I've struggled with these verses all my life, and they've crippled my faith at times. I've thought, in despair, that I was not and could not be saved. This answer and this teaching is the most helpful I've heard on these verses. For the first time in a long time, I have a bit of hope. Thank you for your work, Dr. Farley. I believe this ministry is having a beautiful impact in freeing people from bondage to despair and legalism. You are in my prayers.

Thank you, Brother/ Dr. Adrew, In the last couple of days, I was contemplating on James chapter 2, I thank God for the Holy Spirit thought me in a way I have never thought about it before, and although I was absolutely convinced about the new understanding He gave me, just to be sure I went into your web to check if you have said anything about it. And I was so glad when I found you have, for listing to your message has confirmed to me the new understanding I was given by the Spirit of God is in line with God's good news message to set free sinners who cannot be free from in any other way! Here is how I understood James chapter 2. When we begin to read verse 14 which says "What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him"? The confusion, not knowing that the required work I am expected to do is to believe in the savior's name and what He has done to redeem/save me and live in my whole life believing in that! Nothing else. Just as exactly and nicely you explained it by saying "... your response to Jesus at salvation was more than accepting theological facts. You actually opened the door of your life to Christ and offered yourself to God. Now that’s living faith"! This understanding of James 2:14 not only agrees to the gospel messages of the Lord Jesus Himself and all the apostles' message throughout the New Testament, but it is also perfectly in line with all other Biblical truth beginning with Genesis 2:16-17! - What the law of Genesis 2:16-17 required from Adam and Eve was not to eat from the forbidden fruit. - The test to Abraham which James 2:21 is referring to in which he was justified by work was to offer his only son Isaac! - The works Rahab the harlot was justified by which James 2:25 referring to, was her action based on which we read written in Jeshua 2:1-21 - In the very same manner since according to John 3:16-18 the required expected work of the Law of faith to salvation is "to have faith or to believe in Christ Jesus", he/she who believe in Him is justified by work of obedient to believe in Him! I believe this is also true and in line not only with what the Lord Jesus said in John 6:29, but what the apostle Paul also said in Romans 8:2-4.

I was born again in a puddle of My own tears.. the faith in Christ Jesus and his finished works alone and the Great kindness of God, Long suffering and unwavering Love when I was at my worst..God was at his best..The good work's God began in us know that he will finish it.. The works he prepared for us in advance is a Labour of Love fuelled by the generousity of God. I had nothing to do with it.. Salvation and cannot boast about it.. IT was a gift I did nothing...Apart from the surrender accepting his invitation and the Finished work's in Christ Jesus includes sealing the Spirit he sends a helper ❤

Been wrestling with this verse since my Bible college days back in the early 80s. I don’t know of any Bible teacher that resolves so many questions simply by looking at the context in a deeper and proper way. The Archbishop of Canterbury divided the Bible into chapters and verses in 1227AD which often times destroys the natural flow of thought, but I think if there was a Bible that had no chapter/verse divisions, rather simply basic prose as it was ORIGINALLY written, we would not be nearly as confused as we are today with many passages. That’s why Andrew’s textual skill, and grace ministry in general is so incredibly important today more than ever. Dr. Farley is the closest thing to the apostle Paul himself that we have in our lifetime.

@@Paradicted Micheal is attempting to make the Argument that Since the Torah is Jesus made Flesh; then not following the Torah is unforgivable sin, through inserting the Holy Spirit as a substitution of Christ. What he is not grasping is the rest of the argument Paul was making in Romans: that Jesus our Lord who was the Torah made flesh died on the cross. And thus, the law of Moses died on the cross with him. He was resurrected and a new Covenant was born. 40 days later he ascended to Heaven. Later on the day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit was sent as promised. Micheal's presumptions, precept and attempts to conflate are not derived from personal exegeses , but most likely just repeating a clever argument someone thought they came up with to help support a belief that the laws of Moses should still be followed even after the death of them on the cross. Anyone who has read Romans, Hebrews , and most importantly Galatians: will very quickly see this argument is nothing new. It was easily dismantled by the Apostles even in the days of the early Christian church. As summarized in the 15th chapter of Acts by the meeting of the Apostles at The Council of Jerusalem circa 48-50AD. Meaning this type of thing has been going on for roughly 2000 years :)

James is just talking about since we are under the law of liberty, or the spirit and will never be judged or condemned, since we are free and fully forgiven, we have the implanted Word in us the gospel, show mercy to others. Have a profitable faith. How can it save him is talking about saving the poor man in his time of need. It’s useless to not do anything to help someone. Don’t be useless like a demon or a dead body. He is not talking about your vertical relationship with God but your horizontal relationships on earth. Justification by works is Not to prove you are saved but to allow God to use you so that He can prove to others that he wants to save them, love them and be their friend! When we bask in who we are in God’s grace, look intently into the law of liberty, then we will reflect His love through His Faith, to a watching world who needs to see that Jesus still lives and loves them. If you look at this as about your works, your faith, and proving you are a real Christian then you really have a dead faith and are truly missing it. You are still saved if you’re trusting Christ but it’s just religion you are practicing. You will simply miss out on the joy of letting God work in you to show others His love and you will become a miserable legalist always looking at your works instead of the finished works of Christ! Enjoy the gift!!!! Work from REST!

Good explanation. Also noting that in Romans 3:28 Paul was speaking specifically against a reliance on works _of the Law_ versus the faith by which we are justified. James' focus was not on works of the Law, per se, and his point was that good works should evidence and perfect a living faith.

Abram was counted righteous by belief years before Issac.. read it!! The example offered by James is not in Gen as He says! Gen 15:6.. Also I believe James letter was the first letter to the Church and Paul's letters a few years later were so clear about Salvation being a Gift.. there was a little confusion back then.. Acts 14 and 15 shows there was a difference of opinion till All the Apostles convened and concurred about faith in Christ work being accounted for justification/ righteousness. I do like Andrews take on it but I can see why M Luther didn't think it should be ... much confusion amongst the brethren..

I think the key to this is understanding that works according to the Law cannot save you. If one simply follows the Law, then how can you know God? Therefore, only belief in God and doing what He has asked is righteousness. We are saved by grace through faith though what faith do you have if it bears no fruit?

The Word of God plainly teaches that eternal life is the “FREE GIFT” (Romans 5:15) of God. Ephesians 2:8-9 are clear on the matter... Man has no part in God's salvation. When Paul says, “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling” (Philippians 2:12), he did not say to work for God's salvation. Over and over in the Psalms, 26-times, references are made to “Thy Salvation,” that is, God's salvation.......

This is the only time I see you make a mistake here. It's true that Abraham was declared righteous in one moment. But that moment was when he believed God when God told him that he would be blessed with many children and would get a nation and that the whole world would be blessed through him. 'Justified' in James 2 means 'shown'. In another place in the Bible it says 'wisdom is justified by her children'. It doesn't mean that wisdom is declared righteous by her children. It means it's shown. About Abraham.. Romans 4:9-10 says: 9 Is this blessing only for the circumcised, then? Or is it also for the uncircumcised? For we say, Faith was credited to Abraham for righteousness. 10 In what way, then, was it credited - while he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? It was not while he was circumcised, but uncircumcised. -- Romans 4:9-10 (CSB)
@inpursuitoftruth4905 Жыл бұрын
Your Interpretation ignores the chronology of the events in Abraham's life: Gen 15:6 - And he (Abraham) believed in the LORD (for the birth of Isaac which occurred 20 yrs later); and he counted it to him for righteousness. Abraham believed God's promise of a son 30-40 yrs before the offering of Isaac as a sacrifice spoken of in James 2:21. Gen 22:10 Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to kill his son. There is a 30-40 yr gap between Gen 15 and Gen 22. Abraham' faith started at age of 75 (Gen 12) not when he offered Isaac as a sacrifice. God telling him to offer Isaac as a sacrifice was a test to see if his faith was strong enough to be obedient to the what God told him to do. It was a test of the faith he already had and was walking in for more than 40 yrs. Heb 11:17 By faith, Abraham, being tested, offered up Isaac; and he who had gladly received the promises was offering up his one and only son; James 2 has nothing at all to do with opening the door of your heart to receive Jesus. It has everything to do with OBEDIENCE after you have received HIM as savior. Like this kind of obedience: Jas 2:15-16 And if a brother or sister is naked and in lack of daily food, (16) and one of you tells them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled;" and yet you did not give them the things the body needs, what good is it?

Have You come here to torment us before the time?” Lucas 4:34 saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are-the Holy One of God! They had faith in what Jesus was going to do to them, so what they did? They trembled. Even their faith had an action of works. What was their works from having faith? in what Jesus was going to do to them. What was their works? They Trembled James 2 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe-and tremble! We all also know that Abraham and Rehab where saved by faith alone, before they applied works of faith. " I say works of faith" Their works of faith wasn't what saved them from hell. They applied faith in God when God told them what he wanted them To do. They had faith that their works was the right thing to do. Even if it meant sacrificing his son issac. Same with Rehab, she was sacrifing her life by opening the door to the spies. The believed God without any questions asked. That's how we need to put our works of faith. Believe everything in his word without questions asked. Trust the lord with all your heart. Believe what he says!! That is faith with action. Romans 1:17 God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith. 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God. 25 Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?

James said brothers, talking to saved people. Let's take look; James 2:14 14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them. James is asking the brothers, can that type of faith save the person in need of clothing and food? He is talking about faith and love. 1 John 3:23 23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment He is just teaching us the way we should be. Doesn't mean we are going to give to every homeless in the street. Because God inscripture tells the jobless people to get a job and give to the poor themselfes. Is all with a balance in Gods knowledge. If someone comes in need for food and we have the posibility to give them a hot plate of food. We do, is the correct thing to do when the love of good has been poured in our hearts. Romans 5:5 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. We are commanded to love people. Is the right thing to do. Since God loved us when we were still sinners. We didn't deserve clothing or food. He gave us more than that!! We help out our neighbor because we have the love of God, but we also instruct them with scripture. 2 Thessalonians 3:10 For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. In the prior verses james is talking about us as Christians, we shouldn't have favortism with rich people, and treat the poor badly. That's what the people from the world do. 2 My brethren, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality. 2 For if there should come into your assembly a man with gold rings, in [a]fine apparel, and there should also come in a poor man in [b]filthy clothes, 3 and you [c]pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say to him, “You sit here in a good place,” and say to the poor man, “You stand there,” or, “Sit here at my footstool,” 4 have you not [d]shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? 5 Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him. 6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts?

Respectfully, I disagree with Farley’s explanation here. We know a few things about James. We know this is James, the brother of Jesus, not the apostle James, so this book is not apostolic. The book is Christ-less but I do agree that it’s in the canon for a reason. We know that James was the leader of the early church and we know from the book of Acts, Galatians, Corinthians, Hebrews etc that that church that James was leading was in error, holding on to Moses, they kept running back to the law and Paul had to constantly rebuke them. We saw it with Peter and we saw it with James We know that when James was written, he hadn’t received the mystery of Christ revealed through Paul. This coupled with the fact that we know he was in error from Acts 15 and 21, that this book is a clear picture of the error believers were in by mixing law and grace. This clear picture of the early church’s error shows us our need for the mystery that Christ revealed through Paul, that it is no longer of Moses law, that it is only of Christs Grace.

@@numbers22_28 go back through acts and tell me when was the first gentile after atonement first saved all Israel all through the dispersion all through the stoning of Stephen still all Israel paul wasnt converted until acts 9 he was given a new direct revelation from christ not known to peter and James you wont hear pete and james mention the body of christ, Justification imputed righteousness, sealed until the day of redemption!! none of that! instead its believe in christ be water baptized show good works, endure untill the end etc. and you'll have your sins forgiven, and be resurrected into the kingdom , the body of christ is death burial and resurrection FOR THE REMISSION OF SIN , baptized by the spirit , justified and imputed the righteousness of Christ by faith this is all paul right here Titus3:5 He saved us, not by the righteous deeds we had done, but according to His mercy, through the washing of new birth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. Philippians 3:9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith. Romans1:17 For the gospel reveals the righteousness of God that comes by faith from start to finish, just as it is written: “ The righteous will live by faith.” Romans 4:5 But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness, Romans 4:6 And David speaks likewise of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: Romans 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him… Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus Romans 8:39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. John3:15-17 that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.… John6:47 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life. colossians1:20 and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through the blood of His cross. psalm103:10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins or repaid us according to our iniquities. psalm 103:12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us. 2 corrin 5:19 For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.

Mark 3:29 blapheme against the holy spirit is unforgivable. Romans 7:12 the Torah is holy, Romans 7:14 the Torah is spiritual. Per Strong's Concordance blaspheme is " vilify"..G-987. The Messiah is the Torah made flesh John 1:14.

Friend, respectfully I disagree according to Gods word. I’d say for the Christian today, you should most definitely follow Paul’s teachings that came directly from the ascended Christ Himself. Paul was a minister to the born again believers and the earthly Christ was a minister unto the Jews. Jesus’s red letters gives the Jews the law to show them their need for a savior Paul’s epistles teaches Christ in you, the believer Rightly dividing is so important in understanding Gods word
