Why Do we Grow Everything on Mounds?

In this video I explain why I grow everything at Vinaka Urban Farm on mounds ("bukes" in Fijian). The short answer is to facilitate drainage because Ohio is a very wet climate, especially in the spring, but bukes also warm up faster in the spring, extending Ohio's limited growing season.

I'm in Adams co Ohio, zone 6B, & the glaciers didn't make it down this far, so my soil is poor....i just had 9 big holes dug w/ a back ho to plant trees & then we had a big rain ^& the holes are still full of water....they drain poorly so i'll add more soil to the hole & go w/ a raised bed....planting Apple trees, Pears, Asian Persimmons & Chinese Chestnuts...
