Its so true. Once you start consistently thrifting, you no longer wish to buy anything new nor do brand new items appeal to you because you find waasay cooler more unique stuff at the thrift store. Every time i try to go shopping i never find anything thats my style but when i go thrifting i immediately find a ton of cool stuff.

Thrift stores used to be so amazing, but now it's hit or miss. I remember when stores had bag days- where you could get as much of a specific item that would fit in a bag for a flat price. My mom would spend hours rolling clothes up so small so she could fit as much as possible in the bag. I miss those days. Thrifting is still fun, though!

Thrifting in a low income area can be rough, but I do my best to thrift as much as I can. Unfortunately because so much of my local area has historically (and continuously) experienced very low ses, our thrift stores are primarily filled with actual garbage rather than good items. We also have a huge problem with people picking through the stores as a full time job, buying anything of value, and then flipping it for double the price.

I thrift because I can change my entire wardrobe for cheap (I got a closet’s worth of business casual clothing for my new job for just over $200), and also because anything in stores is cheaply produced and made mostly from plastic. Even if the environment/sustainability isn’t a priority for you (no judgment here; not everyone has the time to bother with that when you’re living paycheck to paycheck), clothing made from real materials rather than plastic just LAST LONGER. The quality difference is insane.

For example, I found picture frames with a dollar store $1.25 price tag and the thriftstore price was $4. And a tshirt that was really quite beat up listed at $24.99. I have started thrifting for clothing as i started getting in shape and gaining healthy weight to my body, so I donated the clothes that didnt fit me and set about buying thrifted clothes that did. I have saved so much money getting good quality second hand clothing and mix and match pieces. I didnt want to buy fast fashion as its horrendously bad for waste and the quality is low. Plus homewear is a steal, I found blackout curtains for my office for £5 when they usually cost upwards of £35. I found big chunky glass candle sticks for my fireplace for £2 a pair and they still had the original price on them £12 each 😮 Never again will I go for a regular store first, thrift shops will always be the first port of call

For whatever reason, thrift stores tend to be much more sensory-friendly than big box stores. I don't know if it's the smaller size, better soundproofing, or strictly delineated sections, but I can spend hours in a thrift store even if I can't go that long in a regular store without some kind of sensory aid (like headphones)

Most of what I own has been thrifted - gorgeous lined wool coats, leather bags, unique art, boots, English tableware, silverware - and my house feels like "me", not like a Pinterest page. Also, thrifting is the best for barware - cheap vintage or interesting glassware in abundance! Our (thrifted) 70s bar has almost exclusively thrifted glassware all costing like 50 cents a glass

Am in NZ and agree with your thoughts and a lot of those expressed in the comments. We are also seeing changes in pricing and their are teirs of store pricing: vintage or consignment clothes - expensive. Overcharging charity shops that operate on a more commercial model. Old school charity shops that charge reasonably and are great for bargains. It depends on the charity, the location, and the store manager for the kind of goods they stock and their pricing. To really bargain shop you have to know the market, target preferred stores and be willing to travel. But our stores are mostly much smaller than those you show and I think it would be overwhelming and I would overbuy if the stores here were like that.

I was about to snag this amazing vintage couch, it had a gorgeous wooden frame it was large too, could easily sit 3 or 4 people, just needed new cushions, it was $20 at goodwill but someone had already bought it. The fact that people will go to ikea and buy lesser quality items and pay 10x or even 20x more is crazy. No wonder the average american is broke, people live to consume here and its disgusting to watch.
