Ego or discrimination or our sense of separateness from the rest of this universe or "I" developed so that the "I" can consciously and willingly surrender itself to the Divine Self. All animals are in Hukam but they are not conscious beings. We are superior beings that developed our conscious minds so that we may consciously surrender and subordinate our egos to the Divine Hukam, something which animals cannot do. Animals are automatic, always in Hukam, but they're not aware of the fact that they're in Hukam. We can come in Hukam after relinquishing control of our egos and be fully aware of the fact that we're in Hukam, which is the ultimate bliss. Also, the Universe becomes conscious of itself through our eyes, through our experiences, through our egos. If there was no ego, there would only be Oneness and everything would be in Hukam. But the Universe wouldn't be aware of its own existence. So the Universe created the ego, created this sense of separateness that we feel so that the Universe could experience itself uniquely and from different perspectives. When the human ego sings praises of the Divine, sings praises of this Universe (i.e. Naam Simran), and surrenders itself (die b4 u die), it is really the Universe that's praising its own self through the vehicle that it created, the "I".

I'm just a curious outsider, so forgive me if this seems offensive, but Is anyone considering the neuroscience behind the sense of I? My limited understanding is that there is a thing called default mode network that is creating separations in our minds as a sort of survival mechanism, but practices like meditation and perhaps certain chemical agents can dampen activity in this part of the brain and lead to a more global functioning where information is able to move outside of the normal boundaries and elicit the classic mystical experience people have talked about for all human history. I'm not trying to reduce everything to materialism, but I am trying to tie what I believe to be a very amazing and straightforward practice of Sikhi with what little I know about science. I feel like the world as a whole is close to knowing The Truth that Sikhi has been quietly expressing for the past several hundred years, and we would do well to learn the wisdom of The Guru and follow the example of harmonious living practiced by Sikhs. Not to romanticize it, I know there are issues, but I've been pondering our predicament on this planet for awhile and I feel Sikhi gets to the heart of it very clearly.

Depression is a form long term stress... all animals have this it is survival stress is what keeps antelope and zebras alert on savannah from attack of lions or hyenas with out stress they would care free going about eating grass, and would soon be prey... stress saves them.. humans now have no predator. And that stress is diverted to places where it's not required and results in negative effects we too come from the jungle... we are hunter gathers

Ego was necessary for us to get separated from God, then to descend to earth to be born as humans or etc...it was a necessary thing... Ego started when the spirit descended into universal mind to be dressed up with mind...mind created that bubbles of ego and separation of God...it was a necessary thing.. At the beginning we were at Suchkhand area, we told God we want to take an adventure down there.. God promised to us he will send masters to take us back to suchkhand.. We were not kick down due to some sins... This games of sins believe by other religion Actually started on PLATFORM of mind or Universal Mind, or sargun platform which actually is duality platform.. Our beginning we started the beginning on non duality of NIRGUN..

I came to understand the ego, and recognize it in me and others mostly through reading Eckart Tolle's books. I am finding that there are lots of parallels between Eckhart's and the Gurbani's teachings. Correct me if I am wrong?

Ekart Tolle and Satpal are both Advaitists. Satpal gives an advaitic twist to Gurbani, which it is not. Read up on advaita.

I completely disagree. The ego has absolutely nothing to do with the evolution of species. Absolutely not. To make it short, it's about a problem of education, problems with self-esteem, relational, and eventually some psychological problems.
