When the new Racing Point the RP20 hit the track for the first time, lots of people very quickly noticed it's strange but very close similarity to the 2019 Mercedes. For 2020 Racing point have essentially taken the WO10 from 2019 and applied many of it's major aerodynamic concepts to their car. Why did they do this and how similar are the cars, find out in this video.

Rival teams unhappy with RP20 being ‘Mercedes copy’
According to a report by Auto Motor und Sport, teams aren’t too impressed with Racing Point using an exact copy of Mercedes’ W10.
Racing Point revealed their 2020 challenger, the RP20, on February 17, and straight away the world of motorsport was talking about that bright pink livery.
But now, after seeing it hit the track for the first time in pre-season testing, unnamed rival teams are saying the RP20 is an “exact copy” of the W10 after closer inspections.
Racing Point’s technical director Andrew Green has defended his team’s relationship with Mercedes, though.
“We have been working in the Mercedes wind tunnel since May last year,” he told Auto Motor und Sport.
“Front and rear suspension and the transmission come one to one from the 2019 Mercedes.
“We are only now starting with the new car for 2021.”
The similarities are perhaps most noticeable at the front of the side air boxes, though the designs are not identical.
Racing Point has also closely followed the front wing design of the W10 with its thin structure and duck bill.
“Most of all you would rather not have a nose. The thinner it is, the easier it is to control the Y 250 vertebrae,” Green explained.
He also expects Racing Point to take a big step forwards in the midfield battle should the engine gains from Mercedes which they are seeing in the data be replicated on the track.
“If we get the data on the line, we will take a giant step forward,” he said.
Sergio Perez actually finished the morning session of the opening day of pre-season testing only 0.062s slower than Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas in P1.
And with Green revealing that “Sergio still had a lot of petrol on board and drove the C3 tires on his fast laps,” it would appear that closely following the Mercedes design could serve Racing Point well in 2020.
Racing Point rivals allegedly unhappy with RP20 Mercedes clone
Racing Point has apparently drawn the ire of a few of its rivals for fielding a car that closely resembles last season's championship winning Mercedes W10.
The Silverstone-based squad gave its new RP20 in baptism of fire in Barcelona on Wednesday morning, with the car raising a few eyebrows as it rolled down the pitlane.
The pink charger's copycat duckbill-like Mercedes nose was the first indication of where the inspiration for the RP20's design had come from, although Racing Point tech boss Andy Green described the car as "entirely new".
"There’s very little carryover from our 2019 car," said Green.
"For 2020, we designed the car from scratch, starting from almost a blank sheet of paper - which is very exciting, because the team hasn’t been in a position to do this in a very long time.
"We’ve applied everything that we’ve learnt over the past seasons, combined this with what we’ve seen adopted by some of our competitors, and we’ve given it our best shot at optimising the final season of these present regulations."
Still, Green admitted that some of the car's major components had been sourced from Mercedes, the pink outfit's engine supplier, while most of the RP20's aero design was done by Racing Point's own engineers.
In addition to the power unit, transmission and hydraulics, the suspension elements also come mainly from Brackley, as the techncial rules allow.
"Front and rear suspension and the transmission come one to one from the 2019 Mercedes," Green told Auto Motor und Sport's Tobi Grüner.
Next year's big regulation changes incited Racing Point to work with a proven concept for this season, which included shying away from the high-rake approach favoured by Red Bull.
"We have been working in the Mercedes wind tunnel since May last year," added Green.
