It's one of those odd things that confuse me when people claim its sexist. Ships are large powerful objects trusted to keep people safe, same with large machines, they are large objects designed to do the work of many people. By demonising them we are basically saying these are feminine traits, and not one of those traits is negative. If it is sexist, its sexist against men anything.

My aging beloved is a she. But no female could ever be as loyal and accepting of me as my vintage beloved. We started our long ride together back in September 1996. She had 11 miles on the odometer. I never dreamed I would keep a vehicle this long, much less a basic Jeep. No power seats, no power windows, in fact, no real windows, no traction control except a 4x4 lever, no antilock brakes, no roll mitigation, no electronic stability control, no park assist, no cameras, no reactive headlights that point in direction you are steering, no ugly fade prone composite headlights, no heated seats, no reactive cruise control, no power door locks, no key FOB, no GPS navigation, no satellite radio, no copilot to take away my full control, no touch screen, no tablet, no Internet, no driving computer, no variable engine displacement, no variable valve timing, no automatic transmission, CVT, or dual clutch transmission, no weak independent suspension, no anything modern except electronic spark control. I believe this is why, "she," just turned 400,000 miles and 23 years with me. I love my dear, "Windi," so much.

I think it's also an affection thing. You put ages of time and effort into putting a ship together, and they're your home once you're at sea, so you can't help but grow fond of your vessel. And when men think of affection, what comes to mind is likely their mothers or wives. I've often heard the saying "Treat her like the lady she is, and she'll always bring you home."

2:22 Also, if the name of the ship bears someone's name, the person christening the ship is a direct descendant of that person. Hence the Queen of England christened the Queen Elizabeth while the Duchess of Cornwall christened the Prince of Wales. There are special traditions that allow others to do it if someone is unable, unwilling, or the lineage is dead.

Anders Mostue: In ancient times (stone age and early bronze age), ships/boats or models thereof were widely used as burial attributes. Great chiefs could be buried in a stone ship. Well, boulders laid out in the pattern of a ship. The ship/boat would ferry the soul the the next world, and nature and natural/biological phenomenons were commonly thought of as feminine. There have been some speculations (sorry, I have no sources on this one), that the coffin derived from the burial ship/boat.

@@IstasPumaNevada if you go into a topic looking to find evil, evil you will find. Not because the evil was always there, but because of a funny little thing in the human brain called "confirmation bias." Yes, language and society _do_ share a reciprocal interaction, and yes, there _are_ turns of phrase and quirks of language that _should_ be eliminated. Ships being called "she" is not one of them - it really is just sailors putting some affection into their ships like how little kids say their stuffies are whatever gender the stuffy gets assigned. If you're worried about it that much, encourage more male or nonbinary ships instead of ripping what life you can out of things because "oh my god they called it a woman." I'm gonna make a bet that you're the kind of idiot that proselytizes in favor of "latinx" despite every latino and latina hating that word and it not working in the language's phonotactics in the slightest

Always wondered this. To be honest I always just surmised that for centuries traditionally it was only men at sea who never saw women so developed their own habit of calling their vessel a female, and also that notion of a ship that had to protect you like a mother but part of being a sailor is also you taking care of the ship, again, like you would a mother. I'm a twenty-year USN sailor. There is an interesting exception to the general rule of sailors referring to a ship as "She." The captain (Commanding Officer) would almost always refer to another ship as "He." With sailors, in my opinion, the "Feminine" virtues of nurturing, protecting, what have you, are virtues we want in our ship. If your ship is an asshole, your time aboard will be horrible. As for ships and navigation growing beyond superstition, I profoundly disagree. Sailors today are still very superstitious, though some details have no doubt changed. In the case of the captain, he or she is referring to the other captain, not to the ship. Now, many ships are commanded by women. I would guess if a Captain knew the CO of another ship was female, they would use the female pronouns.

In czech: Ship - she Vessel - it Boat - he Submarine - she Yacht - she Barge - he Airplane, helicopter - it/she Rocket - she Missile - she Considering that Czech and Russian are both Slavic languages, theres probably no reason why any of these things is masculine, feminine or neutrum. But the English language doesn't have gendered nouns and they still see ships as female. German has gendered nouns and (most) nouns describing these vessels are neutral: Ship - it Boat - it Submarine - it Airplane - it Still as soon as you are referring to a specific ship, it is called a 'she'.

Weesel71 I would say NYET, to be honest xD In English, “missile” is not just an object, in fact it is a category of objects launched or thrown to harm other people and their equipment. Arrow, javelin, even stone qualify as missiles. Rocket becomes a missile if you add a warhead on top it. Thing is, that isn’t the case in Russian language, here that rocket with a warhead remains being just rocket. You know the term ICBM, right? In Russian we actually call the thing «МБР», or “ICBR”. So it’s safe to say we don’t have direct counterpart the word “ missile” in Russian. «Снаряд» isn’t that. Etymologically speaking, «снаряд» is a thing prepared in order to be used for something. Not necessarily thrown, not necessarily to destroy something. As military term, these days it is usually used in artillery for shells or shots, it is a projectile which is supposed to be launched through a barrel of at least 20mm caliber. There are exceptions, but they’re all coming from the days when rocketry was a branch of artillery and these terms are mostly abandoned now. There is also civilian usage of the word “снаряд”, one is for sports equipment, an the object which sportsman mainly uses and it isn’t necessarily thrown: we do qualify javelin as “снаряд” if we are talking sports, but we don’t qualify an arrow, actually that will be a bow, and it also includes all of the things like pommel horses, punching bags, even wall bars. And finally that word applies to a sets of equipment or tools like set of various minnow spoons for fishing, or technological assemblies, some kind of module, think of “drilling module”, that can be translated as «буровой снаряд». Back to that ICBM case, the warhead can be called as «снаряд», because that’s the thing which is prepared to explode, not entire missile.

I always thought of it as personifying the ship and its crew, like its a living, breathing thing, and I like keeping it because it helps sailors grow attachment to their vessels, like cars. Its also why the same doesnt happen to planes, because most commercial or military pilots change planes even if its the same aircraft type. Fighter pilots don't own their plane, and very often switch depending on where they are.

But both men and women deserve respect, and human/social connection. Even if you stick to the positive connotations for women, it has negative connotations for men. Sexism is harmful to everyone.

Only captain Lindemann wanted it that way. Everyone else says "die Bismarck" and not "der Bismarck".

I was always under the impression sailors referred to ships as female because it was their way of personalizing the ship. It made them feel less like the ship was a thing and more like its own distinct being. Also due to most sailors being men in the past, I have a suspicion that it was their way to feel like they were in the company of a woman while at sea. Interestingly, at least in the 30's and 40's the Kreigsmarine referred to certain ships as male. Bismark, Tirpitz and I THINK (feel free to correct me here) Scharnhorst were all referred to as He or Him by their crews.

I work on the railways, and locomotives are also referred to as "she" - I suppose for the same reason. However, whole trains are generally "he" - no idea where that came from. And most people consider their cars to be a "she" - but all my cars have been boys - since I'm a girl, LOL.

I imagine that we may perceive vehicles subconsciously as having some sort of relationship with the pilot or driver for whatever reason. Therefore we may assign the gender we are comfortable with. Which makes me think of a good rule of thumb with vehicles and their gender. When in doubt, ask the person in charge. Whether that be the Captain, pilot, or driver. Whatever they say goes.

@@Blackwind_Legacy If it were a healthy mix, and for a particular vehicle everyone went by what the captain/pilot/driver/etc. said, then it wouldn't really be a problem at all.

@@IstasPumaNevada literally nobody is preventing a captain from using other pronouns, though its considered by many to be bad luck to call a ship he since a famous ship the Bismark was called he right before it was destroyed

That's what I always assumed. There was a time when all sailors were pretty much male and the references to their vessels was merely ab affectionate coping technique to remain grounded. TY.

Very gentle hommage from an English sailor to the French liner "Île de France" which rescued a number of other ships during its (sorry, her) career so that her surname was "St Bernard des mers". Merci ;)
