I retired on 30 Dec 23, OPM received my packet from DFAS on 11 Jan 24, interim pay issued 23 Jan 24, and my retirement was finalized on 2 Feb 24. No military buy back or any break in service, a pretty simple application.

I retired from DOJ on November 30th, 2023. My retirement case was finalized on Groundhog Day (2-2-24). I received the balance of my Annual Leave on December 23rd. My first interim payment was on January 3, 2024. The next interim was on February 1. I'm supposed to receive my first TSP withdrawal . . . tomorrow! The process is not terrible for most. Dozens I saw processed in 4 months max. You get AL payout and access to TSP within 30 days and temp annuity in 60 days. If you call early OPM is actually very helpful (need your CSA claim number first though or they cannot do anything). There is the occasional bad story but usually because there was an issue with multiple agencies/spouses/military time etc. Just make sure you have ducks in a row!

You can avoid the TSP wait by retiring early in the year say January. Take a taxable distribution from TSP deposited directly into your bank account for the amount you would pull for the whole year. This gives you the bridge funds to wait out the process and TSP withdrawals if you have a financial institution and accounts established for the withdrawal to land only take about 7 to 10 business days. You do have to pay the 20% tax withholding but you will true that up when you file your tax return at the end of the year or you can adjust the withholding from your pension if you believe you are in the less than 20% tax bracket.

@@PlanYourFederalBenefits thanks for the reply. I should have stated for a person 59 1/2 or older we can withdraw from the TSP at least once a month with no tax penalty. The money is in my bank within 3 days. After retirement the rules change of course, I guess this 6 weeks is how long it takes for that change to become effective? But at retirement age there is no tax penalty for withdrawing from TSP, that concern seems overblown. Seems like I could just withdraw a couple of months worth of funds to hold me over until the interim payments kick in?

@@PlanYourFederalBenefits Yes. Smooth as could be. I have another question about Thrift Savings that maybe you could help me with. I have a very handsome sum in the TSP. It's all in G to safeguard it. Even since retiring, not contributing to it any longer, it still earns interest to the tune of 25K per year. The current interest rate is below 1%. My question is, eventually I will have to withdraw it and pay 20% federal tax. That's unavoidable. Would it be wise to withdraw a nice chunk of it now, pay the 20% tax and put it into a 5% CD? I want the security of not losing any of it but want to earn more than the current less than 1%. Also, for asset protection purposes, a lawyer advised me to turn it into an annuity rather than life-expectancy withdrawals. Any knowledge on that? If you are retiring in the middle of the year, beware the tax issue if you take the leave balance, and don't adjust your TSP accordingly. I speak from experience, I retired in July, and got the lump sum. I didn't adjust my TSP to account for the 6 months of not contributing, and receiving the lump sum (which was about 20K) Now, I have to pay an extra few thousand dollars in taxes. Ouch. The other thing to watch for is if you were prior military and took terminal leave. If there is overlap in your start of civil service and terminal leave, that time is not credited towards your civil service.

That's why you use your annual leave before you retire. Receive the same amount of pay with added service credit, a/l, s/l, tsp match as well. Sorry, but I don't understand your comment about taxes from your lump sum. You may have had a larger amount withheld from your lump sum, but when you file your taxes, that'll all be considered ordinary income at your marginal tax bracket and it'll all even out in the end, i.e, maybe a refund. I agree with your TSP comment. Contributions to TSP can only occur through payroll. So if one knows they're retiring early or middle of the year, it may be worth considering front loading the TSP contribution.

The truth is nobody will actually process your application until you actually walk out the door on the last day, but your retirement specialist will have it ready with all the signatures. The next business day, your specialist will send to your agency's payroll department. They will process your last paycheck and any annual leave lump sum in it's routine cycle. I believe they will certify your final Sick Leave hours. After all that, they will send the package to OPM, via US Mail. That is the first time OPM will see it. Hope that clarifies...

Your health coverage is still good during this transition, right?
@b.coxemba6799

Unfortunately the government is slow. In my case OPM back pay my healthcare insurance premiums to the date of my retirement. But I had to cover all health issues. You will not have proof of insurance until you receive full retirement checks. The good news is doctors will reimburse your expenses minus any co-payments and deductibles. Luckily I had the money. This process takes a while. You'll be responsible for paying your dental insurance during this time.

Yes. Health coverage is continuous through the process. I had the same concern about health care as I think you do. I retired from Federal service mid August 2023, I got completely through the transition by early October. My interim payment started coming in early December, about 3 weeks after my retirement. My retirement wasn't complicated and I didn't retire at the end of December, which is when lots of people retire, resulting in a slug of work that takes OPM a while to work through. I'd heard from multiple co-workers that retiring in December resulted in the longest wait time for full transition. Overall I had a very good experience. Good luck to other new retirees.

Two YEARS before I retired I was advised to send in my Divorce Decree Declaration a year or more before my actual retirement. I was amazed at the silly amount of time it would take to process this. Well, I did as I was told. I submitted the documentation two YEARS before I retired. I got a response back one YEAR after my application. They said I made a mistake on the form. Fine. I re-submitted and received a response back ten MONTHS later saying that my divorce decree was missing a page. What? Sure enough, the City Clerk left a page off. Well damn. I resubmitted three months ago and am still waiting for my full civil service retirement pension. In the meantime, I am receiving only $54 per month. Objectively speaking, doesn't anyone think that that it should take 6 months to a year to get the pension you earned? Answer: NO! But, like the Mr. Haws said, if you make ANY mistakes you will screw yourself.

@@erickarnell Correct, SS has nothing to do with OPM. My thought was that an eligible retiree could start drawing SS while waiting for OPM to catch up.
