Gonna be honest, I’m a viola and I love the jokes they make (they are very accurate when compared to my orchestra). _B u u u t_ I’ve notice some comments that seem to genuinely hate violas and it’s making me concerned. Like, I’ll find people who seem to actually have a pure hatred for prepubescent violins and I don’t understand why. Just... _why????_ Like I’ve said, they’re just violins hitting puberty this they don’t talk much so why do you hate us so Edit: I should have said violist but I refuse to change it because I’ve played viola so long that I’ve become one with my instrument

My 8yo daughter plays viola as her second instrument (piano as the first) She switched from violin after 1.5 years of study after she heard the sound of viola. She told me viola and herself both got nice deep voice and both like playing supporting role in the team. It’s her instrument! My daughter’s orchestra mates did laugh at her and called her third violin 🎻. But she’s a super focused kid and ignores those comments. Her violin teacher says her intonation is excellent. She has perfect pitch like Eddy. She’s a Twosetviolin fan as well.

You have a lot of integrity & inner strength to endure that undeserved heavy burden! Violists really have to put up with an unfair load of jokes more than any other orchestral instrument! I'm a violinist & if the "shoe were on the other foot," I wouldn't do that well with it! I'm a bit surprised not more has been made with the proverbial "killing cats" with high-pitched violin screeching. I would think most anyone just learning violin, including myself, have driven their family who is bearing their awful sounds every day, especially when it gets high. Like making people listen to fingernails on a chalkboard more than 15 min every day. In college, i became more curious & serious about the viola & decided to learn it & play it in the orchestra. I loved the experience & realized i didn't know anything about the viola. How it should be played totally different than a violin as its role is different for a reason. That you can't & never should "think in" & play 'violin' on a viola! That's not the point at all. Just how they say the best way to learn another language is by getting to a point where you're 'thinking in' becoming immersed in or saturated with that other language & its context within that culture. The person needs to stop after a while, thinking & translating through their primary language in order to truly know the 2nd one. Much respect to you!

I'm a viola & a Twoset fan, and yeah, though I too love viola jokes sometimes it gets a bit much. I mean, not Twoset, really, but some of their fans just don't know where to stop. Anyway, a while back, inspired by the recorder gang, I made a compilation video of viola performances of those pieces Twoset used in their video, if anyone wants to hear what they really sound like. :) And recently I made another video, hopefully smoother (I suck with editing) of viola duets with various instruments.

Tbh Twoset doesn't actually hate the viola, they recognize its importance but I feel like it's gone on too far to the point where it actually makes people hate the viola? As in, hate hate. People who've never heard it before. On a TwoSet video I saw a comment making a joke about violists killing themselves and others rejoicing...

I play both violin and viola, and guess what? I've found that viola sounds better and its harder to play. Maybe u think its easy just cuz of the orchestral parts, but there are things called concertos.

The Viola wasn't the first in the orchestra, but the Viola is the oldest of the modern string instruments that are played in orchestras. Mozart also preferred to play the Viola over the violin because the Viola was closer to the human voice. Plus, when the Viola was first introduced into the orchestra, many other string instruments started to be called Viola, and from that point on, I'm not sure if string instruments were call Viola before or after the Viola

If not, you're missing out on a lot of great content ! 😊 For example, there are more than 100 videos of them playing seriously and almost 45 where they sight-read and/or practice pieces. Over the years, they've also made dozens of music video clips and covers. And what about their educational content, where they talk about violin and classical music in general ? It take SOOOOO much more practice to play the Viola. The violin is so easy, especially if you want to make a good sound out of it, unlike the VIOLA. I'm a Violist and I have no hate towards the Viola, it's just a hard instrument.

PLEASE WATCH YOUR STEP.* Dear violists who might be reading this, I know some of TwoSet(and maybe other peeps) jokes might go to far, but please don't stop playing. You know jokes are jokes and if you let it make you feel offended/insulted, then you lost. How? 'Cause you are the player, and you know more about yourself and your instrument better than anyone else. And even if all the voices around you manipulate you and tell you all kinds of stuff, you shouldn't listen, especially' cause you know what the truth is. Never give up on playing. And just enjoy the humor, even if it is kinda offensive. Take control of your feelings and let it out by playing, etc. But when it comes to the point that it's too much, take all you feel about it and go practice. Let them see that there is beauty in viola as well. Prove them wrong. And if they don't listen, just smile and continue playing. Because at the end of the day, the only voice that you need to hear, the only voice that matters, is your own. Also, dear non-violists/quick to judge/jump to conclusion peeps, if you don't know what other people are going through, please don't just criticize/bully them right away just because others are doing it. You never know, the people you were discriminating might be bleeding to death and you're still throwing salt/lemon, etc. to their wounds(this is metaphorical XD). And most importantly, if you're only doing it just to make yourself feel better, stop it. You know it doesn't help. Just step back for a while and talk to yourself instead of venting it out on innocent peeps. But if you don't know how, there are always people willing to help you. We're here. Ps. Bad example. But, I agree. In my orchestra, the 1st violins don't even deserve the melody most of the time. However, we (The Violas) on the other hand are like, always on time, correct pitch, correct bowing, correct note, correct song, we are almost perfect most of the time, yet the 2nd VIOLINS (the worst section in my orchestra, like seriously they are never on time, pitch, note, song, bowing, together, and they never have good posture, ect. ect.)STILL have the NERVE to make FUN of the VIOLAS!!!!!

To be honest, as a piano player, I hate the viola jokes. Ling Ling jokes are a way to poke fun at comparing yourself to other people, practice 40 hours every day is a hyperbolic way of saying work hard, and all the other jokes have their own meanings that make sense. But viola jokes are just unfunny. Literally you're just saying fuck viola. It's not funny, it's just weird.

The reality is that the violinists are just jealous of the violas. Violinists are like coachroaches. They're everywhere. Meanwhile, violas are like a rare beautiful butterfly. If a fissure suddenly opened up and devoured half the violins, the orchestra would just shrug as it's easy to find replacements. If it happened to the violas, we'd be breaking out the mining equipment.
