Mr. Kelly is an absolute boss in explaining things. Sometimes someone can tell you something 1000 times, and you still dont get it. Me personally, Brian has had a way of getting through my wall of idiocy and making things make sense.

For me Brian really has a gift in that he is able to explain music theory in a way whereby even someone like me can understand. I had tried to learn music theory before and gave up in frustration thinking that it was just beyond me until I found Zombie guitar. Some people have all the knowledge in the world but to be able to teach it is a whole other skill that not many people possess. Fortunately Brian is one of the few that does. have that skill and has spent hours upon hours perfecting it. I am truly grateful.

I like talking about this stuff. Nice to hear your take. The pent. scale got me by for a long time. After I learned the other two notes, I began to get into playing a lot more. It's so much more fun with the extra notes. And easy!

You know what Brian, I love watching you teaching yourself as you educate others. I know all this (as much as you can). Yet I enjoy watching you trying to explain it to others. It's an education in itself. Nice playing also. Over the last 8? years I've been watching your videos and if it's not to presumptive, I think you've matured a lot as a player in terms of your soloing structure. More melodic, more confident... I had to log out of Zombie guitar to put this comment on KZbin because everyone there already knows mate.

Hi Brian, Great lesson as I'm a Pentatonic nut and you just opened up a new way of expressing my playing ability. It may not sound like much but to me it's a world of difference. Can't thank you enough for your lesions as this old guy loves music and ever since I've watched your lesions way back when it opened up a new world to me. Thank you Brian and hope you and the family are doing well, Gee the other Kelly 😎🎸

Ya know I have been watching you for years and am a Zombie member and for some crazy reason I have not been aware (that is me not paying attention) of the three pattern diatonic scale approach. I know pattern ONE cold, but have not ventured out from there cuz I always thought, ugh, there are 6 more patterns. You just opened my eyes and now I am really intrigued! Time to head back to the Zombie site PRONTO. Maybe this is going to be a breakthrough for me like with your on/off chord tone targeting video that was a major step forward for me.

Isn't it amazing, Brian. How easy it is, to learn the minor and major pentatonic scale patterns. But then, get stuck in a rut!? Then when you add the other two notes...On, Man! Real progress!

Hello, Brian. Some books of music theory talks about the "modes" of the pentatonic scale, not only major and minor!!! What a confusion!

When I really mastered the pentatonic scale, I could not unhear it. 😂 Though, I found it was really beneficial to master the pentatonic scale first. Then you realize you need more passing tones from the missing notes. I naturally learned the diatonic scale out of melody necessity. I think that it should be mentioned that the missing notes are really dissonant and that is why they aren't a part of the 5 notes.
@zombieguitar
@zombieguitar 16 күн бұрын
That's not necessarily true though. If you play a CHORD TONE within the diatonic scale, then it will sound great. Otherwise, it will sound dissonant!

@@zombieguitarExactly! The two additional notes are half-step intervals from the pentatonic notes, and if used over the wrong chords can blow up the melody. But as chord tones can be sublime. Great video as usual, Brian.

I've been reading about these for a while, now, and thought I understood the distinctions. I didn't. This video explains it all so simply and completely (in true Brian style). I'm always looking for a better way; that tends to be a bad approach. Persistently staying with something that seems to work can save a lot of wasted time/effort/energy. Is Zombie the best series out there? Dunno; I suspect a lot of that depends upon the individual/circumstance. But, has it proved to be a solid, reliable, enjoyable, and, productive approach to learning how to play guitar? Hell yeah. Am I going to stop looking for the Holy Grail? Doubt it. But, I plan to spend a lot less time looking for it. Great material is here; I just need to cut out the distractions and spend more time with it...

The order I recommend is: 1.) pentatonic scale 2.) diatonic scale 3.) CAGED system for chord tone targeting

@zombieguitar thank you so much for answering my questions. I'm sure you probably have answered that many times. I apologize :( I think you should be the one to do a video on how to approach playing lead because I love your NO BS attitude :) There is so much confusion with all these videos on KZbin about learning caged, pentatonic, triads, scales, etc.....and no one is sure where to start. My biggest fear is wasting so much time on something when you should have been learning something else first :/ Thank you again so much for all that you do!!!

So, essentially, the difference between the major pentatonic and minor pentatonic is the same thing logically as the difference between the Ionian and aeolian modes except 2 notes less? Another question: You referenced the pentatonic as a more rocky sound. How would you “reference” the Harmonic scale, and melodic minor scales, ie when to use?
@zombieguitar
@zombieguitar 16 күн бұрын
Good questions... 1st question...yes! 2nd question...unless you are a jazz player, you probably won't be using the melodic minor scale very often (unless you happen to come across a dominant IV chord in the rhythm section). The harmonic minor scale on the other hand, is one of my favorites. I have always thought of the harmonic minor scale as sounding "exotic" or "Arabian"...that's just how it sounds to me 🤷. Melodic minor reminds me of the creepy vibe that I get from augmented chords and the whole-tone scale though !

Lol, no. No it did not make sense. That's not an issue with your teaching, which is excellent. It's an inditement of my damn brain. I've been watching music theory videos from you, Ben Eller, and others for years and I keep hoping some of it will make sense. Sadly, it never does. Maybe my brain is broken.
