A response to Necrit's video 'Are Reactions Harming Channels', which largely exists as a defense of Asmongold's content farm • Are Reactions Harming ...
As a content creator in the vast digital realm of KZbin, I've always been intrigued by the dynamics between original content and reaction videos. These reaction pieces have sparked debates across online communities, questioning the fairness and ethics of this practice. In my latest video, I delve into this complex topic, examining the intricate relationship between creators who invest time and effort into producing original content and reactors who leverage this content for their own channels.
This exploration isn't just about pointing fingers or taking sides. It's an in-depth analysis of how reaction content affects the digital ecosystem. I scrutinize the work and risk involved in content creation versus the seemingly effortless task of reacting. But more than that, I question the broader impact: Does this dynamic truly harm the creators, or is there a hidden benefit in the increased exposure? My video aims to shed light on these nuances, offering a perspective rooted in experience and observation.
Join me as I dissect the arguments, compare the efforts of creators and reactors, and assess the overall influence of reaction content on the KZbin community. Whether you're a fellow content creator, an avid KZbin viewer, or simply curious about the behind-the-scenes of digital content production, this video will provide valuable insights and spark further discussion on a topic that continues to shape our online world.

This is a reupload of a response video that released a few months ago with two minor changes. It was released during that weird downturn for KZbin in Feburary so got overshadowed. As the channel is doing better now, I have decided to re-release it with a better Thumbnail as the last one had the lowest clickthrough of any of the episodes in the series.

I actually meant to ask you what you think of the Jubilee drama. They make videos to which a lot of "creators" react, and Jubilee said in the past they mostly have no issues with it even if the reactions are monetized, but recently they started throwing strikes with no warning, causing some "creators" to worry their channels will be deleted. Aba & Preach responded to precisely because of this.

React content is 100% what people think of when people say “get a real job” to content creators since they’re so prevalent and are the “gateway” into getting some people into online content only for them to realize later that there’s *actual* content out there to enjoy.

I think Legal Eagle and Dr. Mike's vids would probably be the best example of what a reaction video should be without exploiting the entirety of the content. 10-15 second snippets (Or however long it takes to give full context for the scene so that what he's about to say makes sense) then dives into the details about his thoughts on the process, enriching the snippet with knowledge and helping us understand it before going onto the next one. Also the ones where those who created the content shown in the videos (Video game developers reacting to insanely fast speedruns, for example) is probably the best way for the entirety of the content to be shown without it being exploitative, as cutting out a portion of the video in post may leave out context for something that happens later, considering video games and speedruns, if the speedrunner is talking and is setting up his plan earlier in the video for what he's doing. As for why people watch reaction vids that aren't the above examples? Honestly? Maybe the back and forth of watching a video with someone and discussing about it (Reminds me of Moistcritikal's streams where he watched police chases or Forged in Fire when he talked to the chat about whatever about what was happening), along with the reactor in question asking all of the questions before then getting more responses in the comments answering his questions, in addition to recommendations to watch something else. The back and forth between commentor and reactor may be the biggest reason. Addition: If we are to remove or have KZbin set up a bot to take down reaction videos, then that could have a dangerous knock on effect. Try Not To (Insert thing here) vids would get knocked out immediately, despite the fact that the videos have been around for many, many years and people who make the comps, whether for laughs, scares, or otherwise don't appear have a problem with it (As far as I am aware of). I sadly also think that if reaction videos were to be banned or have guidelines to be legal then unfortunately big companies who want to crush any measure of criticism with their product (HBO MAX is the first I can think of, as they had a fraudulent copyright claim on The Little Platoon's dissection of Velma within 24hrs release of part 1 because of how harsh he was, even though he was FULLY within his right to show the content to give context to his words as a part of Fair Use) will have another way to do so, claiming the video is a reaction video, especially if the review is quick enough and KZbin will be forced to go along with it, much like any fraudulent copyright claim, lest they be threatened with legal action by denying or pumping the brakes on it to ensure the validity of said claim. Could I be thinking too much about how petty companies are and how stupid KZbin could be about the rules? Maybe, but then again I've seen enough to make me think that it would get exploited somehow.

KZbin could create a system that would give creators the control over allowing reaction content made on their video. It could be just an overlay of the reaction over the original video that you can choose and turn on. Video revenue could be split based on how many views the reactors actually bring through their channel. If there was a well done researched reaction done, the creator might choose to reward more. There is so much youtube could do to improve the situation but why do it when it rains money.

Not to mention that it's oddly weird that the specific winner in that case wanted to sue them for it, but opted not to do so a few days later all of a sudden. Those kind of things make you realize that (depending on the country and where you go to play your slots) there's something more sinister than "the house always wins" going on - and I'm not only talking about the lack of empathy it takes to want to host slot machines either way, we're talking about millions here that can be used to silence multiple people that potentially could start major investigations in certain establishments - millions that you can take away from people who won at a net win, not even the millions that they already made through people who lost. From a standpoint towards reaction content its absolutely irrelevant (unless we learn about cases where reactors actually paid people to threaten actual creators) apart of the fact that the view distribution coming from it is very loosely related to how slots themselves work.

If they TRULY believe reaction content is good for... anyone, ask them to imagine youtube with no reactors, and then add the reactors in. There are the same number of viewers with the same amount of time to watch content. Well, people also had been against micro transactions (especially in paid games) around 2008-2012, look at how they're incorporated nowadays in gaming without most people caring about it. You just continue to do it, at some point people don't care anymore. Even worse, they come back either way, just think about the complaining people did each time facebook got hacked and their data leaked in the early 2010s, pretty much everyone came back a week later using it at double the rate each time. Loads of the stuff is covered in double morals either way, I don't even want to know how many people that had been against mtx spend hundreds in it while complaining that it should go and won't work. Same for react content, I'd not be surprised if plenty who had been against it watched it regardless.

@@theodordalene438 Yup, it makes sense in some cases (e.g. MMOs) to have some form of keeping the servers running. I've long adapted to how it is now and double check if a game is sold as a product or if its licensed and I own nothing (which already dictates if I even would pay anything above 10€ for it) and if it's sold I wait for a huge discount and make up for it by stocking up to the full price by buying a bit in the mtx store if I end up enjoying the game (sometimes even more depending on how much I like it and played it), if it's licensed on the other hand I only stock up to the full price if I really, really enjoyed playing it up to the point that I got multiple hundreds of hours out of it and did at least 2 playthroughs already - so an absolute rare scenario with how long some games are. Given the discounts they make nowadays and how quickly they often happen I honestly think that they even consider making their games free 2 play (so mtx as a means of earning money) but they still know that they can milk that sweet 60-70€ release price out of die hard fans in addition, so they won't do it.

I wonder if there is a way to update TOS such that you can create a reaction video, but it needs to somehow imbed the original, such that both the algorithm, ad revenue, and so forth are split between the original video and the reaction. I consider reaction content good as long as the person who reacts is related to the topic of their reaction generally in a more professional manner. For example, let's pick a lawyer who watches some documentary of a serial killer. I consider that he is entitled to uploading a reaction video because his content is transformative. He can provide insight most people can't on such a topic. Now pick that same video and show it to xQc. He will just say "ohhh shit that's crazyyyy maaan whaaaaaat", eat and sometimes leave the chair mid reaction. That type of reaction content is definitely not ok. Now, what about more generic content like asmongold's? Well, his main knowledge lies in gaming, and MMORPGs to be more specific. Yes, his opinion brings a valuable perspective on such matters, but if he reacts to some League of Legends content, a game which he never, if barely, played before, then that content is neutral at best. The point is, as long as the reactor is knowledgeable to a more in-depth degree, reaction content is okay. What I consider toxic though even more than reaction videos are sponsorships of products and services they don't fully understand themselves. Last week I saw a reputable tech youtube channel advertise some sort or programming school. For the average viewer, this might even sound like a great opportunity to learn programming. However, the youtuber had no prior knowledge of programming and is unable to accurately assess whether that programming school is actually good or some cheap overpriced scam (which of course, it is). Should you not advertise some VPN just because you don't know how VPNs work? Actually you shouldn't. How can "you", a "insert type of youtuber here" recommend SomeVPN just because "you can watch netflix content from other countries" like come on.

@@AnacondaHL Well, why precisely would youtube stop it either way? The whole point of the platform always had been that anyone can upload whatever they want unless it's gore, sexual or against any other laws - monetization obviously comes with its own fault, but monetization never had been the idea of the platform to begin with - it only came over time to pay for all the costs hosting videos generates at a benefit for those uploading. The only thing you can blame them for is not paying attention to what some of the creators are doing - then again, I don't really know to what extend given that they need to go out with a profit as well to keep it running and therefor can't hire thousands of people just to manually review every video. No matter how you put it, all of the complaining about youtube ends in the same area either way, it's either too expensive to do proper checks next to overly highly restrictive automatic measures that get bypassed to some degree regardless or legal by law.

@Unknown_Genius
@Unknown_Genius Ай бұрын
They're not, your chances to win are just so unlikely that trying it already is a dumb idea. Same with lootboxes in games, where some people somehow think that an item with a 1% drop chance will magically drop when they open box number 100. And those got better odds than slots because it's a 1 in 100 Chance usually (so you're somewhat likely to get it when opening 100 boxes, with almost certainty at around 250 boxes, which still isn't a guarantee), on most slots you're playing with 1 in 5000 chances, some even go into 1 to millions while some rare ones got you covered with "only" in the 1 in 1000 range - or in other words: If you ever opened lootboxes in games that give you higher chances (e.g. 5% for the best item) you already know how screwed you are when playing slots. They solely work because people think that they potentially could earn big - blinking lights and noises (which also come on small wins) do the rest for addictive behavior, which ironically enough is the reason why almost every shooter nowadays presents you with level up animations and points for kills/objectives/supporting on the screen. Funnily enough the reason for having unlimited levels nowadays is the same - people literally got bored of games when they reached max level 15 years ago because they didn't get any more level ups (and therefor reward), which should tell you a lot about the majority of players. To make it even more funny: It's precisely how battlepasses work, people not only willingly pay to work for something they spend money on, they also need that reason to play the game, so devs essentially earn money by giving players tasks they have to complete and blinking lights for skins they'd have sold for the same price otherwise, while being able to make other mtx like additional skins more expensive for even more cash. Think about it for a second, because that's how a single casino game (and its tricks) has affected the entire gaming industry at the end of the day to keep players motivated and play the game (more importantly: spend more money on it) which otherwise wouldn't even enjoy playing the game and possibly would've even refunded the product after an hour.

Here ist my Reaction to your Video: Regular watchers know your opinion about reaction-content. But if we take the title of your video, at least for me signal a "neutral" start into the topic. So i personally think the part "The Reaction Content Scheme" belongs further back. (But i guess not a lot people watch videos until the end) And the way you formulate certain thing (again thinking in relation to the title) could be more neutral (e.g. around 4:40 "steal anything moderately successful...", "prosperity trickles down...") I think comparison to gambling is fitting, but it is strange how you avoid saying that the house "always" wins. In my opinion it is fitting to your comparison between creators and reactor at 4:48. I'm assuming that min max view time would lead to basically no "need" for original content. The algorithm is supporting your viewing behavior. So it would support you in consuming the most possible amount of content. Since Reactor Content is "double" the content (original & reactor). You would only watch reactor content. Since if you watch e.g. Asmongold more often, you should also get more recommendation for similar content. And the need to identify yourself with a group of similar "opinions" (used loosely. Can be in relation with politics). Could lead/is leading to an algorithms driven one-sided information environment(s). (filter bubble) This Point was, in my opinion missing, in the part “What are Reactor”. Since you take Necrit's sentence at 4:09 and take just throw the opinion part out of the windows. I’m gonna stop here. Since I’m not an English native speaker and I realized my understanding of spoken/written English is much better that my ability to put my opinion in written form. So it took some time to write this. I hope that it was at least somewhat understandable. I probably have to speak/write much more in English. I took much to long to find the fitting words, so i could not spend the time to put my thought process into words.

A guy who seemingly dedicated his life to channel growth still took the time to curate and create his own content to react to. Shouldn't repost, like you always say, "you can lead a horse to water but you can't force him to drink" People who know it's bad but still do it simply don't care, people who don't care won't watch anything informative or be willing to stop watching reactors, i can see this video being as effective as linking the original react series on community posts. Reposting this would just harm the channel really

Recently my video was reacted to for the first time in my "career" and it was very fun to watch that reaction. I asked the person to delete it and he quickly complied, but I now understand how content creators would find it fun to see someone react to their video. Like if that whole reaction was made specifically for me, it would be very cool to see. So if you don't think about the implications of that reaction competing with your original video or it's influence on the market, it's understandable why creators find it cool that people are reacting to their stuff.

16:00 Now that I think about it, his test DOES make sense and it's actually pretty good. The conclusions were bad, but the test does show us something interesting. The number of views on the reaction video is an **indicator** of how successful the original video was. It's like in games, where the health bar is proportional to the health points. But unlike other indicators (likes, shares, etc.), it's competing for the same resources

at least make a new video man. you continue to make yourself look silly trying to spread awareness about an actual issue. to the extent of just reuploading an old video covering it which is in essence the same as react content cuz youre making money off already produced content. pretty silly.

What if you got a view for reach reactor's view and their "view" only counted as like 1/2 or 1/3 as far as monetization is concerned? A new category of content can be created for this, with a single check box and URL field added to an upload form, having uses signal that they are reacting to a video and to link the original content. Then it would be super easy to enforce a rule that any reaction content on the platform, in any form at all, must follow this system or be immediately banned and any earnings from it shall be either rescinded or held out of future earnings until balance is satisfied (and ideally, original content created is compensated with these withheld earnings). I think there's a way to do it that makes sense, and money, for both the content creator and the reactor.
@brianjordan9446
@brianjordan9446 Ай бұрын
@devmastere they DO have an incentive to do this, especially KZbin. Content creators will just leave for platforms that support them more, or go behind paywalls which is bad for everyone. It would be a nightmare for KZbin if this were to happen, for how large they are, they are not as profitable as people think. Losing their larger content creators over reaction content would be a massive blow and would likely see Google sell YT off. KZbin is not just a social network like Facebook or Twitter. This has a domino effect. Fleeing content creators mean less viewers of that original content. This also means less reactors, and those viewers go away too. The cycle will feed itself, spread to other verticals of content on YT, and would become very, very difficult to stop. Additionally, if YT were to start losing money like this, you'd see them start taking pretty dramatic steps to become profitable again ... and that likely involves paywalls, more ads, and more invasiveness like other platforms. There's way to do this where both sides earn what they're supposed to (creators more, reactors less but not nothing) and no one has to leave the platform due to inaction or all their content profits being siphoned off.

@@fourtyseven47572actually how much of the original work is included is one of the four factors to determine fair use. You didn't transform the content of the video, it's still the same video.

@@joedav67 You guys say this like its been cemented in law completely. Most of this stuff hasnt been tried and tested in court. If I watch an entire 10 minute video, and my reaction makes it 1 hour, that is obviously a transformation, and I guarantee a judge would agree, unless you have a court case saying otherwise. Theres no logical argument to say that wouldnt be transformative. Like you said thats ONE factor to fair use, its not the end all be all like you guys make it seem.
