up to 10K. I pay attention to my ended tab and these items were never on there. It is so frustrating because I do markdowns and end and sell similar. Probably going to do quarterly inventories to see what can remedy this.

I agree with this 100%. I run a store with my sister and the whole month of December we didn’t list anything. The only thing we did was end all old listings and sell similar. We had a great month just doing that.

eBay Dropped Listings: Had one of my oldest listings sell today. It stayed active with almost no activity for several years, but I've had items listed in the last few months randomly disappear. It's that randomness that has always made it a puzzle. My oldest eBay account has been around over 20 years now and can say lost listing is a common problem and much of it has to do (in my opinion) with the way eBay functions (or fails to function). But on the other hand, they sometimes reactivate sold listings and sell them a second time, to make up for lost listings! 😉

What's even worse. Once you make a new listing and that item sells. The original listing shows back up, and you will sell it again.

That’s the million dollar question! It’s super annoying every year. Don’t know if you guys remember a few years back there used to be a thing under active listings that said update your listing within a certain time. If you didn’t those would eventually end without them telling you. Makes me think they still do that with stale inventory but don’t tell us anymore. It would be a lot nicer if they just had an automatic email send out saying “x was delisted due to lack of activity/interest”.

I was looking for your magazines and it looks like you have some under Books and some under Comics. Have you considered starting a Magazines category, or renaming one of the others to something like "Books and Magazines"? Just a thought. Enjoying the videos as always!

I, too, have had many listings disappear over the years. And not just older ones. I always assumed it was some combination of computer and human (me) error. I just did a year end inventory and discovered about 3% of the items on my shelves that I assumed were 100% listed were not. I have 2004 total listings and I found 64 items that were not listed. Of those 64 I would honestly say the cause being user error was the cause of no more than 10. I remember er listing most and had no reason to cancel the listing during the year.

Lonnie, On shelf 6-c , extreme right, it looked like you had some slabbed comics? I went through your comic listings and did not see any listed, if that's what they are are you going to be listing them soon? (As I watched again I think they could also be CD's Or DVD's) After watching a third time they are most likely CD's or DVD's as you put the box you were carrying behind them. Sorry to bother you.

Do you ever find that your listing goal ever influences your actual listings one by one? For example, especially if it’s a slow listing day and you know the goal of $500 is out there, and you’re bouncing between like $20 or $30 for an item…perhaps your listing goal total influences to list at $30 instead of perhaps a more reasonable $20? If it has…then of what real use is a listing (overall total) goal? Thx

When we have something that might sell on marketplace we 0 out the inventory and when they pick up the item then we delete it on ebay... our inventory is bin by bin, or bulk locations... we do our inventory ongoing year long... usually if item isn't listed from the bin, it's either a sale was canceled and we didn't relist the item... the only thing I noticed on ebay is 0 views, and our item was listed for many months! I printed out my inventory one time and I kept track when I couldn't find something if it had been on my inventory and 98% of the time it had been and it just disappeared. EBay has no answer for me.

I've been scrolling through my items after just opening the app. 15 items down the site reset on me and I would say a good 15 to 18 items popped up. I've had items sold packed and shipped then it sells again. Not often that this happens, but it has happened. I'm a one-off seller and a little bit of everything. I only have 200 items roughly in my store so not much to get lost. Have a good shelving system in place and locations set up. Wish I knew why this happens.

I don’t think I’ve had any listings disappear on eBay but I know several times on Etsy I had a whole bunch disappear and contacted them and they wanted proof that they disappeared and I’m thinking they disappeared from my listing so how can I prove I listed them ? So of course I couldn’t prove it but I know for a fact I had at least five or six out of a very small inventory disappear many years ago but I don’t think it’s happened since and if it has it’s only been an occasional item. I’m gonna start paying more attention to my inventory though and check it more often !

Mine drop off as well, unsure why...during lockdown I found over 60 listings that had fallen off. Was handy at the time as couldn't source but at same time it is a pain in the arse. Reason why I don't delete my photos as well as it is tiresome to have to retake same photos. As for Ebay items now appearing on facebook Marketplace, it can't be a bad thing as long as we do not get the 'is this item still available' messages.

Ended listings is a known Ebay issue. That is why you have to do at least yearly inventory. Take care;

I started selling on eBay in 1999. I stopped completely in 2016. I typically had 1500-2000 items listed. I had a spreadsheet that I tracked where things were stored when listed etc. Ever single quarter there were at least 50 items that disappeared. This started long before eBay removed things and before other platforms were really available. Amazon has the same issues with inventory simply no longer being listed.

I keep around 300 listings going, and whenever I do an inventory there is usually 3 - 5 "poof no longer there." It has always been that way.

I believe this is when someone is scrolling thru the different listings, they'll select the heart (in the photo) to "watch" the item, without opening the listing.

Also you can search your email to see when you listed it, an email notification is went if you have your notifications on

I also use those e-mails to check when an item sold, but isn’t in the bin it should be, to see if it sold previously and the listing reactivated on eBay. This has happened to me a few times and saves me the hassle of looking in alternate bins to see if it was misplaced. Checking for a sold e-mail can save time. 😉

I think when they do updates it just screws stuff up because I've had someone try to buy an item from me and the quantity is 0 . I can't even list an item with 0 quantity so that was deleted on their end. It was an item I only ever had 1 of.

I’ve seen this with deleted listing photos. Buyers ask for more photos and when I check there is only a single stock image (which I didn’t load) or in some cases no photo at all. I can’t make a listing go active with 0 photos, so e-bay had to have deleted them at some point, the same way they delete listings.

I do a stocktake minimum once a quarter. Every single time there are missing listings. They are not cancellations and not old / stale and not Vero. Ebay just randomly deletes items (and duplicates them too!!). I think the commenters saying maybe something goes wrong when the listings renew are probably on to something because there is definitely something amiss in the state of ebay!

The ads on FB marketplace are so annoying and deceiving! Makes for a frustrating experience, when you just want to buy a gently used bookcase local!😂 It’s things like that that remind me that we are not social media companies customers, our attention is the product they sell to advertisers.

So it’s been a bit since you’ve done a “guy” transaction. I was curious if your relationship is such that you encounter him outside of work. If not what do you do to stay on contact with such relationships? Do you do anything like holiday cards/ newsletter for friends and family? Seemingly a gentle reminder can help keep open business relationships. As an outsider I find you guy buys fascinating. He seems to have a great eye for stuff and reasonable expectations when dealing with you.

I have worked for a ebay seller for 4 yrs. They sell new and used auto parts. we have sold used parts that have been listed for 15 to 20 yrs and they never disappeared and was never updated or revised. Even the pictures were low quality for the age.

Im blaming ebay for mine. I don't cross list, o don't sell a lot of multi quantity, no Veros. Had a whole shelf of things listed over a few days not show up that had been in my store prior, another time it was a bunch of older listings. So that's my experience.

Ebay had asked me for my password while in the process of creating or editing a listing, three separate times today. Sent me codes via text twice in the past 20 minutes, to verify it's me adding listings at a rate not seen before I guess. I've really been banging them out the past several days. Maybe that's why. And when I switch to the other account, I have to prove I'm a human by clicking on the sweet food pictures.

I read recently that they were updating item specifics on clothing sometime in January. By the end of the month, you may want to check your inventory. You have listed more clothing, so hopefully, that will have already fallen into the new system. I just changed my username, and I know you know I am a long viewer. It is my opinion that the reason things fall out of the listings is when Ebay relists automatically after 30 days ! I started delisting and selling similar over a year ago every listing every month and I haven't found any missing items since ! Who knows ????
