Instead of hiring real people, disney now tells its audience that its okay to replace them by CGI animated versions, when they could have as well helped little people be more humanized through the story in the movie to impressionale audiences like kids as well. Changing the characters to CGI doesnt change the fact they are little, it just steals working opportunities from the actual group affected.

@trika91Ай бұрын
I heard it was one of the contributing factors in why Tangled, Moana, and Wish weren’t 2D. Those projects started with the intention of being 2D animated, but the powers that be (time constraints, pressure to use new technology, few animators) made them make it 3D. It wasn’t just the fact that Disney higher ups were pushing for 3D/CG cause it was “easier” and (the most important part) faster to animate, but since they let go of their 2D division there wasn’t enough animators to actually make the films 2D (they only have a few 2D animators left to make short films, not feature length); so they’re pretty much stuck making strictly 3D films cause they no longer have the resources (ie. not wanting to put in the time and effort to find/hire/train 2D animators) to make 2D films, even if they originally wanted to.

I am certain it's not going to be permanent. Disney has made it very clear they're only about money, and with all this anger over live action they're going to start turning to other things. If/when they think 2D will make profit, they'll go running back, tail between their legs.

With the commentary on Merchandise, turning Hercules into basically a Basketball Star of the 90s, the CHOIR which is very very obviously American. Other example: little Mermaid. It's a Mermaid in a non descript ocean. She could be anywhere. Just because Andersen wrote the Story, she doesnt have to be swimming in the north sea. And lets Not even mention the jamaican crab that was definetely Not anywhere in the "original" Story. It's likely the tiny, cramped houses, working in caves and being emotionally and intellectually simple - treating little people like kids or - worse - magical beings equivalent to talking animals. It would be much, MUCH better to give them a bigger house (they bring home precious gems all day! If they can't build, they can certainly buy!) Give their career some respect if you show it at all (make the operation more complex, have dedicated tools that imply intelligence and preparation, etc. ) and the most important, give them actual personalities and *names*, not a single emotion (or however you define sneezy and doc) for both. Even if you have a grumpy guy, let him have a real name (have snow call him grumpy *once* if you need to make the reference) and give him something else to him. Maybe he handles the finances, whatever - just a personality is not a big ask. The original dwarves were very empty characters, very much not something a little actor could flex their chops with without going out of "character" with their one emotion. That's the trouble though, Disney tends to make huge, nonsense casts these days and spend NO time characterizing them. Wish was the same flavor of empty nothing. No one has wants and dreams, they just take action so plot can happen because there is no character, no personality to inform their choices.

My biggest disappointment with newer Disney movies is the bland same characterisation of all the princesses we get. Snow White was my favourite princess as a kid because I was a shy homebody who liked to bake and I loved the idea of having cute animal friends who would make pies with me! I genuinely am sad that there aren't a variety of princess characters for kids these days, they're all quirky tough girlbosses. Some kids like those characters, a bunch of my friends loved Mulan because of that. But some of us liked the shy quiet characters who won because they were sweet and kind!

All kinds of women exist and Cinderella and Snow White are strong in their own ways. Quirky is not bad and it’s great to show that kind of women! But I feel that what Merida and Elsa did well has now been commodified into the one acceptable character of women which is, though at least uplifting independence, almost back to the original complaints.

I think everyone interpreted Dinklage’s comments as ‘don’t cast little people, but I don’t think that’s what he’s saying. I think his point was about the story, where the dwarves are nothing but props for Snow White and have no personality, just these ridiculous names. If they had actually turned them into real characters then casting little people wouldn’t have been an issue. There was a version of Snow White that I saw discussed in an earlier video on this channel, where the seven characters weren’t dwarves, but one is Snow White’s love interest. As a feminist myself, I HATE the backlash that Snow White has gotten from people, calling her "weak" and "boring". First of all, Snow White is a 14 year old girl who lost both of her parents. Her evil stepmother took over the Kingdom and forced Snow White into slavery, making her work as a scullery maid. Then, her stepmother, a grown ass woman, randomly decides to have her killed in such a gruesome way, hence the huntsman being ordered to literally cut Snow White's heart out with a dagger and return it in a fancy box. Snow White's "crime" is that she is prettier than her stepmom. She now has to leave the only home she has ever known. She has nowhere to go and doesn't know what's going to happen to her. She then gets poisoned and put in a coma. Despite all this shit that Snow White is going through, she still remains optimistic, humble, and kind. THAT takes great strength. Snow White is not weak by any means. To me, she is a girl-boss simply for handling her situation so well, especially at age 14. Also, Snow White is not a boring person. I always found her demeanor and sassy vibe entertaining. She's not my favorite Disney princess, but she is honestly one of the more relatable princesses. Let me ask you this. How would YOU have handled Snow White's situation? She sure handled it better than I would have. 💀

I don't think there's a problem not having a love story, especially in media for children, if you're going to explore other themes that are more relevant to that demographic like adventure, working to a goal, learning a lesson about life in a non-preachy way which Disney is usually pretty good at. I think the adult audience, who grew up on the originals, sometimes forget these are for kids primarily and it's nice to have media for girls not have romance in it every time. There are lots of other things to explore in life and girls' media has been pretty narrow in the past. Lots of stuff on friendship and romance, not much on working for something that's important to you or protecting what you love (though I applaud Mulan for covering that so well) or valuing knowledge. Romance isn't bad but it is over-represented in girls' media for sure. I think people who write for kids tend to underestimate the varied interests of girls and the emotional side of boys.

I’m pretty sure there is a prince or prince-adjacent character. You can see him in the teaser. He looks like a commoner, but he could be the prince disguised as a peasant to see what the commoners are up to. I’ve even heard that this version will try to develop their relationship instead of being a deus ex machina. I do disagree with the criticisms of the prince being weird for kissing a “dead” girl. Kissing dead people is a way of saying goodbye to them. Idk if the Disney team knew this though.

10:54 - There it is. That's the point, right there. It's not about the race swaps; it's about the pandering and tokenization of beloved characters just to appeal to ESG money. Disney claims to care about "representation" but can't even be bothered to use seven actual little people or an albino actress in their latest movie. It's all fake and I can't respect people who believe the big mega corporation actually cares about "representing" them. And Rachel Zegler most definitely deserves blame, as she has said too many controversial things in her short career to not only tank this movie, but almost every movie she's been in so far. She's simply not a nice or decent human being, even by Hollywood standards, and needs to stay off social media. I watched both Snow White and the Huntsman and Mirror Mirror last week back-to-back with a friend cause she said both were going to be better than the Snow White remake. I have this exact opinion too. I’m a fair-skinned Chinese girl with round eyes who loved and saw myself in Snow White since I was young, since a lot of the time Asians are depicted in Western media with yellow skin and slanted eyes, and we don’t all look like that. I don’t look like that, that’s for sure. I always thought it would be cool to see an Asian Snow White both to represent Asians that share my complexion and to shatter the stereotype of Asians having yellow skin-hell, a lot of people today think Asians can’t naturally be pale and all Asians who are pale use powder or bleach their skin to look white. At least Mulan didn’t have yellow skin. But sometimes she isn’t depicted as pale as the European princesses-Americans seem unable to comprehend that people who aren’t white can be just as pale or even paler than white people, which is racist in and of itself; claiming that only white people can be pale and “people of colour” (that’s why I hate the term) can only be darker, whether tan, yellow, or dark. I mean, I’m surprised at how many Americans think Persians, who are light-skinned, are BLACK! In terms of why Disney didn’t look at Asian girls for Snow White: Live Action Mulan (which was HORRIBLE). They think that one movie with an Asian protagonist is good enough for representation and that is all they need to do. They don’t think about the variances of our skin colour, eye shape, or personality. Some of us are soft people who like to help others and are romantics who want to find love, like Snow White. We’re not all tough martial arts fighters who struggle with our families’ expectations of us like how Americans think we all are. Heck, that one fairly recent Raya and the Last Dragon movie (which was not great LMAO) depicted its protagonist as a tough sword-fighting girl-when can we get an Asian Disney protagonist who’s a sweet romantic and who does NOT fight physically in any way? I’m so tired of the stereotypes and strange gatekeeping of softer/romantic personalities from characters that aren’t white.

My personal issue with Zegler in the context of skin tone is that it felt like Disney wanted to have their cake and eat it, too, but never thought beyond name recognition. Given the significance of the whole "skin as white as snow," why not cast an actress of East Asian or Philipino descent? Phillipa Soo is right there (though she is 34, so maybe not) and would have killed it by fitting the features and the talented voice. There are so many non-white actresses with phenomenal voices that could have fit the "white as snow" category without resorting to Euro-centric features. But also, yeah, if you were dead set on Zegler, at least give her red lips and pitch-black hair. I think if they had made her hair unnaturally darker (incorporate some cool undertones), it would have made her seem even a bit paler and, therefore fit the character and, as the video says, giver her a fighting chance.
@GiulianaBrunaАй бұрын
Agree. I may be wrong, but I feel like people from latinoamerica are taken as the "PoC but not really" cast. Not only at Disney. Like, you have Camila Cabello as the "first Latina Cinderella" as if that's progressive but she still has euro-like features. She is not "White as snow" but look whitish enough to not be too disruptive (they don't choose Afro-Latino, Asian-Latinos, Native people or any dark skinned latinos). I won't complain about having a princess that looks "more like me" but it feels cheap at this point. No one asked for this.

Yes ! Like her appearance matter. Disney could've 1) made a modern retelling of Snow White. In this version, the girl would be nicknamed Snow White (maybe because she's beautiful, likes apples and has an evil stepmother who's vain). Then it wouldn't matter if she's not white. 2) Cast a pale poc or an albino. They exists. There's already two movies where Snow White is east asian. 3) They keep the movie/live action as it is BUT Snow White name is now "Bianca Von Schnee" or something like that. Basically her name would mean "white" (hence why she would be called Bianca. Like how Little Red Riding Hood is often called Red, or how Cinderella is often either called Cindy or Ella) and her family name/the name of her country is "snow".

OMG yes! As a fair-skinned Chinese girl who loved and saw myself in Snow White ever since I was young, I’ve always thought it would really cool to see an Asian Snow White, especially since Western media often depicts us with yellow skin even though we don’t all look like that, and I didn’t see myself in these stereotypical yellow-skinned characters. On the other hand, it might possibly be really weird and jarring if they had a visibly fully-Asian Snow White in an obviously European setting with no reasonable precedence. Perhaps they could get a half-Asian half-white actress to play her (it has been done before with a 2001 adaptation starring Kristin Kreuk of Chinese and Dutch decent) and have one of Snow’s parents be Asian, perhaps her mom since white skin and black hair is the traditional East Asian beauty standard and in the original tale her mom wished for a child as white as snow, as red as blood and as black as ebony after pricking her finger while sewing. If she was several decades younger and wasn’t already the singing voice of two Disney Princesses, I would have recommended Lea Salonga for the role if we were looking for fully-Asian actresses. She is pretty fair-skinned and has the most gorgeous voice that can sound sweet and delicate yet strong and powerful. Lea is not a Disney Legend or a Filipino National Treasure for nothing! For half-Asian actresses, Arielle Jacobs and Ali Ewoldt are two Broadway actresses of half-Filipino descent who have a type of appearance that could pass for Snow White. I swear Disney is extremely creatively bankrupt when it comes to casting and ways to bring fresh takes while keeping the important aspects of the original. Rather than look for actresses like the above, they just completely disregard the pale skin and jet-black hair that is vital to the original character, who is ironically actually the only princess whose skin colour being pale truly matters! Oh my, if you know how the remake apparently explains the origin of Snow White’s name since she is no longer pale in this version…it is extremely cringe and seems more focused on making her seem physically strong (read: stereotypically masculine) rather than beautiful.

Keeping them recognizable but refreshingly new. Now the princess just girlboss too close to the sun while forgetting what made them memorable.

Yeah and even with Cinderella, they gave her a little more motivation to explain why she stayed with her stepmother and stepsisters: because she wanted to take care of the home shew grew up in and felt like it was her responsibility to her parents who had loved their home. I think the hate to Rachel Zegler was also because of how she behaved towards the original. Just compare her to Halle Bailey, while people didn't like the cast, just very few people attacked her per say, especially because people saw she both loved the original and was very happy to play Ariel. Rachel brought that on herself by attacking the original and many fans at once, and this obiviously back fired on the movie itself.
@Echo-mg5em18 күн бұрын
That’s a very good point. Bailey herself stayed above the fray by not engaging in the online controversy, which was really classy and professional. Zegler didn’t have to pretend she loved the film or the character, obviously she’s not the first to be dismissive about her role-Daniel Craig whining about James Bond is so stupid, it’s not like someone forced him to play 007-but she took it to another level by making snide jokes about her male colleague’s scenes being potentially cut. That’s just so tacky and disrespectful.

I will say, as a concept artist, the Snow White costume here has some terrible color choices. It looks so flat and plastic. If badly needed the dark blue, especially to make the red pop. If Disney wants good representation of little people for the dwarves, they should have done something like Mirror Mirror.
@CorbieWooАй бұрын
This! The lack of dark blue and resulting contrast makes me want to pull my eyes out. It was part of what made the original Snow White’s design so great. Similar problem to Halle’s Ariel having very dull almost brown hair that blends into her skin and does not look appealing, nor evoke Ariel. Considering Sandy Powell (who made the costumes for the Snow White remake) is an award-winning designer who also made the gorgeous live-action Cinderella dress, I believe this was because of executive meddling.

they didn't really need to make Snow White into some Mary Sue feminist... they needed to examine why the Queen is so fearful of losing her looks and getting older. This is the real catalyst for the story, and it's rooted in the belief when the tale was first written that a woman's value and power is based solely on her attractiveness to men. If they actually explained this aspect of the story, they could have made the Queen more sympathetic and understandable as to why she's acting the way she is. Yes, she is vain, but she is vain because she knows once she ages, people will stop respecting her. We can see examples of this just scrolling through social media, let alone throughout history. If the studio wanted a more 'feminist/modern' retelling of the story, I think that would have been the more powerful way to approach it.

Her appearance isn't even that much off from the actual snow white, if like you said they used red lipstick and the proper hairstyle. Also i can actually understand some of the criticisms about "forced wokeness" with Disney, when they had to cast a WOC for the little mermaid for example, that was not needed to change it that much. It's not 'the racist fans', it's a reaction to the racism of Disney. When there was diverse casting in the past, they still primarily kept to the original story. Now, every time Disney diversifies a character the story is changed as well. With the intention of pushing woke political views. The reason that Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin were all successful is because dispite the addition of some woke elements, they generally kept to the original story. Mulan, Pinocchio, Peter Pan and Wendy, and Little Mermaid were all flops because they all bastardized the original story. They simply became vehicles to push a woke agenda. And the Zegler Snow White is doing the same thing. It will absolutely bomb at the box office. Most of the reaction to Rachel Zegler is because she went out and blatantly bashed the original. She created most of the backlash. Are there some racists in the fan base? Yes. But they are a small minority. And many people are sick of Hollywood coming along and calling people racist for not accepting racist cultural appropriation. The Left demonizes people for wearing Sombreros on Cinco de Mayo when they are white, and then think it's okay to appropriate a German story by changing the ethnicity of a German princess. It's not color blind casting, it's a malicious effort to erase all white, European characters, and replace them with diverse characters. This is the true cause for the backlash. Racist casting. No one had a problem with diverse characters in original stories. Aladdan, Mulan, Princess and the Frog, Moana, Encanto and so on, showed that. But you don’t get to appropriate other people's cultures, after lectures about cultural appropriation, and then call them racist for pointing it out. This makes fans of the originals enemies. Make new stories about African culture, or Asian culture, or Latin American culture. Then you will have diversity, not only in appearance, but also in culture. If diversity was the goal, this is what Hollywood would be doing. But it's become obvious that the real goal is the bastardization and destruction of white European culture. Or perhaps European culture is the only one who's stories Hollywood believes in. And so instead of telling stories about cultures from across the world, they take stories from European culture and appropriate them to virtue signal. If the Rachel Zegler Snow White actually honored the original, showing respect for the culture the story came from, there would be minimal reaction from fans. And it would have made a Billion dollars at the box office. But woke politics was more important. You're right that Disney could easily experiment with new stories. But they decided to use that spare capital to push the woke political message. And actively antagonize half of their potential audience. People want entertainment, not a political lecture. Respect the original stories. Tell new ones from diverse cultures. And get back to making entertainment, instead of political propaganda.

i feel like disney & other companies don't really get that writing a strong female character doesn't automatically mean reverting them to the girlboss archetype. it doesn't even really inherently mean physically or mentally strong, but they should just be interesting & written like a person (even with some limitations in fantasy stories) i feel also sometimes it can reinforce gender stereotypes. not sure how to explain but just dismissing certain traits of characters because they are flaws or considered "feminine" & therefore weak isn't the way to go. i get not simplifying them to these traits, but they can still have them & they can work as positive & negative. also it's kinda the point of snow white that she isn't supposed to have much agency, it's what she does/thinks in those constraints. maybe people would be able to see this more if they adapted the original story where she's 7 years old & highlight more that she was literally abused for years.

Simply calling people who cared about the cast looking like in their childhood racist is a major cop out.

Disney's live version of Peter Pan was terrible. The 2003 Peter Pan is infinitely better.

It's not racist to want live action characters to look like how they originally did in the animations, and for them to also look like they come from the region and time period the movie is set in.

I love how you gave a nuanced dissection about why the movie is worse than what some other KZbinrs are doing where they are just blaming Rachel Zegler for all the things wrong with the movie. I'm so tired of POC actors and actresses bearing the brunt of the blame for most of the problems and executives doing nothing leaving them to fend for themselves I also love that last quip at the end knowing that Disney made movies for EVERYONE. The biggest example is Mary Poppins. Hell the movie was nominated for 13 Oscars, it really showed that back when Disney (the company) was making movies for everyone, they shined through.

yeah people forget disney got this big in the first place because they used to make movies so good that everyone could enjoy them. they used to try to push the film industry forward. they used to be pioneers and trendsetters. and then they gave up

The amount of racism shes faced for this movie is sickeningggg. Like yeah, I personally dont think she really looks too much like snow white (although some people disagree but we all have our interpretations) but hating her for what the casting director did? Its just weird. Hating her for decisions that go beyond her? Weird.
@Alicegilbert28Ай бұрын
@@Rachel-zf2wm People don't like her because she's very prideful and don't understand snow white. The color of her skin is not the problem. But to replace characters with a new origin is hypocrisy when if it was a black character becoming white it would start a war. Diana is a black princess and she was such good character. Why don't use that movie or just...create a new character ? Its to replace somethingg we know and love that make people angry.
@bboyblaze9860Ай бұрын
@@Rachel-zf2wmI think you might have that wrong. Perhaps the initial backlash was around her race, but that happens with every major casting nowadays Lady Gaga as Harley, Pattinson as Batman etc. Most of the current backlash that she is facing is from her own doing with her obnoxious comments during the pre-release tours of the movie in addition to a lack of having an unlikable personality that her words in interviews never seem to make up for.

Disney lost their spark. It’s sad. They used to be so imaginative and innovative but now it’s like cash grab after cash grab. It just feels unauthentic. Like not everything needs to become a live movie adaptation. Personally, I miss the hand- drawn animation it was very old- school and had its own lane. I really miss that type of animation. Everything is all computer generated and I get it, it’s cost effective, more time efficient but it’s boring. It’s the same thing over and over

"Do kids not deserve better?" Exactly. If anything, producing media FOR kids should be MORE responsibility, not less; it should be held to a much MUCH higher standard than anything else, not excused for being lazy. It's interacting directly with the most vulnerable, moldable minds, it's called "formative years" for a reason. Adults have their filters intact, kids don't. Whatever they see, they consume, their future tastes and beliefs and worldviews are being constructed- it's no copout, children's heads aren't dumpsters, stop treating them as such, we should give them THE BEST. Gosh this argument makes me angry. Every. Single. Time.
