I went backwards to 2 from 3. I absolutely hated it. 3 was hard in way that still allowed it to be accessible. Specific things were hard for the sake of rewarding you for perseverance. 2 was hard for the sake of being obtuse. It was overly difficult for the fuck of it. Honestly I found it inaccessible. The timing was whack, the hit boxes were whack, the graphics were super whack, it just wasn’t as good as 3. 3 is still my favorite.

@malamanalopa2786 i said the same thing until i got a little further into dark souls 2 and then realized why everyone says it's an ass game, all the bosses are the easiest I've ever fought, but the bosses aren't the problem, it's the MASSIVE areas and the fact that durability is WAY less than in any other dark souls and it gets reset by the bonfire, meaning in tougher areas you HAVE to kill the enemies so much that they stop spawning(12 or so times) in order to progress.

The main thing that separates DS2 from the other Souls games is the pace you're intended to keep. Dark Souls 2 is meant to be taken s l o w l y. Once you slow down, and give in to the experience, it's one of the most rewarding games ever made. For the most part, the game's "zones" are very open, I think that's intentional to the play style in giving you time to plan and plot your approach The droning music, the pace of the NPCs speech , and even the representation in Vendricks trudging march, the game is saying a lot without saying anything. "Hopeful apathy" might be close to the feeling The depth of this game is incredible. (I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but hopefully someone that's on the fence about DS2 might get inspired to give it another shot)

Idk mate, playing through it again the zones seem pretty short once I'm only going through them to get to the bosses (I'm playing a caveman, so only clubs and club-likes and my naked bum and kutzpah). I partly blame it on the fact that I promised myself that I will be streaming my favorite game after every milestone, so...yeah.
@Humblemumble7
@Humblemumble7 Жыл бұрын
@@chukyuniqul Yeah, I can pretty much agree with that, the zones are indeed short... Although I was mainly talking about the zones being very open, as in the opposite of cramped and claustrophobic. And you have the room and space to plot out your attacks, because for the most part, you can see it coming.. Like the spiders on the ceilings of Tseldora, or the No Man's Warf, you get these vast open areas in DS2 like no other in the series. I'm aware I'm not doing a very good job of explaining my case Lol

Honestly, DS2 is an absolute banger, and the beginning is way less bad than it sounds. You're supposed to just walk past the beginning enemies, which normally ignore you anyway. Plus the hit you're supposed to reach is like 10 meters away. Also, the half health thing can be annoying when you start the game, but you get your full health and your equipment once you reach the hut. For me, the health was really only ever an issue for the forest of giants, since once I get to Heide's Tower, I just pick up the ring that halves the effect and then just play with 3/4 of my health through the entirety of the game, without being bothered by it.

@lucas_lipp 2 жыл бұрын
@@fozzythasalesman6125 Every time you die, you lose a bit of your max health. Luckily, it does stop declining at half your max health, but that still makes it incredibly easy to die way too quickly. So, you can use a human effigy to restore your max health to full, kind of like an ember in DS3, but you can always see how much you've lost/ to gain when using an effigy. Naturally, half health isn't great, nor is having to rely on limited consumables to remedy it, which is why I'm very fond of a ring you can find at the beginning of the game, which limits the health reduction to 3/4 of your max health, which isn't too bad. So I just always have the ring equipped and completely ignore the health reduction and human effigies.

@fozzythasalesman6125 2 жыл бұрын
@@lucas_lipp yo, wtttf? That's a crazy mechanic... so are you saying that using the Effigy fully resets you to max health, so each death after that only lowers your max health incrementally again? @lucas_lipp
@lucas_lipp 2 жыл бұрын
@@fozzythasalesman6125 Every death is a loss of like 5%, I think. So when you use an effigy, your health resets and it takes like 10 deaths to be back at half health. Effigies are fairly common, I think I had like 40+ lying around in my inventory when I beat the game, and I didn't even do the dlc or a lot of optional bosses. So I'd they're common enough, but not so common that you can just spam them. But really, it sounds much worse than it actually is, especially if you equip the ring.

@@lucas_lipp oh okay word, that doesn't sound so bad. When u compared them to embers I was thinking that the effects fully reset when you died, but if each use fully resets your health and they're as common as you say (from what you described, sounds like they're roughly as common as embers in DS3) then that doesn't sound that bad. Still, sounds like kind of a pointless and annoying mechanic, I think the Souls system and just having to run back to where you died is plenty to give weight/value to dying imo

The main reason people hate Dark Souls 2 is that it lacks some of the polish the other games. That's because it was made on a shorter time frame with a less experienced director, and also because the first director was fired because he wanted to do something completely different than Dark Souls. They had to patch together what they had and then try to make it work as well as they could. But putting the Miyazaki stans aside, the game is unique and interesting and has more characters that you will slowly get attached to as Majula's population grows. The one thing it really lacks is Patches.

A core mechanic of Dark Souls comes down to dying, it's inevitable that you will die, over and over again. DS2 gets a lot of flack for good reasons it’s not very well put together. Old review by Matthew is a quick video that highlights flaws. If u can stand a much longer series of videos mauler made a great series called in defense of dark souls

Ds2 was like my companion in a very hard time in my life. Not to get too deep but my grandfather had passed away shortly after Ds2 came out. I would sip whiskey and play ds2 and help others beat the ivory king. It was like a therapy for me as crazy as that sounds. Helping others helped me, and majula theme will ALWAYS give me that comforting nostalgic feeling. Great times guys great times!

I thought the area itself was cooler looking. Asylum Demon is pretty eh and, even though Iudex Gundyr is great, the area itself is pretty forgettable. Plus, you get to go back to the starting area in DS2 to unlock more stuff.

@@Yoshyguy21 i feel like that last point still applies to DS1 and DS3, the latter only counting if you count the outside area of Firelink Shrine, but yeah, i agree: you don't need a good intro boss, or any for that matter, for a good intro area

I genuinely don’t understand how so many people enjoy this game so much. It’s poorly designed at best really. The areas are just enemy spam most of the the time, and I find that they’re often unintuitive and kind of boring. Not to mention the general feeling of jank, clunkiness, and lack of polish. The hitboxes are bad more often than they are good, the rolls feel slow and sluggish not even talking about ADP (That’s a whole different can of worms) and the weapons do too. The bosses are honestly just bad on the whole, with few exceptions, and often times a good boss is absolutely obliterated in terms of fun by those awful runbacks (Sir Alonne). It just feels like a vastly inferior experience when compared to the rest of the franchise. Almost everything in the game is done better somewhere else in another souls game. The fashion and power stancing are cool, but that is where my praise ends. To each there own and all, but lord, I just don’t get it.

DS2 is better than elden ring and pushes the souls format more than any other entry by From Software. Critics dunked on DS2 for having a handful of bad boss fights then elden ring has much more reused and god awful boss fights. Pumpkinheads, Statues, Godskin Apostles just to name a few of the extremely overused bosses in elden ring

DS2 is deservedly criticized for its lack of quality, but I find it a lot more agreeable to play than Elden Ring. DS2 feels like an experiment gone wrong but it was still based on the solid foundation that was DS1, and while Elden Ring is much more polished of a game it takes the worst gameplay elements of the previous games and becomes an utter chore by the end.

@@andryuu_2000 While I do enjoy it still, DS2 is a poorly crafted game, whether by intention or lack of time to finish it. Hitboxes, AI, encounters and enemy design, the world and exploration, the PVP, the RPG mechanics, almost every element of the game has issues that can very easily detract from the experience. It's difficult to describe in detail in just a comment, but if you don't mind longer-form content Matthewmatosis and Mauler have very good videos examining the game in-depth.

It could also be: 1. it has colors, unlike other games in the series 2. stamina management actually matters 3. it is a role playing game instead of roll-to-next-bonfire simulator 4. it's the most open Souls game, if you don't count ER 5. 30k Soul Memory run is fun
