Fun fact: Tokyo by itself is not a city. It is just a combination of 23 "wards". Cities in Japan with over 500,000 people can become a city with wards, like mine with 800,000 people and 7 wards. But we have a mayor, and so do the 19 other cities. But Tokyo is not a city, so it does not have a mayor. Its 23 wards are not cities either. They are wards, just like the wards in the 20 cities. So if Tokyo is not a city, what's the capital? Tokyo is united under the Tokyo prefecture (prefectures are like states or provinces), which is made of the 23 wards, plus 26 cities, 3 towns, and 1 village, each having their own mayor. The Tokyo Prefecture acts as the capital and has a governor. Not to be confused with the Tokyo metropolitan area, Which is composed of the Tokyo Prefecture and a few surrounding prefectures. TL;DR Tokyo is a total mess.

Another fun fact: Osaka was gonna be the 2nd city in Japan that will have a similar system to Tokyo. If it happened, the city government of Osaka and it’s surrounding cities would have been dissolved, and the wards of the city of Osaka would’ve been directly under the prefecture and not the city. This never happened because a public referendum revealed that a majority of Osaka citizens didn’t want Osaka to become something similar to Tokyo. The Mayor of Osaka was then forced to resign because he was too confident that the referendum would make Osaka similar to Tokyo and swore to resign if it went otherwise.

I grew up in the East End in the 50s. I lived in Bow, went to school in Stepney, visited relatives in Poplar and played football in Hackney. I remember most people didn't fuss when Tower Hamlets was declared. Nobody could give a toss. There was nothing we could do about it anyway not being toffs. The old names endure. Mile End, even Globe Town were still spoken of. Some of these place names date back to 13th Century London. What Tyler and the men of Kent met Richard 2nd in Mile End in 1381. The Peasant's Revolt is still remembered there.

In the city of Montréal, Canada, a lot the boroughs are just multiple old borough's names slapped together (e.g. Villeray-St-Michel-Parc-Extension, or Rivière-des-Prairies-Pointe-aux-Trembles). One notable exception is 'Le Sud-Ouest,' which just means 'the Southwest,' with no place name in it (Griffintown-St-Henri-Little-Burgundy doesn't exactly roll of the tongue in French).

@@AndrewAbraham83 But why are you relating the difference between Scotland & England to the issue of independence from the UK? Your remark would only have some relevance if England and the UK were synonymous.
@gm2407
@gm2407 3 жыл бұрын
@@amct1019 Well when you look at the history England Conquered Wales and turned it into a principality of England and the only English Pope ever gave Ireland to Henry II of England leading to the centuries of rule there. Henry VIII elevated it to a Kingdom as it was a Lordship before. Scotland was neither conquored nor given to England, the King of Scotland James VI inherited the Kingdoms of England and Ireland as well as the Principality of Wales, it was his idea to refer to it all as Great Britain. The whole country exists because of the crown was the property of one family hence United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland which required several acts of Parliament to create the formal bonds and then remove Republic of Ireland. Even though the Scottish King united these Kingdoms he moved to London and an act of Parliament settled London as Capital, Scotland was depopulated during the industrialisation of Britain as people went to work in towns or left for the colonies. This left England as the most populated and industrially developed part of Britain with many Scots, Irish and Welsh families living in England and their decendents remaining for generations. One look at the old phone books can show just by looking at surnames the significant number of Scots, Welsh and Irish surnamed people living in England (family could have moved at any time in the last 423 years). England may not be synonymous with UK but it constitutes the largest part of the population, and has absorbed more resources and peoples from the other parts of the UK than they have from England. On the other part of this the whole of what would later be England and Wales was part of the Roman Province of Britannia where we get the name from. Ireland was Hibernia and Scotland was Picts.

Whilst I find it impressive, I find it tiresome when watching the video, I don't want joke after joke, I want the information in a fun video. Not an over the top video. I wish he'd focused more on sound design than jokes and special shots to give the information that the video is made for

I personally love how creative he presents these rather abstract to portray topics. Makes the videos much more enjoyable to watch.

The amount of work that goes into just a few seconds of these videos is insane! Take 4:23 for example. The idea of hiring 2 extras, printing them 2 t-shirts that say E and W, giving them pig masks, putting them in front of a green screen and telling them to fight just for a little visual gag is both staggering and brilliant!

Exactly. For example, literally every slide from 6:39 to 6:58 shows each of the former borough's names, their population sizes respectively, their new name once merged together and their precise location on a London map on the bottom right of the video. Hell, there's even a (fairly long) cliff note on the slide shown at 6:58 if you pause it. He makes the kind of videos you can watch 10 times in a row and still catch a bit of new information or notice something different each time. Amazing, high quality, information rich filled videos.
