David has done an excellent job of walking through the minefield of a current event that is the war in Ukraine. This is a very important discussion about what is happening and why it not just about tanks, because tanks don't operate in a vacuum, they operate in a fluid three dimensional environment, where a threat can come from anywhere. David has also done an excellent job of walking the fine line between real results, concealing potential future opportunities and peering through the fog of propaganda. No easy task. Keep up with the good work David, and I am looking forward to the next episode of Tank Chats. Mark from Melbourne Australia

FACTS Russia had been reducing the size of their armed forces we know these units were short on manpower it was a show of force admittedly a bad idea they won't repeat. Javelin and Stinger have been a failure Ukrainians report at least half failed to fire or explode. US military reports show even TRAINED US troops only manage hits 19% of the time with Javlin not destruction just a hit. The NLAW has been shown as near useless often failing much like the Brimstone missile declared near useless by the UK. A trick of the Ukrainians is to film the same vehicle from multiple angles claiming every view is a new vehicle destroyed you would know this unfortunately your subject to UK propaganda by the JBC Israels mouthpiece in Europe. Other than that keep up the good work eventually Brits will realise they have been hoodwinked into supporting Nazis guessing you had no idea Britain created Right Sector 1 and 2 using UK Nazis and America created AZOV using US Nazis who have admitted it. Theres ADIR and many other NAZI groups hundreds of thousands who also admitted the UKRAINE Government told them to execute and commit atrocious against Russian soldiers as propaganda. ZZelinsky will no doubt get a neck tie for war crimes as will most of his government and military officials that survive. Your Parents Grandparents and Churchill must be so proud of how Britain now ruled by the TRIBE supports their dreaded enemies Nazis and how docile the SERFS in the UK are about it.

The only insight that has not been clearly acknowledged is that Russia grabbed exactly what it really wanted in the first 3 months of the war,,All this talk about taking over Ukraine is a total media fantasy, Like the Russians want a Nationalist Western backed insurgency for the next 50 years, instead there is a sizable pro-Russian ethnic group in the occupied areas, Now it is just a war of attrition to a settlement while the world suffers for it. About that simple.

It also undermines his credibility as saying "Cope Cages" indicates that he's unaware of the long history of improvised armor, including in NATO militaries (i.e. steel plates on the sides of Humvees, slat armor on the sides of Strykers, etc..), and how it's not supposed to address top-down ATGM's, but also building-fired RPG's, drone-dropped grenades, and more. But he subsequently admitted that the Tank Museum is acting as a propaganda outlet for Ukraine.

My birthday treat as a kid was a day out at Bovington Tank Museum in the 1950's and early 60's Thank you for the presentation concise, knowledgeable, but easy to appreciate. For the future tank designers are going to have to include space for an extra man to operate a series of eternally mounted drones that can give the commander a visual oversight of the surrounding and suicide attack drones, that will allow an element of stealth before the main armament comes into play and maybe ammunition that is a carrier for attack drones. I also think that a stubby smooth bore tube that fire a case style round loaded with a large quantity of steel ball bearings that is mounted so that the tube can be swung like a shotgun will be needed to defend the tank against incoming drones firing at short range 50 - 100 yards operated by movement sensors and using the trail and spread of shot to hit and disable an attacking drone. Funny having been so interested in tanks as a kid I joined the RAF, but that's another story.

Such a disgusting armchair general inverting reality to avoid the obvious conclusion that even if what you said was true, the Russians obviously have a better grasp of combined arms since they're, you know, winning. And yeah, try making a breakthrough with tanks against fortified positions against any number of the threats modern tanks face when those very same maneuvers depend on an element of surprise very rare on the modern battlefield where everything from drones to satellites can track large, concentrated vehicle movements and send it to people to plug up the gap. Idiots like you and the abk museums just do not get it for the life of you: any modern conventional war between two competent and comparable forces is quickly going to resemble more WW1 style trench warfare or the mid to later stages of WW's eastern front than operation Barbarossa in which case maneuver is fundamentally less important and less harnessable by either side than firepower and attrition. I would honestly love to see any western armed force in either the position of the Russ or Ukies try blitzkrieg on the steppes of Ukraine and see how far they get and what losses they take and how quickly.

All the time, he explains how amazing the Ukrainians fight, but forgot to mention the small detail of Ukraine losing the war. He is talking about the old outdated doctrine Russians use and new-modern western doctrine Ukraine adopted....but well, Ukrainians still losing the war. So maybe the doctrine is not so good? Pretty much every claim he made is contradicted by the reality on the ground. You could see this video as a satire to Russia/Ukrainian war.

A lot of people tend to cling to the idea that Russia must be incredibly stupid or tanks must be absolutely awful as an explanation for why Ukraine has held on this long. I don't think enough credit is given to the Ukrainians who've proven stalwart, innovative and overall superior tactically in how they're fighting this. Much like Poland before WW II, they're managing to punch well above their weight and I think they deserve recognition for it. Of course, Poland did eventually fall but that took a combined effort of Germany and the USSR and they held out for an unbelievable amount of time with no external aid. I think we're seeing a similar thing with Ukraine in how they're managing to hold on. Never underestimate a people defending their homeland.

6:55 Imagine the morale boost of just instead being treated as another number on paper, the commander turns to you and says "What do you think?" Having a hand in your own attack plan must make you feel so much more invested in making sure it goes well. Especially if there are other relying on you. One thing I've heard over and over again is the value of Non-Commissioned officers in the Western militaries that the Russian military lacks

Exactly. Even if the troopers have barely any clue what they are doing, just having a voice prevents extreme stupidity attacks, and allows them to feel in their most desperate moments that, "yup I played a part calculating this, but boy are we bad at calculating",rather than, "my comanaders sent me to die" and fight on.

@@dtly50 the most successful attacks historically are where the commanders have taken the time to propagate the plans to all levels of the assault forces, to walk them through it, to engage them in feedback, and to take on board constructive criticism. @DIREWOLFx75
@DIREWOLFx75 Жыл бұрын
"Russian conscript morale" That there alone should tell you ALL you need to know. Because there ARE NO RUSSIAN CONSCRIPTS IN UKRAINE. None, zero, null. "and forget this is a finely balanced war" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... Almost exactly a year ago now, i commented that Russia had won the war. Because that was bloody obvious to anyone bothering to look at unbiased information. Russia spent most of the war up until November outnumbered 3 to 1 or 2 to 1. And yet, even during their daring maneuverings in the first 2 months of the war, there was not even a single week that i could find any evidence that their advantage in killratio was ever worse than 3 to 1 in Russia's advantage. Right now, Russian KIAs are probably somewhere around 10 to 14 thousand. Ukraine KIAs are probably somewhere between 300 and 500 thousand. Russian POWs are less than 400, and that includes the ones tortured to death and videos of the deeds proudly uploaded online. While the number of Ukranians taken POWs amount to around 30 thousand. Russia is confirmed to have lost less than 30 aircraft, total number is probably less than 40. Ever since July, they fly 100-400 missions per day. On average, 0-2 missionkilled or lost aircraft per week. Ukraine is confirmed to have lost over 300, total number is very uncertain but probably over 400. Since May, they fly 0-5 missions per day and usually take 50-100% losses whenever they try to fly. Ukraine used to fire 4-6 thousand artillery per day. Now, they're running out, so closer to 3 thousand most days probably. Russia fires around 20 thousand artillery per day. Some days, much more, topping out close to 70 thousand at one point last summer. In comparison, USA used around 60 thousand TOTAL during its whole invasion of Iraq in the 90s. Russia has fired more SAMs than all of Nato together have ever used, maybe even more than all together have ever built. Russia has used more cruise missiles per month than Nato have used in any single conflict. And may in total have used more than USA has ever built. And Russia is still stocking up on its best weapons, in case the psychopaths in Washingon have Nato get involved directly. In the last year, they have also nearly double the number of Su-57s in active service, possibly more if their upgrading of prototypes to serial production versions have been completed. They delivered 300 brand new T-90s, latest model, in January, after they ramped up massproduction sometime in June last year, and hereafter they expect to produce up to around a thousand per year. How exactly is that "finely balanced"? Russia attacked with less than 1/3 of the numbers of troops of Ukraine, against the largest set of fortifications since the Maginot line and Ukraine had since 2014 been equipped with over 10 years worth of production of pretty much everything Nato could provide, most of which was used up or destroyed during the first 3 months. And yet Russia today achieves 10 to 1 killratios in their favor almost casually. During the Kherson offensive, that went up to something between 100-200 to 1. 55 thousand troops attacking 15 thousand, 12 thousand KIA were COUNTED as being left on the battlefields by the Ukrainians. Total number of KIAs probably 2-3 times that and the entire 55 thousand strong force essentially stopped existing after the "offensive". While Russian losses amounted to a few dozen. BALANCED?

Cant wait to see that on a museum placard in a decades time This example is fitted with a makeshift "Cope Cage" as it became known to outside observers. The intention of the device is to mitigate the impact of top attack missiles by interrupting the jet of a shaped charge warhead. Cope cage was derived from the early 2020s internet slang term "copium" or Lying to yourself in order to cope with something. In this context it largely derided the crews, who were seen to be hastily cobbling together defensive devices to improve morale in the face of greater than expected losses . Further it spoke to the pervading sense of vulnerability that tanks were perceived to have at the time, against modern anti tank weapons and the expected lack of effectiveness of these constructions. While these devices may have experienced some success as spaced armour, their hasty, non uniform construction, as well as the variety of anti tank weapons deployed against them will have led to mixed results in the field.
