Glad You Asked host Joss Fong has been fascinated by crying her entire life. She’s even kept a spreadsheet of every time she cries to figure out what patterns lie in the triggers. This episode explores how crying evolved in humans and what it tells us about ourselves.

Thanks for watching, everyone! I was a little embarrassed to admit all the cheesy things that made me cry, but after working on this episode, I've decided that crying is a really valuable reminder of the values you hold and the people (or animals) you care about. Those tears mean we aren't just saying that we care about things like kindness and justice, we actually do care on a fundamental level, maybe even more than we realize. Keep an eye out for new, free episodes of Glad You Asked every Tuesday. And don't forget to subscribe to our channel and turn on notifications (🔔) to get more Vox videos: bit.ly/voxyoutube -joss

Hhmmm, I'm 53 years old. My father passed away three days after my 21st birthday. I didn't cry at the news or the funeral. I haven't cried for him at all. Six months ago I nail gunned a nail through my forearm. It hurt so much I cried all the way to the hospital and beyond. Why the difference?

@@ferglesnerk Your "programmed" by society to not cry for emotional purposes, as a lot of men are. Or you just simply dont have that emotional connection between these muscle and your brain.

@@ferglesnerk my take away from the video was that some people just seem to not cry as much. maybe it's a personality thing, maybe psychological pain isn't so visceral for you, who knows? but a nail gun to the arm will definitely cause visceral pain that can't be ignored.

Timothy Novotny the causes of anger r being hurt or frustrated, so when ur angry cause ur hurt itll make sense to cry, which in turns releases endorphins which makes u calmer or relieved, someone who cried for too long might also say they feel numb, as in numb dont feel anything at all, any sort of emotions, it could feel like a restart button to not wanting to be angry

I have a pretty logical reason to why people feel relaxed when they cry but im not a scientist, so it doesn't really matter But i think the reason is that some nerves cool down when you cry, causing you to relax, mentally, your brain realizes you let the pain out, causing you into a relaxing, or going to sleep, stage, that's why many people cry their selves to sleep

Extremely well done! I actually held a presentation obout the topic once. One thing/occasion which also is peculiar for crying is witnessing a special moment (like first day of school) the theory there was that we moan the passing of time or that nothing can last forever.. In general realized that I really cry seldomly max. twice a year. For years I just couldn't, in spite of being heavily depressed. At the funeral of a loved one I tried to make me do it, but it didn't work. Now I'm more in touch with my emotions so occasionally I do cry, and it really is soothing 😌

Crying is partly a matter of letting go. If you are too much scared of letting go, for what reason ever, you won't cry, even if you want to. It's like your silent fears have been wrapping chains around the valve you want to be opened.

Great video. Everytime i remember my mothet and how life would be with her by my side, makes me really cry, and a Song makes it more strong.

Why did I think I wouldn't cry while watching this video? I'm such an emotionally driven person. I literally cry whenever i see someone cry :(

The one clip from film or TV that gets me every time without fail is at the end of Titanic, after Rose has died and she walks through the Grand Staircase and sees everyone who died on the Titanic. There's others that get me most of the time, but that is the only clip that consistently gets me every time.

Great video! Front to back, this was engaging and interesting at the same time. One thing was missing for me personally: I think that the probability to cry is very much amplified if one is tired and/or exhausted. Being a father of three little kids, this is a very well known condition for me, and I can attest with absolute certainty that when I am exhausted and tired, I will cry a lot easier. Which totally falls in line with the summary of the video that crying developed as a mechanism to show others that we need help. :-)

wow man, that's actually a really great point. My brother just had his first child and he started crying a lot more often. Glad to know, in light of what you said, that he needs more help. :)

In 2018, on Thanksgiving day, the football thingy was playing commercials, and one of those commercials was of disabled children playing video games with customized controllers. It touched my gamer heart to the core, when I saw that the little kids could enjoy video games despite their physical disabilities. If I ever want to cry on command, I always remember that commercial.
