Nothing unusual about the external battery start in older sports and open wheeler cars. Most FIA reg open wheelers up until the 90s ran a total loss system (no alternator). It wasn't an issue because the instruments (mechanical) and induction (carb or mechanical fuel injection) didn't draw current. The only draw was ignition and the rain light. Sports cars had a small alternator for lights etc especially for longer endurance but it sucked power when every hp counts and was another thing to break

I believe it also has gas in the tubealre frame to make it even lighter...
@ren9839 Жыл бұрын
That was a misconception and kind of a conspiracy theory amongst the racing teams in order to get it disqualified. They did fill the frame with air but it was just normal air from a compressor. They did it because (im pretty sure) the tubular frame was made from aluminum and during stops theyd check the psi to make sure the frame didnt crack.
@TempSlothy Жыл бұрын
also adding helium or something into the frame doesn't matter as much as you may think. Weight is not the main concern, it's mass. You actually want the car to have the most weight on the wheels with the least mass (using aero). The difference in mass between helium and air is effectively inconsequential, and it would probably cancel out any benefits by taking weight off the wheels.
@not_even_me5035 Жыл бұрын
It was filled with nitrogen because the tube frame was built with almost 0 redundancy. This allowed them to check for breaks in the frame by monitoring the pressure.
@yoslauda4714 Жыл бұрын
@@ren9839ut wait, did they depressurized the tubes before went to the grid?
@michaelbrady9056 Жыл бұрын
@@yoslauda4714Nope! As others have stated, they could check the air pressure inside the tubular frame during the race (pit stops, etc) as these cars did endurance events (6, 12, or 24hr races). If the pressure fell, they knew the frame was "leaking" and thus had a crack or hole in it. The Germans were and are amazingly clever engineers...

fun fact: the engine of the 917 is not a porsche typical boxer type flat engine, but rather a 180° V12 flat type engine. the difference is that in a boxer engine each piston has it's own crank pin, in v-type engines 2 pistons share one crank pin. therefore in a boxer engine opposing pistons reach TDC simultaneously, while in a V-type engine, opposing pistons alternate when one reaches TDC the other reaches BDC at the same time.

A very good friend of my dad, Michel Weber, came third at Le Mans in a Porsche 908 Langheck in 1972. At one point during the race, he hit a bump on the mulsanne straight while going 200mph, flying through the air for over 60 meters before landing again. It can start with just the little battery if it cuts out during the race and needs to quickly be restarted. But only try to start it a couple times till the battery runs out and it can’t start the engine when it’s cold only when it’s been racing and is already warm.
