The Beatles had many gifts. Genius songwriters. Superb musicianship. Wonderful singers. But the band's "feel," as is so often the case, had a lot to do with the drummer. Join The Weeklings' Joe Bellia as he gets behind the kit and digs into Ringo's special sauce.

I never understood the Ringo bashers, I’ve been in bands with them. I think he’s one of the best if not best rock drummer. That’s feel as this video explained very well, but on his parts. We’ve all heard “Ringo plays the right part for the song”....well, that cause it seems largely true. He does and it takes a very unselfish musician to do so.

Ringo was the perfect drummer for The Beatles. Like the rest of the band, it wasn't about him, it was about the song. They made records, that was there thing. I can't imagine better drum parts than what Ringo played on those records - which will be around for a very long time.

I was a child in the sixties and played Meet The Beatles and wore out the grooves. Every time I tried to tap out the beat, I would be amazed at Ringo's variation and style and faltered to keep up - AND I KNEW NOTHING OF MUSIC. The classic pop seemed effortless and joyful but it was purposeful and stylized. I mean, trying to karaoke is tricky with those sweet and yet rough vocals. Great demo and history lesson Joe!

I think Ringo's drumming has been underappreciated in The Beatles for so long. It's often the drummer in a band that can make or break the sound and chemistry of a group. Led Zeppelin wouldn't have been Led Zeppelin without Bonham. The Who has never the same after Keith Moon passed away. Could you imagine Rush playing without Neil Peart? Ringo was the final piece of the puzzle to join The Beatles and he meshed perfectly. Just my two cents.

One aspect you'll notice with Ringo is how many different bass drum patterns he used. Many of them had never been heard before but they sure were heard by many drummers afterwards. That was the huge difference between Ringo and Pete Best. Pete played almost everything with a four on the floor bass drum/ Boring. No wonder The Beatles loved the difference. It was quoted that the Beatles said "wow what is this?" the first time they played with Ringo... such a change he made. A Groove!

a valid description of Ringo's unique talent
@shannonwittman950
@shannonwittman950 4 жыл бұрын
I've always felt that the great Ringo Starr's talent is not that he's all over his drums like Moon or Bonham, but simply that he always knows what to do and when to do it., to best complement a song. Moreover, his back-beat cannot be broken with a sledgehammer. I immediately noticed Ringo's drumming upon my first hearing of a Beatle record, namely "I Wanna' Hold Your Hand." I was no drummer, I was a little kid. Yet, during most of this very British Rock song, I noticed he kept his hi-hat released, seemingly for the auditory energy it provided. Then I noticed he held the hi-hat shut in the middle portion, "... and when I touch you I feel happy inside ..." which is a sort of romantic interlude. The ticking on the hi-hat is ordered and quiet, and might evoke twinkling stars in the night sky (see also George's repetitive acoustic guitar licks on "And I Love Her"). But when the song takes off into energy again, Ringo releases the high hat and joyously accents the repeating "I Can't Hide" crescendo with simultaneous and matching whacks on the cymbal and bass drum. Back then, I just thought that was 'waaaaaaay cool. Still do.

As a former music teacher about to turn 65, and big Beatles fan [probably the reason I became a music teacher!] I appreciate your analysis being spot on....after decades of people usually not from our generation who actually lived through the Beatles era, finally Ringo is getting more credit for being "the click track" [I just KNOW you have seen that video lol] and so inventive even in the early recordings. He set a standard FOR THE FUTURE. For decades, most were judging his playing from the eyes on their butts...called "Hindsight" from the present, claiming it was "primitive and easy, then proceed to imitate as you say, and butcher it. [Good point on the bass drum accented 1st beat and the hi hat "both directions stick attack."] Criticism out of time period context is like saying Gene Krupa was no good because he's "old school." Such BS. Ringo was naturally musical, intuitive, and would LISTEN to what was going on around him. He was like Hal Blaine, it was "What can I do to help the song and style, NOT what can I do to get a solo in. Lead guitar players have this same problem....back off jack, let the singer sing, it's not about you right now. Not all songs are call and response you idiots, that's for the blues. How many times have I heard a Ringo lick from every drum set player, pro or not, doing a fill in at the end of a phrase [or not in an appropriate place too] claiming they invented it when it's a Ringo fill, or has a foundational core Ringo invented? too many times!!! Love his triplets at the end of Long Tall Sally, they just floor me, the accents, the energy and all. Only jazz drummers were doing that on their records....until the short triplets on Elvis' Hound Dog record and other artists at the birth of rock and roll. Johnny B. Goode was sort of a half swing, against Chuck Berry's straight boogie guitar. Everyone plays it wrong, they don't swing it, they do straight duple beats. They play the guitar lick totally wrong. Ringo took that triplet idea and expanded them for the big finish on Long Tall Sally, with entertaining body movements onstage. I was in an oldies band on keys, and this bass player I knew well who took over the drums when ours died, he went home, unknown to me, and learned the Ray Charles What'd I Say drumming pattern injected into the Beatles "I Feel Fine." The next week, we played it, he nailed it, my jaw dropped, and I said to him "Damn! Your as good as Ringo Starr!" He took it as a supreme compliment. Others would take it as in insult. How stupid. HE DID NAIL IT! About 64 years old, a furnace guy ...unbelievable. enjoyed your enthusiasm.

Well said. I’ve managed to play with 2 drummers in the past who played for the song with feel and groove, one was the drummer from INXS and he knew about laying the beat down for the song… I’ve also had the misfortune to play with several drummers trying to show off, throwing rolls all over the place and generally trying to draw as much attention to themselves as possible. Its no fun trying to lock a groove down with that type of player. I would love to play with anyone that could play anywhere near as well as Ringo .

Good analysis. I've always felt that the Beatles brought a "take no prisoners" attitude to pop music that was new. The rhythm section really drove the songs, which til then tended to be polite and kept way in the back so as to not distract from the singers. I think that "in your face" approach is what attracted so many aspiring musicians!

In all the detailed descriptions of how Beatles songs were created, I have never seen any information on how Ringo arrived at his percussion contribution to the tunes. He played for each song what he felt the groove should be and John and Paul and George went along with that, apparently. His input was unusual, unorthodox and perfect.

@@michavandam It's not true. The others would usually give some input, but only on top of what he was naturally playing, it wasn't until later on, Sgt Pepper/White Album that Paul got really specific and controlling over the drum parts. The reason why he doesn't have "memorable beats" after the Beatles is because he doesn't have hardly any memorable songs after the Beatles, when he had interesting material to work with he came up with more interesting stuff. Actually if you listen to his albums, he's still doing some fun stuff and Ringo fills, but the songs aren't that good.

@@snippletrap Their ideas were not "often conflicted", it's not like Paul, George, and John were throwing differing things out, whoever was the main writer of the song had the say, even then it was mainly Ringo. Abe's great. Closest to Ringo in drumming style but not Ringo of coarse. In the drumming world there is only one Star(r), the rest are all legends, greats and just drummers, there is even a Best drummer in there. The Beatles went from the best drummer to a Star(r) drummer.

Really enjoyed this video. I am so pleased that Ringos drumming is getting the respect it deserves, personally I think he is the greatest of them all. All of these videos on KZbin of Ringos drum parts show that he is a technically great player (the middle section of Something for instance) or the switching time signature on tracks like Happiness is a warm gun. A great drummer

You know I like to think of myself as being a really good amateur musicologist. I like to think I know a lot about the classic rock era and the relationship between R&B/jazz African-American music (which are my cultural roots by the way) and Rock ‘n’ roll from the mid 60s to probably the mid 90s. The grunge sound definitely was influenced by everything that occurred in the 1960s, and not just stuff that was considered rock ‘n’ roll. But I’m not a musician. I am a fan. The amount of information is available now because of technology is actually forcing me to learn music theory even if I don’t want to. I’m actually amazed at how much I did not know about the genius Ringo Starr. Thank you for this video I will like and subscribe

This is great stuff and welcome education on the soundtrack of my childhood! I’ve seen The Weeklings live and you guys really swing! Minor tech issue: your voice volume was really low - not sure if you were using a voice mic. I recommend the RØDE Go wireless (with tie clip lavaliere) which can plug directly into a smartphone or DSLR. That way you’ll get more voice volume without too much drum.

Worked with a drummer and my son used to be a drummer. Neither gets it. When I was young it was Paul that made the band, when Macartney’s first solo album came out I realized that he needed Lennon to give him the creative edge that kept the music fresh. When “All Things Must Pass” came out I realized that Harrison was the heart, and certainly the spiritual part of the band... now after a life of listening it’s Ringo that has always made it fun, catchy, he made the rest stars.

@@michaelscott9995 John-led material dominated their albums all the way through Rubber Soul, where it started to balance out, then become more Paul centric (White Album being an exception where there is a ton of Lennon material). Look at an album like Hard Days Night where John takes lead on something like 9 of the 13 tracks.
