I'm a building design student and this was really well explained and informative. It gave me a visual of the things I was learning but couldn't picture. Thank you.

I'm reading a relatively verbose textbook mentioning 'use of wood stud shear walls and plywood sheathing to provide resistance against lateral loading". I could understand what each of those things was independently (wood studs, plywood sheathing, resistance, lateral loads) but now I understand how they work together. No Diagram. This was a great video, great explanation. You've made this so clear and understandable.

I'm not an engineer or architect, but the collapse of Champlain tower has piqued my interest in shear walls and what they do. I want to thank you for the simple, clear explanation you have given regarding what a shearwall is and why it is needed and also for the visual aid.

This made me feel really good about the house that we have just built. We paid extra to have extra plywood wrapped about the whole exterior. I guess every exterior wall is a shearwall. We have shearwalls inside as well. We live in California by the way.

Dean two questions: Shouldn't every exterior wall be a shear wall? What consideration (if any) should be applied to walls that contain garage doors?

The entire house is sheathed with plywood. Is That a shear wall? I know that it doesn’t have the nailing pattern or hold down but do you need the diagonal brace in this case?

I have a 1900 Queen Anne and I have a small bathroom with a large walk-in closent next to it in the hallway on the 2nd floor. I removed the plaster and lath boards to just finding a typical frame without the angled board as you showed at the end of the video. So if my wall does not show any angled support beam, it will be okay to remove? This wall is 4' from the 1st main support structure inside the home (basement) and the other direction the floor joist go 8' to the exterior support. I have no idea if that makes any sense to you. I wish that I could show you images.
