I went to French Guiana 2 years ago. I found it the most boring country in all of the Americas. The people have a very high minimum wage, yet the place and people seem poor.

Because the European Space Agency built the facilities and this little country does not have the engineering base required to operate a space center of its own (having a total population less than 200,000 people). Let's face it, 99% of us don't have the mind necessary to be a physicist, engineer, or mathematician. In countries with populations in the many millions, that's not so much of a problem. But when you have a tiny population, putting 100 or 200 people with genius minds together towards a task is no easy feat...especially when you consider that not every person with super-intelligence is necessarily going to want to study a career as a scientist.
@omineol98974 жыл бұрын
its not a country its a region of france
@marceloorellana57262 жыл бұрын
Genius minds? Being an engineer or scientist doesn't make you a Genius. And only 200,000 people should be easy for France to educate the people. I mean it's only been 400 years that they've had that colony. Something is wrong there don't you think.

Sorry but who are these modern-day slaves exactly? You insult the memory of those who suffered under the real slave trade in history when you make this kind of sloppy comparison. Modern Guyanese have more control over their situation than you give them credit for.

I had the honor of working on a project in The Netherlands under Dr.'s Oort and van de Hulst. van de Hulst was involved early on in ESRO and ESA but I tend to think the people now working at the space station in Guyana have never heard of him. Oort and van de Hulst were gracious and kind but also highly dedicated to their research and teaching students at The Sterrewacht in Leiden. Let's give them both credit for their early contributions to ESA. Here is a link to a memorial site for van de Hulst, sponsored by his students and friends. www.strw.leidenuniv.nl/vdhulst_e.html

European Space Agency can only have 24.2% of french citizens. so the rest has to be from the other member states it all depends on what percentage a member pays to the agency. that is one reason there are so few local workers. Arianespace SA is in turned only owned 64.10% by french companies.
@ems76232 жыл бұрын
I understand why this is the case. However, this is not necessarily the best way to operate such a high-stakes program. They really ought to be able to hire the best trained people regardless of citizenship.

@jeremytaylor35323 жыл бұрын
I don't see why this super XL Beluga cannot fly the James Webb Telescope to Fr Guinea they would just need to make a lightweight aluminum transport frame / case and add some extra fuel tanks to extend the flight range. Apparently the space port does not have it's own landing strip. However it has multiple straight roads that could easily be paved wider. And a temporary military radar control tower used to allow the beluga XL to land directly. Thereby avoiding all the crappy bridges between the regular airfield and the spaceport. This would be a tremendous upgrade for the spaceport, as the future of space travel lies with reusable rockets and it would give the space port a way to rapidly repatriate these large components.

French Guiana it's practically a colony in my assessment because the bulk of the population which is overwhelmingly black lives in poverty and unemployment while France is benefiting itself exploiting the country's raw materials and making profits with its space program but such profits go to metropolitan France

Do we really need to walk through the thought experiment of what would happen if that launch facility was staffed by a bunch of local jungle tribesmen? They see skilled European workers getting hired and think it's easier for them, but most typical Europeans can't do this work either. It's demanding regardless of your background. Be grateful for the subsidies that keep you afloat.

First of all that’s just offensive! Not every French Guyanese are the same. French Guyanese don’t have the same opportunities and doesn’t receive enough funding for education, healthcare, etc as compared to those in Mainland France. If this doesn’t change, French Guiana may want to get independence in the future and the ESA may have to abandon their launch site; which is a very special site because it’s so close to the equator.
