I run because I can. According to my medical file, I should be using crutches (at best). That being said, I'm slow, but I don't mind. PRs are not my thing. Finishing what I started is. Every time I cross a finish line, it's a victory and it's very rewarding.

Great video! I started running (as part of my lifestyle) about 5 years ago give or take a year or two. I’ve battled anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem for as long as I can remember. (Insert difficult childhood story here 😬). But it was about 5 years ago when I had my first actual panic attack and essentially became a hermit for about a year. I started running regularly to try and combat this new mental/social struggle. I haven’t stopped since. I give God all the glory for being able to come as far as I have - I believe He gave me running as a tool to bring me back from my isolation. And your KZbin channel was the first one I found, Sage, that really engaged me and helped me in pursuit of my new goals. So thank you 😊

I run for the personal challenge, to push myself beyond what I ever thought I was capable of. I also run because there is so much beauty to see in the world, and what better way to experience it than up close and personal. I started with a goal to do a half marathon - I have done six and I'm running my first full in February. My long term goal is the Leadville 100. I want to see it and feel it. What an amazing community of people you've managed to assemble through your videos, Sage. I'll come to this video and read the comments on my bad days. Inspiring stuff. Good luck on your pursuit of the OTQ at Houston 2020.

I really appreciate how you realize that not everyone is a full-time runner and time-wise is not able to run all day. Some people keep saying how easy it is to just go out and get the miles in, you just have to want it enough, but hey, I'm a student and some days I get out of the school at 5PM, so no, I can not run whenever I want. I'm thankful for every second spent running though, because it's more precious to me. Thanks for admitting this! Loved the video.

It gives me the feeling of being healthy after being ill, diagnosed with tumor in 2012, and couldn't walk even 10 meters without some assistance. Now at age 58, I run a half marathon on January this year at 1:45. It is a great feeling being healthy after illness and I can run this long distance. Running gives me meaning to my life more than anything else I did. Being healthy and able to run is my ultimate goal in life. Also if my run motivate people to run, I would be happy too.

Started running to join the military. And then I realized how unknowledgeable I was on how to live a healthy life. For many months, I just couldn't get myself to run faster than a 24:40 5k. Almost a year later I ran a 22:59, and now I'm struggling again at a 24:40. It definitely has its ups and downs, and truly is challenging because I have failed about a dozen races by now. And only 2 races were a true victory for me in these last 17 months. 2 days ago my recruiter more or less asked me to consider giving up, because it was taking me so long to reach my goal of running a sub 21:00 5k. But I feel like something inside of me is finally clicking these last few weeks. As a new runner, I had to try all sorts of workouts before finding a routine that actually made me run faster. This took me an entire year to do. And now it seems like I am beginning to understand the sport better, and why I couldn't run any faster despite putting in the miles every single week. So even if I don't make it for selection boards this season, I think I will give it another final shot for next season before seriously considering giving up.

Thanks so much Sage and for me the decision to continue running is an easy one. Quite frankly I'm at the age that should I ever stop my physical ability, health, etc., could go downhill extremely quickly at which time I may be forced into a sedentary lifestyle. Running not only is a joy but the benefits help me enjoy life and health in so many other ways. As I state often, "Old age may win, but I'm going down fighting". Thanks to you and Sandi for your teaching, your encouragement, and your excellent examples of character.

Hi Sage, Thanks for the effort you take in making these videos, they have been a huge help in some technical aspects but also as motivation. I am no natural runner, did a 5K in Copenhagen while smoking in the early 2000, moving to Queensland Australia (don't do it folk, man it's hot) I started running a couple of years after i lost both my brothers in 2010, to get healthier, fitter and probably try to get control back into my life. I ran a marathon in 2014 (5:48, a looong day in the office) while playing with a plant based diet. Was going to run the next this August with a friend whom I sort of talked into taking up running a marathon but 4 months ago I got a bad groin injury and I haven't run since. I think it's time to get back on the horse and start training again sloooowly. I am turning 49 in a couple of months and would like to run another marathon around my 50th, hopefully a bit faster than my first. I quiet like the solitude when out on the road and feeling that feeling of getting stronger and fitter. These days I am 98% plantbased and I think that aids in healing faster. Thanks for listening Peace Carsten

What motivates me to race is the thrill of competition. Being able to test your grit against others on the same course and same weather conditions. But the most important and intimidating competitor is not the guy or gal that looks like an Olympic runner. But yourself. Your own mind and body. Being able to push yourself to the limit and see what you have on that day. Good or bad race, you learn what you can do better in training. Mentally and physically. What motivates me race is to beat myself and any self doubts. If you end up winning the race. That's just icing on the cake!

It's my happy place. I was always very active so this is nothing new to me but soo appreciated because it'd like my exhaust pipe. Humans need to move their bodies and if that need is not fulfilled they compensate that with other stimuli. I am so glad that running is my addiction and that I got into it at an early stage in my life (ran my first half marathon when I was 14). I am a 21 yo marathoner now (pb was 4:28:30, wannabe sub 4h now) and you can only imagine the looks I get from my peers when I tell them that I run/train for fun. IDGAF though. I would do this any day than become the stereotypical hungover and confused 21 year old. People like you are a such a relief to listen to because literally NOBODY around me is into "healthy stuff" as they call it. The worst part about it, my parents support me but will not take care of their own health despite my best efforts. Blessed be Strava and KZbin. Anyway, great video, good luck with everything Sage! You are awesome!

Training has been pretty tough lately. I'd be lying if I said that it hasn't been taking its toll, both mentally and physically. But just as you say, the essence of running is striving to be the best version of yourself with what you have, and being thankful for the opportunity to do that. Life certainly does have its ups and downs, and I suppose at the end of the day, really the hardest and most important thing to do is not give up. So what motivates me to run? Today it's you Sage. You are my biggest inspiration.

I tried to start running for years, but it always ended in injury in just a short time. One of those times was when I decided to run an inaugural 5k in the city where we just settled. I started "training" by running as fast as I could for a couple of miles, but after a couple of days I gave up due to the pain. When year three of that race rolled around, I thought I would give it another try. I ran through a park near where we had recently moved and did the same old thing. I ran as hard as I could. I was on the verge of giving up again when I saw an older gentleman float past me at a nice easy, and much faster, pace with a smile on his face. I realized then I was doing something wrong and a quick Google search on "how do I run" led me to coach Sandy's youtube channel (Running Wild) where coach Sage was a special guest. I quickly figured out I was doing everything wrong. Coach Sandy and Coach Sage have changed my life by not only getting me through that 5k but turning me on to trail running. I have worked up, and through, a couple of 25k trail races, and I'm currently training for my first trail ultra. Why do I run? I run because I can and so many can't. Thank you, Sage and Sandy!

Really enjoyed listening to this video. My initial motivation was to be physically fit as I get into my 50's and beyond. That was about ten years ago and I still get in miles every other days - only 4-10 miles a run, with a half marathon thrown in occasionally. Running is only just a part of my total fitness along w/ swimming, yoga, lifting, HIIT training. Sage, don't apologize for what you do as a runner -- you've sacrificed another career to do what you're doing. Nothing to apologize for.

Down 70 lbs and after 23 months, running is the most enjoyable activity I've ever done and it can be done virtually anywhere. At 50 and being a newer runner, it is also great to be constantly improving at something. I'm really looking forward to my 50's and am so thankful for the health I now have.

Having run for 50 of my 65 years, the joy it brings to me still feels like privelige. When I took my place in Wave 2, corral 7 last week it felt like the center of the universe. And when I can complete another Boston Marathon, each year faster than the last, I know I'm doing what I was designed for. The neat thing is I can get a bit of that feeling with each training run, each race I participate in.

I want to be a Texas State Trooper. Competition is tough. The test is 1.5 mile in 11:00 minimum. And that is minimum, if you want to be considered you need to do it in 10:00 or less. That may be cake for some of you but I only recently started running and want to become alot better. I can do that in 11:15 right now. Everyday I dont train, theres someone else training somewhere for the same job that I want. I would have never guessed that running was so technical and tough. Running and sprinting are a good way to keep your cardio up. Roadwork is what make top athletes even better!

I have experienced many disappointments in my life. These disappointments have ranged from my childhood into my current adult life. I quit my job 6 years ago to start a business. Fast forward and my business is failing. I don't know that I can classify myself as being depressed. If I was truly depressed I wouldn't get out of bed. Despite all the setbacks in my life I still know that I have my physical health. I run almost everyday averaging about 40 to 60 miles a week and have run for more than 25 years. There have been times I thought about suicide because of how things are in my life. The one thing that keeps me from that is looking forward to my run the next day. So maybe in some ways running has saved my life. Just like you said Sage, running is hard. I have bad runs. But I also have great runs. Those bad runs always make me appreciate more those days that I have great runs. There are days running 13 or 14 miles feels easier than the bad days where getting through the first 1 or 2 miles feels insurmountable. Regardless even on bad days I finish my run with all the cobwebs cleared out of my head. I have a fresh perspective on life. I think there is something to be said about running that takes us all back to a more primordial time of our existence-a time when we did not have all the artificially created stresses we are now unfortunately so encumbered with. There was a time when running truly was a matter of life or death. Our survival depended on running. We are all descended from hunter/gatherers and running was just a normal part of life back then. Avoiding predators was a part of that equation. I guess maybe on some deep primitive level running reminds me of what is truly important. Survival and having the vitality to survive. Running gives me vitality. It makes me realize if I have vitality and health that all these superficial worries-like my failing business-are just that. Superficial. Running gives me health. My health is and always will be my true wealth. In that way running gives me hope.

It's just a big experiment to witness the magic of endurance, strength and speed improvements. It's fun to be able to see improvement, even if it's just a recovery to prior running abilities after some injury. It's fun to figure out how to overcome the inevitable aches and pains of the sport, and intelligently train to avoid those injuries in the future. And as a 72 year old runner, it's fun to know that running will help me believe that I will even have a future!

I agree. I can justify various aspects of running, but the actual work of running is often just uncomfortable warming up, followed by a brief period of effortless flow and mind wandering, and finished with a mental battle to achieve some arbitrary goal I had set up prior to the run - hard work. I reward myself with a 10 minute walk break and polish it off with a high cadence stride to convince my brain that the previous work was just an EZ run. I don't want the newcomers to get the impression that they are doing something wrong when they feel how difficult it can be. But, as endurance improves, that sense of flow, that 'wild animal running free' experience gets extended, and it gets easier.

I run because: 1) health reasons: allows me to stay in shape. 2) hedonistic reasons: allows me to eat more. 3) fulfillment through self-overcoming: test my limits and overcome them in the physical realm. 4) experiential reasons: allows me to live life in ways that non-runners can't (marathons, Boston, WMM, run-cations).

Great video and sir you are humble! I am a ‘hobby runner’ balancing work and family. I run for health and piece of mind. I run races (5k, 10k & 1/2 marathon) only 2 or 3 times per year, to be competitive against myself to see my end training results. I am above average fast for my age (42) but not the fastest and I am content I will never podium; my success is doing the best I can. Anyway, great advice and words sir👌🏽

I run to stay healthy, compete in races, and I love to eat (sushi, Indian, Chinese, Filipino, Thai, pizza, bubble tea, noodles, dim sum, etc etc..). Running helps maintain the weight. Close to race day, it adds motivation to eat healthy and lose weight.

no 1 reason is that I like running a lot. When I started I didn't enjoy it. I just wanted to achieve a certain time in marathon. Later on I started to like running. This week for example the weather has been amazing. Sunny and no wind. So it has been absolutely amazing to go out in the evening for a run when everything looks so beautiful. Training in bad conditions in rain, dark, cold or on a treadmill is kind of the hard work needed to be able to be in a good shape to enjoy running when it's nice or when I want to race.

Sage, or anyone else knowledgeable, I am in a very very hard spot in running and am looking for advice. I am in pieces mentally right now. Long story short the tracker I had been using for the past 4 1/2 months has turned out to have been faulty, giving me complete bogus pacing, distance and speed data for almost my entire time training and only due to recent, actual timed races have I been able to see how wrong it has been. In concrete, I had been running for just over an hour and been regularly been measuring over 6 miles per run at a rough 10 / 930 pace for a while. I was happy with this time and thought to slowly improve it. I recently got Strava due to peer pressure from friends, and used its native tracking option, which gave me a revelation that has honestly just killed my willpower and has made me realized that i have big time screwed up my future Fire Season. Basically the "6.2" miles my tracker had been recording on this route was completely bogus, I was, in fact, barely reaching 4.8 and at a 12 minute per mile pace. We are talking absolute trash tier numbers for a healthy young individual which I supposedly am. I corroborated the data with a third party measuring tool to find out that indeed, the Strava data was right, and the tracker I had been blindfully trusting for so long has given me nothing but garbage data and false hopes for this entire year. To say i'm devastated is to understate things tremendously as there is a certain minimal standard I have to reach running wise for work and I thought I had gotten close it. Turns out I am at least a YEAR of consistent training just to get to the point of where I thought I was and that I just plain haven't achieved anything in 6 months of what to me was hard hard work. What can I do? It's already too late to have lasting impact now, as work starts in 8 days. Has anyone else ever had a revelation that they had screwed up, and screwed up TREMENDOUSLY in their training program?

Do some interval work to boost speed tolerance. Your slow running was probably GOOD for your endurance development, tho not good for your ego. Do run walk training: 4 minutes running, 1 minute (or less) walking, and you will be surprised at how fast you can run. Oh, one more thing, try to run with an empty stomach. Wait at least 2 hours after eating. Somehow, food in your stomach and upper intestines makes a run more exhausting.

Hi sage my running is strange story but my brother was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer at 45 years old and we had taken him on trip when on the trip I received a call asking me if I would take a leg in the Colfax marathon relay. I was 47 at the time not a runner but I was on the beach filling like I had the world by the hand said sure I can do a leg . When returned to colorado I had 3 weeks to train for my leg I hadn't run since I was 19 years old . The first training day put fear into me I couldn't run at all but set little goals I run this long then walk then run in the the end I said I would run from bronco stadium to the road that turns to slogans lake then walk that and then run half way around slogans then walk then run it all the rest of the way to the hand off well it kinda went like that I thought I was going to die and I got planterfasitis that took almost a year to recover from that was 2017 and then in 2018 I did the relay again and then I was hooked ! My life has never been the same My brother past in feb 2019 two days later I ran my first half marathon ! A few months before my brother past he asked me why running Leslie and I had no answer and maybe still don't but it makes me be able to face life head on it gives me strength I never ever knew I had . It's so good for my mental health . It hurts I'm slow I'm trying so hard to get faster but it's like breathing I feel so amazing after a run no matter how good or how crappie the run was . I'm up to about 20 miles a week and I'm doing the mile high challenge at the colfax this year first time not doing the relay I was tempted to do the half but I decided the urban 10 miler and 5k were what I should do it be probably my last race in my 40s I will turn 50 in June and I have 2 half plan for this year . You inspire me every single day I watch one or more of your videos thank you so much from the bottom of my heart I've learned so much from you and you inspire me to get out there and do my training runs ! Love Hokas changed running for me 100 percent.

Hi Sage, I am a longtime follower and I recently purchased your BM qualifying plan. I am really looking forward to starting it in a couple months! One problem, I have been out for a month with my first horrible case of shin splints. I am wanting to give Hoka a try. What shoe do you recommend for long training runs on mostly pavement and hard Oklahoma red dirt roads? Thanks for all you do!

hey sorry to hear about the shin splints and thanks for your support..I'd do special exercises to deal with those first. Some HOKAs that might be good would include the Clifton or the Bondi (however it is usually best to try them on first and see how you feel and get the proper sizing).
