The subsidies from the government definitely do help increase the birth rate. Look at Hungary since 2010. If your birth rate is below 1, that is a huge problem.
@AlecMuller5 күн бұрын
What data are you looking at? The St. Louis Fed shows a peak TFR of 1.61 in 2021, a decline to 1.52 in 2022, and no newer data. Macrotrends shows a lower crude birthrate now than in 2010. The big question with subsidies is whether they work in the long term or just pull births (that were going to happen anyway) in by a few years.

Raising non-marital birthrates is a terrible idea. Probably the best idea is to subsidise married couples who have at least 4 children, provided both parents are stable, with the father being in a professional occupation, skilled trade or business owner. Often children from well functioning large families are better adjusted socially than those from small famikies.

Eastern Asian peoples are all facing this problem. Bangkok where i live in is also aging very fast. It brings about economic downturn and influx of immigrants and foreign worker as long as governments can afford to accept them. But this negative spiral would occur to any other nation very soon. China’s birth rate is rapidly declining.
@pineapplesareyummy6352Күн бұрын
The birth rates of China and other East Asian countries isn't "rapidly declining" - they have ALREADY collapsed to a level in the low 1.x, some even below, like South Korea. It is more of a question whether any of these societies have hit rock bottom in their birth rates, because a rebound is clearly necessary if East Asian societies aren't just going to voluntarily become extinct. When South Korea is at about 0.7-0.8, China about 1.1-1.3, Japan around 1.3, Taiwan maybe 1.0, it seems these rates can't get much lower but I might be wrong.

I was an American studying at Taiwan Normal University in 1988-89 and taught English on the side to elementary to high School students. This was not apparent at that time yet I know it is a big problem in Japan and mainland China at this time. Yes the population in all these places has become well educated, richer, but works long hours and very hard. The idea that Communist China with its failing economy and and declining population can could invade Taiwan is not logical but who said communists are logical. A war would destroy both countries and have huge impact on the youth of both countries. MA East Asian Studies Chinese, Fulbright Scholar Japan 2003, Fulbright Scholar China 2005.

40,000 NTD is less than one month's salary for many high tech jobs and not enough to pay a lifetime's mortgage. It is not an incentive for having a child or buying a house, which having extra children will necessitate. It might just pay for an extra cup of coffee in the morning for a few years. If the government is serious about it, the incentive has to be serious. The incentive needs to meet the lifetime requirements resulting from a lifetime decision; they can't be just paltry, temporary baits. On the other hand, a declining population is not all bad. Less tear and wear on the environment, reduction in carbon emissions, etc.
