Why does this scammer get mad? The fake petition scam exposed. A warning for tourists.TL;DR - In certain places especially in Europe there are people who try to scam tourists out of their money by pretending to seek signatures for a petition and donations, don't fall for it!
Having been targeted for this scam over the years and having witnessed it being repeatedly perpetrated on others (sometimes successfully)-: I decided to record it happening to then be able to explain it and use the explanation as a warning against it. I managed to capture the main elements of the scam to make this brief entertaining if somewhat educational warning video.
This is a caution video for folks planning on visiting primarily European cities but also other big cities worldwide in general. This applies particularly for folks visiting heavily touristed areas. Don't fall for this street scam!

I was an unfortunate victim of this scam a couple of years ago while visiting Berlin. Thankfully an off duty politzei noticed and arrested the two women that had harassed us (I figured it was a scam but I was 21, frightened and felt cornered so I gave one of them a single euro to get them to leave me alone). We made a statement, got my euro back and the politzei were grateful that they were able to charge the women. Lesson learned though - will be much more diligent and confident next time I travel abroad!

Sometimes they got the police on their side. I've been watching a guy who expose scammers, beggers, extortionist, etc., in India and they even try in front of the police. I'm from MX city btw and lot of diff kinds scams as well in there and all MX imo.

Just wanted to add that aside from ignoring them, never let yourself be alone. Always have someone with you.. I was a victim just last week. I was suddenly grabbed by 3 petition girls (This was on the way to Louvre museum. There's a part with no people on the entrance and it's dark. My fiancee trailing a few steps ahead.) They were asking for signature and I just looked straight but afterwards, the two girls grabbed my hand like they were hugging me. They were able to take my wallet but after that I screamed so loud they dropped it and ran. Very traumatic experience. I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else!!

I met that very same smiling face just last week in Paris, and quickly said a loud "No" and walked away. Now I know why I did that, at the time I didn't. A few days later (my last day in Paris) on another bridge closer to the Louvre I was approached by the "gold ring" lady. I told her I couldn't accept the ring because then I'd have to marry her, then walked fast up to the stoplight at the end of the bridge... (I sort of sensed this one was a scam).

Well some of u are right some not, they are gypsies( genes from India)living in Romania. In Romania are 2 nationalities: 1 romanians the white ones and 2. The " romii " (- as we say ) gypsy one who they moved long time ago in Romania . They do lots of those kind of things and doesn't work. Most of the people think Romania is like that but it's not! Hopefully people will understand the difference.

I got pickpocketed 200€ out of my wallet while donating 1 euro in Spain 30 years ago. I WAS paying attention, I held my wallet firmly in my hand, just opening the coin compartiment. I didn´t FEEL A THING, didn´t SEE a thing while looking at her hands and my wallet ALL the time. My wife said, honey you might have been robbed. I told her it was not possible and I´m not that stupid. You should have seen my face when I finally checked in order to stop her from worrying.

This scam was tried on me in Paris by the Arc de Triumph using this exact ploy. One distracted me with the petition, another circled me to see where I had my wallet (zipped up jacket pocket) while the third waited to be handed the wallet. Felt #2 unzipping my jacket so I slapped her hand away and yelled "Get your fXXXXing hands off my wallet!" The 3 woman scattered like cockroaches when the lights go on. Later, by Nortre Dame, I saw the same act in progress and warned the old lady that these were pick pocketers and not to give them money. The pick pocketers got mad at me and I just smiled....

This happened to me at the Ópera Garnier last week when I visited Paris with my family in law. I was taking pictures and was focused on my screen so I didn't notice this woman creeping up to me until she deliberately started seeking my attention. Because I was so busy she caught me off guard, but I did put away my camera just in case (dw I made sure before that the rest of my group had a visual on my belongings as I already caught her looking into my bag for worthy items). She asked me to sign this petition for deaf people just like the lady in the video but the form looked different and she didn't pretend to be deaf, so I wasn't so quick to recognise it as a scam. She also distracted me with a story about how she came from Bosnia and how I liked Paris. As she asked me to sign, and not to donate, I started filling the form (obviously with fake data) until we reached the money box and I realised what it was. I told her I didn't have any cash, so she offered to walk me to the nearest ATM. I made my self ready to go, and walked...... not to the ATM but to the rest of my group, joined their circle and told them to keep all of our bags and stuff in the middle and ignore the lady. She kept trying to get our attention a few times but realised she lost and eventually walked away. If looks could kill, I was dead now. The pictures I made at the Opera turned out great though! :)

How could tourists, and everyone, not know about things like this? Should be warning signs in every bus, train, plane etc terminal. Practical defense, such as where to store a wallet and all that, should be taught in school. Doesn't take that long to learn this stuff yet the pickpockets and scammers abound.

I actually hung out with gypsy's once. They let me stay in their camper because it was getting late at night and it was like middle of nowhere. I slept in this corner area. The husband wanted me to sleep in their bed but the wife laid the smack down. I was completely naive that ugh yeah that was a bad idea. They fed me and during the night were drinking a lot, random people would stop by as they were sorta the impromptu bar? It was really weird. Overall though woke up next morning and headed out, not a single thing stolen from me. I don't understand gypsy's but that one family in that one situation saw some random traveler and offered a place to stay and fed me. I'd imagine you've got good gypsies and not so good ones.

Actually I have seen Paris police activity surrounding the scammers. When I recorded my previous gold ring scam video I definitely saw police on mopeds stopping scammers and at least questioning them (I did not remain in the area long enough to see if the police arrested the scammers).
