A 300,000. Dollar riding arena and 2 horses in extreme pain. I dont understand. Any stable I worked at alerted owners and demanded vet care immediately. As an employee. Our only concern was the horses. Even over our jobs. To the point of quitting to walk collicking horses instead of cleaning frozen manure in minus 10 degree weather.

Why weren't they talking about the obvious extereme pain the oldest horse was in. He was quivering, went down, had hair missing & pressurer points from laying in trying to relieve pain 😢 It important to talk about the Last Act of Kindness being the most loving thing in some cases.😢 Very thankful though for their dedication to both horses!

While I understand the anger about the condition of the horses, because that was horrible, especially when Bravo was put down and we don't even know if Sugarplum's feet can be saved... to answer question how could someone tape horses hoofs like that, the answer is mental health problems. They mentioned in the video that the owner had dementia and by definition, that is loss of memory and thinking abilities that interfere with daily life. Someone with dementia might not have the ability to rationally decide if the horse needs vet or farrier and in their mind (affected by dementia), wrapping feet like that might be a reasonable thing to do while having the best intentions for the horse. Unfortunately, what is reasonable for person with dementia is not always reasonable for people like us. And I think that the state the horses were in, we can safely say that dementia was probably not a recent thing. I not trying to take the side of the owner and their family, but just explain why the owner acted the way they did. Dementia is not easy and everyone who reads this, please, check often on your parents and grandparents, so if this ever happen to them, you can step up and help sooner than this owner's family could.

The cheap way to add some comfort for a foundered horse is taping some pad or foamboard insulation on their hooves. I picked up a very loved "rescue" mare years ago and took her straight to the university's farrier. I was a little concerned what I'd find under the duct tape. Had x-rays and shoes put on. She had been very well cared for, proper hoof trims etc. so it was all good. Watching you fight with that tape makes me very glad that I let the farrier do it! It's a wonderful fix in a pinch, but not to leave on long term.

What if they were using all that tape to try and bind her feet so she wouldn't be needing farrier care? Like they used to do in the old days to women's feet to keep them dainty looking by keeping them small.
@Katseye1028 ай бұрын
Years ago when we had horses, we had a mare that would be a bit stubborn about loading onto a trailer. What we tried and worked without any trauma was taking a long (maybe about 6ft) pole with something attached at the end, a bit of cloth, or even a whip pole would work. And while one of us had her attention at her head, one of us would tickle her hock with the pole, just a little, like it was a fly or something. She would move forward onto the trailer trying to get away from the “fly” at her hocks. But the other person at her head had to hold her attention, or she’d see us, and not move. Just an idea you could try for loading one that may not want to…..😃😃

In this case, Sugarplum simply had never loaded in a trailer before in her life. She was born on the property so she just had no idea what she was supposed to be doing :/

How someone can not see that and let them suffer like that is beyond me. I understand the owner being ill but any reasonable person could look at those horses and see them in pain. I've used WD-40 with my vets ok. It also makes arthritis feel better temporarily. I learned about how well WD 40 works during the Alaskan Pipeline Build. An old machinest would soak his hands in a 5 gallon bucket. Also one of the old vets I worked for used it to remove spruce pitch. Which all of our horses and mules would get into all the time. It is less toxic than DMSO
@OnceUponaTimeline8 ай бұрын
DMSO is not toxic at all though, although it is a diuretic and a bit of a blood thinner so that has to be considered for some horses. But it's also very antiinflammatory, very good stuff for certain issues. @@Alaskadinger

"How heavy is too heavy to ride a horse? There is no exact weight limit for horseback riding, but as a general rule, horses should not carry more than 15%- 20% of their total body weight. This includes the weight of the tack as well as the rider." do you ever take this into consideration when you are selling your horses to people? or is the object to just find them a stable home?
@ilovekhemosabey8 ай бұрын
This percentage has been totally disproven so that isn’t a stat that should even be considered.
@Kirmeins8 ай бұрын
I think riding in general is not good for equine backs. As far as I'm informed, the tissue starts growing numb (numb comes after uncomfortable/pain) after about 15 min under any rider - regardless of weight and saddle. An equine that is ridden (or carries weight) regularily will develop lasting tissue changes in their backs. No matter how long we were doing it in recent human history - horses, donkeys, etc. were never meant to carry weight on their back. Sadly, few humans want an equine as just a companion animal. They think "ride" when they think of "horse". So if you want to rehome all these poor souls you'll have to live with the fact that most of them are gonna be ridden.
@PonyTalesRefuge8 ай бұрын
We take it into consideration, yes. Most people are aware of this and think of it themselves prior to us needing to say anything. I know if I was 200+lbs, I wouldn't even think to try and ride a 14HH Arab or POA. Lol!
