Just search "why do you want to become a doctor?" and you'll get videos about "why medicine is not worth it", "why I decided not to pursue medicine", and "how miserable the life of a doctor is". Can you imagine how overwhelmed and anxious a premed will become seeing those? I don't even want to start talking about the issue with the shortage of doctors... So thank you sooo much for creating this video! Videos like this are very much needed so premeds can see both sides and decide for themselves.

So true. I finish high school this May and I keep having doubts but I feel that if you can't stop thinking about something, then you should give yourself a chance to at least see for yourself. So I'm going to do it and I think you should too. It'd be nice to hear what decision you'll make or have made.

These kinds of videos really amplify my desire to pursue medicine. Each person in the video is a great human being and inspiring in their own way. You can tell they're speaking from the heart and want to do good for other people. I just think it would be incredible to learn and grow alongside people like this. Another great video!

Your first reason for becoming a doctor shouldn't be because of money. Going into medicine with that mindset is exactly why you shouldn't be a doctor. Two just know it's for you, ask yourself if you are up for the years of school and if you have the mental capability to become one.

Don’t go into it for money. 4 years of undergrad, 4 years of Med school, 3-6 years of residency and then you earn money. If you want to make money there are more effective ways to do it. And with money being your main goal you won’t be able to make it through Med school. Try and become a doctor if you want to dedicate your life to helping others

Being a doctor is a terrible financial decision. 8 years of not making a salary from going to school, getting paid minimum wage for another 3-7 years while working 60-80 hours a week, $250,000+ of student debt. Also, once you start making a full attending salary, don't forget you have 5-10 years of interest from the 250K you pulled for school. Yes, you start making over $170,000 a year, but that puts you in a higher tax bracket...so on and so forth

There needs to be a bit more genuineness and honesty in the replies imho. I am hoping to get into medicine. In Australia 9/10 top paying professions are doctors of one kind or another. And its male dominanted in Australia. We have doctors moving from asian countries, south aftica, england, wales, ireland etc to come to Australia PURELY for the money. Ie a doctor in south africa makes 60k a year, the same doctor doing identical thing makes 180 k in Australia. Anyone telling you money is not an incentive in Australia is not being an honest person. Would they be a doctor if there was no salary? Or if the salary was paid less than a waitress? No they wouldnt. So lets stop kidding ourselves. However in countries like the UK and like S africa where the salary of a doctor is 60-100 k, thats not a lot of money for their qualification. And there are a lot of hours working as a doctor. So per hour in those countries the pay is low. These people would make more as lawyers, engineers or working in banking. The comments about the large student debt; pets talk about that for a minute because the person made it sound like doctors are marryrs loading themselves into debt to do good for others. Make no mistake most, 80-95% of doctors are from a privileged background. Well off families. Good families. Healthy supoort. Money. A lot of atudents families pay off their doctor student fees. There are plenty of studies on the students studying medicine and most are privileged society. There are also plenty of avenues to work rural or remote areas and get incentives from govt to pay off your student loans while you work. You dont see a lot of lower socioeconomic status people becoming doctors because getting a really good education and good school grades; a lot of privileged people take that totally for granted they dont realise its not jormal to grow up going to a private school for 20k a year and do all these extra cirricular activities and have 3 meals a day, and get a car when they turn 18 from their parents and get an inheritance etc.... people born into privilege often font realise how privileged they are, many become doctors. But we want smart people as doctors. We want intelligent people hard working that make decisions most of the time because this impacts other peoples health. In america doctors are paid even more than in Australia. In Australia Doctors get home loans and they dont have to have a deposit because their job is so secure. Did you know in Australia every single med student that finishes uni is guaranteed an internship at a hospital thats paid 65-80 k a year plus over time. Not many uni jobs out there with guaranteed jobs for every single student in the country, is there? The hecs fees in oz to finish a 4 year doctorate depends if your place is supoorted by govt or full fee paying, or if you are an international student. If international the cost is 250k odd. If you are a domestic student on a govt supoorted place (most Australian are) then the cost per year depends on the uni. But its about 10-15 k a year or 40-60 k for the medicine degree. But you meed to also pay a 3 year bachelor, which is another 25 K, so all up say 65-85 k. Not 250 k unless you are an international student full fee paying. But then its the parents paying those fees, not the student. And we get back to privileged being able to study medicine. Thats a good dose of realism Yes its absolutley about money, there is an aspect of money. But most jobs are. I worked in IT and it was paid well, very well, as much as doctors. And some people were paid 500 k a year with no degree. A doctor has spent a min 7 years at uni. There is generally a trade off the more years education the higher the salary. Thats why economists say education is a great long term investment as it increases your average salary. Its why people get mbas; or one of the reasons. More money and they want leadership roles. What other profession allows you to operate on people, to save their lives, to make a genuine difference in ones life in terms of their health decisions? You can cut a tumour out and the cancer regresses. You can use technology and other tools to work out the complexities of what is wrong with someone. You get to help the unfortunate children who arent as lucky as others and get sick. I just sat a evening uni class; the lecturer is a doctor, doing his registrar at a country hospital in Australia. He just finished a 12 hour day shift. Started at 6. Ran a uni class 6-8, he is getting a bite to eat then doing a 12 hour evening shift at the hospital because the locum didnt show up and its a rural hospitAl. 24 hours straight, and teaching a uni class in between. Thats a hard worker, dedicated, and he was so professional when he taught our class. They definitely earn their salary from what i can see, some of the hardest workers around. Until they get to a consultant level. And thats when they make the really big money charge 500/hr and drop back to 40 hours a week. But its a long road to get to a consultant level
