Not a fan of modern architecture but we need solutions for getting people into their own homes and property. I’m happy to see things like this

Modularization has been the "next big thing" in construction since the end of WWII. Peak modular construction was in the last century. It is absolutely not a 21st century approach and it fundamentally misunderstands the value proposition buildings.

How tall can they actually go? Are they designing for earthquake resistance? How do elevator shafts work in this design? Are they creating modules for ground floor commercial spaces? So many unanswered questions.

In the UK modular housing was used after the war in large quantities. However now its consideredd "non standard construction" and you cant get a morgage against it, as its considered to be hard to repair and maintain

The concept of a container with standard constraints but fully customisable within it is a principle that applies to lots of things beyond architecture like the colourful streets of Amsterdam and other places with variety within conformity. It's what leads to playfulness and beauty. It's what makes a good game, not just The Sims. It's what helps to create happy employees. Follow these rules but do it your way and bring your creativity. Similar for raising children. It's democratic states. It's Yin/Yang. It's everywhere once you see it.

My issue with modular cities, houses, or buildings is that the wealthy elite could potentially own the most scenic spots in the country. Since traditional construction or residences are considered fixed and immovable, the most expensive properties are often located in historically established areas. However, if these structures become movable, nothing would prevent the ultra-elite from acquiring prime locations that should otherwise be reserved for parks, travel destinations, or healing and recreational spaces.

People need beauty and variety in the places they live and work. Otherwise we end up as depressed automatons. How does this solution address that?

Housing should not be used to "create wealth", that's why corporations are buying up all the housing & everyone is LOSING THEIR HOMES! DECOMODIFY HOUSING is the answer, not some crap about how housing is made-has nothing to do with the fact that people can't afford housing.

Isn't part of the problem that a housing shortage is in the interest of those building housing. Market ecomonics.

If you can't move the unit out of a high rise structure, put it on a trailer and to be towed by a pickup truck, or a train, and deploy it in a suburban backyard as an ADU, or on to an empty field as a starter home, and then build a clear span structure on that field and slot the unit in, and visa versa, is it really modular? A truly modular solution necessitates two components, units closely resembling shipping containers, and a multistory structure designed to facilitate the movement of such units into and out of it. Basically a parking garage with a centrally located crane, and the units arrayed outwards around an interior courtyard. Units would be driven directly into the street level of the courtyard and lifted into its assigned level and slot, trailer and all. That structure can then be decorated to fit the local architecture. The units themselves, singularly or bolted together, can serve any purpose from a self storage unit, to a farm, to an office, to a workshop, to a restaurant, to a housing unit. This wide variety of functions encourages municipalities and land owners to overbuild because that real estate can always be used for something productive by someone, though there are bound to be certain functions that work together better than others. The most important feature however, is that the individual units can be owned by individuals. In the urban context, rent is charged by square footage, or perhaps by twenty-foot equivalent units or TEU. The property owner provides electrical, data, power, water, and sewer hookups, but the unit owner pays for these utilities and is free to make whatever alterations to their unit they desire.

This ain't gonna work on tackling the housing crisis, home ownership in the US conditioned by private equity investments and landlords, which rises the pace to provide housing for the proletariat population and widening the social income gap, solutions must be prompted by large scale incentives, subsidies and collaborations where there is an imperative nexus for mixed income households in the places we inhabit, not how we build them.

I love this concept - particularly excited about standardizing the underlying infrastructure so that you could have specialized builders who focus on building shippable rooms. Being able to mix-and-match rooms, like basic bedrooms from Ikea, an artisanal/hand-built chef's kitchen, a "Japandi" primary bathroom, maybe a home office built by like Steelcase + Logitech, all bolted into the standard "Assembly" frame... Super compelling, and hopefully lowers the barrier to entry for not just buying/building housing and other buildings, but also choosing to start a room building company.

Everyone talks about the housing shortage but fails to even mention the fact that this is created by unsustainable population growth targets. Adding more than 2.5 million people per year to the country without any plan to house them or for the infrastructure to support them is what creates this problem. As the very existence of the problem highlights, the market is not addressing the issue. The lack of a government plan results in environmental degradation, an imbalance of supply and demand driving up costs and the housing "shortage". It frequently means that the existing population subsidizes the newcomers. We need government targets to have a feedback mechanism if it is going to play with market forces.
