I have a deep impulse to collect things, so I limit myself to two types of collection : cheap and not too much space consuming (stamp and old campy science fiction books) and more expensive but rarer (miniature white and blue teapots and prestigious edition of some of my favorite books). That way I can manage.

Yeahhh, I often attach sentimental value to things so it's hard for me to decide what's "cheap" vs "expensive" 👁👄👁 but this is a great way to manage! maybe in my case i could categorize into "functional" vs "non-functional". i always try to think twice before buying something non functional (i usually endup buying anyways hehe)

Trinkets is such a huge part of me! It's definitely something that I have collected through the course of time, through travels, gifts, etc. Also! Trinkets are so engrained in Filipino cultrure, we call it anik-anik. Love this video Duda!

A while back I decided that I want to own less stuff. It's a journey and I'm nowhere aiming to become a minimalist, just to have a little bit less stuff - especially things I don't use, that are useful for others. I decided on a few rules, because just like a crow, I have the need for collecting stuff. I'm allowed things with sentimental value, but up to a resonable point. And I'm allowed unlimited amounts of pretty rocks, bc rocks are great

okay i feel you! the sentimental value stuff are the hardest... if someone i love gives me a gift, forget it, i'm NEVER throwing that away. i even keep some wrappings and receipts (i should do a junk jorunal but im too lazy lol)

I LOVE trinkets, and have for a long time, I used to bring home so many rocks from school because out by the trees where the teachers told us not to go, there was LOTS of quartz! I also love to go to renaissance faires and for the past few years, I've indulged in the "Trinket Trading" community! Lots of faire folk create little trinkets to trade with others, whether it's to compliment someone's outfit and offer them a pair of handmade earrings or just making someone's day with a clay amulet they made, it's a great little community to be a part of because it's made with love and spare parts!! My friends and I do trinket-making sessions where we take old things, bits and bobs and just use them to make trinkets to hand off to other people at the ren faire, it's honestly half the fun!

I’m the type to collect anything remotely cute from vacations: a cute napkin, a train ticket, a cool souvenir bag, postcards, rocks, coins. I like looking at nice things, even if they’re stocked in a drawer and I take them out to look at them from time to time. My mom really hates this habit because it has made my space looked cluttered and I’ve taken this last months to organize and declutter my space. I noticed I also kept things that made me feel bad: a failed paper, an ugly drawing, an incomplete assignment.. in hopes I would make it better later. So I just got rid of those and accepted that they might’ve being mistakes but I don’t need to carry them around as punishment. I still keep my trinkets but lately I’ve been giving some to my cousins, after seeing my youngest cousin come into my room and tell me she always likes coming here because she feels surrounded by pretty things. There’s also this concept of Swedish death cleaning about thinking not only on the environment but the physical and emotional load of the things you leave behind that your family has to carry around and declutter after you’re gone. It also made me more aware of my responsibility with my clutter and how if anything happened to me I wouldn’t want my family to have to deal with it. Also I’m not old but I’ve gotten to an age where I like passing down things.

@ thanks! Yes, the topic of Swedish death cleaning can be grim but it’s very interesting. Seeing some videos here on KZbin made me realize family members tend to keep photos and useful/practical stuff the most. A lot of the things we have are valuable only to us, so I thought if I’m not using it or is actively in my life (decorating for example) then I should give it to someone who will use it, otherwise someone else will have to do the mental load of dealing with its value. I think the tendency to collect is a very human thing, so everyone goes through this. I’m glad we live in a time where people share this, thank you for your video.

I love trinkets! But of the things I collect, I don't choose anything I can't touch or move regularly (no display cases or keeping in packaging), nothing expensive, and thrifted/secondhand if possible. Some collections have been almost entirely gifted to me (my dad buys me a new Funko every Christmas), and others are things I stumble upon (like antiques). But I try to never buy something that I think I won't want to see every day.

I've never had a permanent home, so decorating it with things (trinkets and more) has felt troublesome. Also, my mom doesn't like disorganization, I can definitely see her seeing trinkets as a mess. So I've just avoided it all for a long time, but I'm looking forward to collecting my own things

I love trinkets! But it can definitely get overwhelming if the placement of said trinkets are cluttered. I always think of how I will display it in a specific space to avoid that “cluttered trash” look. ALSO keeping everything clean and dust free! Nothing grosses me out more to when trinkets have a layer of dust on them… 😅

i loved the art so much 😍😍 and your mothers place 🥺 most of my trinkets (postcards, journals, even the one music box i own) are incredibly personal to me and represents moments and people i love. i would say im overtly conscious about overconsumption but ill never stop myself of being surrounded of things that remind me of my humanity - that being said, send me a postcard !

I’ve always had lots of stuff, and always organised it fairly chaotically. Recently, despite never enjoying the aesthetics of minimalism, ive had a real urge to just have less stuff. Simplify. I feel that simplification is the antidote to overwhelm. But… I still love trinkets! The way that I’m balancing this is I’ve set myself a no throwing stuff away rule. I hate hate hate throwing stuff away but people kept telling me I needed to, to get rid of clutter. But after trying to throw more stuff away I realised there’s a third option, of course. Making sure that if im getting rid of something I know that it’ll be used or valued by someone else. Which lead me to a discovery. I’ve found that this actually gives me the same satisfaction that gathering trinkets does, possibly even more! I reckon that there is something about the active engagement with the trinket that makes us happy - whether it’s seeing it come into our life or go into someone else’s. Geocaching is a fantastic way to do this : ) So then, with trinkets that I keep, I make sure to keep interacting with them in some way - moving them around my room every so often, giving them a dust, re arranging them to find nice combos. Keeping decorative stuff somewhat separate to working stuff (pointed look at my younger self, who had a phase where I would scatter rose petals over things I used weekly?? Why did I think that was a good idea?)

great video! my old manager used to design beer bottle labels and he was like “i was literally designing garbage. people were going to throw away my stuff even if it was the most beautiful thing in the world.” and that’s! wild! this might be reading into things too much haha, but i think we’re also in a time where a lot of people don’t get to *own* things, or the default is to just be borrowing or licensing them, from software to houses to movies to music, and having actual physical things that you saw in the world and got to bring into your space and keep there is really special. we just canceled our spotify premium account so i’ve been listening to our record collection whenever i want music and that just feels! so good haha.

Oh my, as someone who have too much of interest, I'm quite in the middle, I think. Also, I'm a doll collector mainly (Barbie scale) but my collection is so far considered little. I do sell some of my collection back then because sometimes having too much made me a bit overwhelmed. Nowadays I branch to small dolls so I can put one trinket in my bag lol. Another trinket I own are cd albums. I kinda want 2000s cellphones too but my brain sometimes loves to guilt-trip me lol :')

i collect postcards! doesn't matter if i've been somewhere, if someone has sent it to me or gotten it for me, if i got it for myself during a trip, if i found it in a thrift store! i love my postcard collection! i have a few enamel & button pins i collect, but my postcards are my pride! i display some of them on my walls! i am beginning a vinyl collection but limiting it to albums & artists I will listen to often. i do not have a record player yet but this way i'll have things to play on it once i do! i am saving to get a quality record player from audiotechnica :) but i also have many CDs now too... i am weak to a little figurine but my requirement is it can't be related to a piece of media or a media franchise i just want a little guy who exists to b a little guy
