I wasn't an X person in the time he was alive (I was around 10 and a half when he passed) but I knew of the mugshot and of his popular shit. That's how big the dude was, you couldn't avoid him OR that mugshot. The mugshot took a whole life of its own aswell, such a dark and haunting picture. To me, jail and rap will never separate, its deeply rooted in the culture. It adds interest, lets be real here.

What kept me out of jail was my Uncle Donald. He spent the late 80s all the way up to when I was a Sophomore in high school (2009) locked up because he kept running wild doing dumb shit with the worst kind of degenerates and it caught up with him. I remember drawing him pictures for his cell and I grew up when TCAP, Beyond Scared Straight, and Lockup: RAW were making new episodes. I'm never going to jail or prison unless I am visiting a loved one and it depends heavily on how fucked up the shit they did to get there in first place is.

Mass incarceration is the real issue. Rap itself isn’t the issue. Even if these ppl would’ve chose a diff genre or never partook in music at all there’s a big chance they still would’ve lived basically the same lives. Living in the hood seeing ppl yk in and out of detention centers is common place @ an early age. Rap is a Black dominated genre so it only makes sense that issues that a community faces would show itself in the art they create

It's no secret that rappers aren't exactly smart. I mean, it is a form of music that has the lowest barrier to entry, you don't need to know how to play an instrument, sing, write, etc. So of course even the slow learners are going to be able to be rappers. Some rappers end up being victims of their fanbase too in that, if you rap about being a gang member, your fans might egg you on and claim they like you cause you're "real". You being the rapper in that case might play into that facade of being a gang member and might even go as far as to join a gang, just so you can be authentic. It's why if you look into the back stories of alot of these rappers, they grew up nice, even if they came from poverty or the trenches, but yet they rap about being hard and all that, when in reality they aren't. People like 69 are a prime example of what I'm talking about. EDIT: I iniatially typed this out before finishing the video. What I said ended up being covered, one way or another.
