I always tear up in those first two accending/ decending melody lines. They have something so calming yet so tremendously sad. Man I love her so much. Didn't think I could really fall in love with a fictional woman... but here I am. I have only played the remake so I don't have the experience of her death... yet... but I watched Advent Children for the first time today and cried like a little girl everytime she appeared. And I'm not much of a crier. But Aerith made me into one.

You see, tifa is the one to bring him back and start his journey. Shes important, it might not look like it at first, but she is. Just as every other character. Just as aerith, barret… you cannot remove a character and expect the story to be the same.

Aerith's Theme is undeniably glorious on how it captures her story within the game. Uematsu-sensei did a really great job of this creation of his. It really brings me to tears, even not seeing what did happened to her. And if I may suggest, can you do a review for Terra's Theme? There are a lot of things I feel for that OST and I think it's one of top 5 OSTs in Final Fantasy. 😖

Despite the memes, the jokes and the countless debates of her vs Tifa... we can all agree that FF7... at its core... was a game about her. Her music perfectly defines this with the melodies of the sadness, the sweet moments and the heroic upstands to define her character. Had it not been for Aeris, then Cloud would not find happiness. He would not be embarking on a dangerous journey and quest and she most certainly wouldn't have saved the planet without her sacrifice. Hands down, my absolutely favourite video game character ever and probably my video game crush. She's 10 times what Tifa would be, 100 times what Zelda would be and 1000 times what Peach would be... Also a side note, I hope you do some videos analyzing the brilliance of some of the KH main character themes.

I agree Tifa's theme is under appreciated. Aerith's is still my favorite for is wistfulness and mournfulness. But Tifa's theme has this comfortable home feeling while also giving a feeling of power. It really defines her character as well, I think of it as the "Teddy Bear" theme because it reminds me of the comfortable softness of a Teddy as well as the child like feeling that Teddy can protect me from anything.

Well I mean they serve different purposes. When I heard Tifa's theme for the first time it gave me a feel that, even after the destructive bombing mission and the extreme class disparities, there is still life and culture amongst the trash. Tifa's theme is comforting even when things aren't okay, like it's *convincing* you to relax and accept reality slowly, which matches Tifa's role as Cloud's support system. But that's just what I hear 🤷

Great job on this video! I’m finally starting to get the theory vocabulary to talk about how effective Uematsu’s work is. Your analysis really resonated with me. I always think of Flowers Blooming in the Church as Aerith’s theme since it’s heard the first time you spend time with her. The harmony is different at a few points (flat VII, and the return to the IV before resolution), and the arrangement is so dreamlike and plaintive. You also hear the call-and-response in the later parts that make it feel like a conversation with destiny - almost like a duet. I think it would be interesting to compare it with Tifa’s theme, which can also feel like a duet. Not that we need any more fuel for ship wars. I’m just fascinated by how different but still beautiful and compelling the musical representations of these characters are - and how well they fit. The music really tells the story at the emotional level. Uematsu is a wizard. More videos please!

Something I find incredible about this theme is that Uematsu composed it with the reference of Aerith as an innocent but tragic character; the scene he mentions as his reference is a scene where Aerith waited for Zach who never returned from his last mission. Uematsu says that had he known about her death he would have made a song designed to pull on your heart and make you cry. While we did not get that heart wrenching song, I am glad for the beautiful song we got.

Great video here. You explaining how many of Nobuo's themes are crafted and the inspiration behind helps us understand this though process to many memorable themes used through his soundtrack buildup for FF games and other Square Enix titles. Aeris' theme is really one of his best and after you describe her personality based on the motif created for her, her character is that much more heartbreaking . So simple yet it evokes emotions for the character and a strong sense of nostalgia when I hear it. Already I get teary eye as it played in this video. I never played Final Fantasy until last week when I finally decided to play the VII Remake last week. So I didn't have much of a connection to the characters. But damn Aerith had a hard impact on me. I didn't care much fore the series till, thankfully, Sephiroth was included in Smash, cause that amazing trailer made me a fan so I wanted to know more. Turns out I devoured the game. I literally played through it non-stop, even all through the night. And I love every character. I even tried to avoid building to much of an emotional bond with Aerith, due to me knowing what is supposed to happen to her, cause Mister Sakurai spoiled it in the reveal. Thanks btw. XD But I failed miserably at not building said emotional connection. After two hours of running around with her I shipped her with Cloud so hard, and with him, I fell in love with her. Never thought I could seriously fall in love with a woman from a video game but her I am. She is easily one of my, if not my favourite female videogame character of all time. Just from one playthrough. And that even though Zelda had that spot since I was a little kid. I just know that, if they should kill Aerith in the sequel, what I'm hoping they won't, but I have the feeling that most players wouldn't be sadisfied with that, I'm gonna be emotionally scared for months. Heck I watched Advent Children today for the first time and everytime she appeared and her theme started to play I almost cried... all it takes is six notes... it hits me hard. And I'm not a person who cries easily. Sorry for the essay. Just had to tell someone who understands. XD

Great vid 👍 I noticed that around 5:49 (where you talk about the 2nd section of the melody) you start with a two note anacrusis into bar 1, then bar 2, but bar 3 has a D minim, B crotchet, G crotchet (laaaa, la, la, lalalaaaa). But the correct rhythm in that bar is D crotchet, B minim, G crotchet (la, laaa, la, lalalaaaa). I'm obviously nit picking quite a bit here, but I made the call to mention it 😅 Really, enjoyed the video though! Subbed 👍👍

It is not Dorian then, but why does it give off this uncanny Dorian vibe? Because of the listful timbre of being both major upwards (hopefully) and minor downwards (sad) in its first motive, interlaced with off-notes in its chords as it progresses. It feels like a frail uncanny world gets opened up, and then gets closed again by sorrow. I am not a serious musician here, just trying to make sense of it. 😅

You're right that dorian often has that sense of hope/despair because of the major sixth in an otherwise minor scale, so your ear is on the right track with that! In this case, it's actually the use of the minor seventh in major - a similar type of modification as dorian.
