Last year marked 10 years since the Boeing 787 ‘Dreamliner’ family entered service with Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways (ANA). The next-generation widebody is known for being one of the most modern and efficient aircraft in the long-haul market. However, it manages to achieve its efficiency without the use of winglets. But why doesn’t it have them?

I was flying with Qatar Airways once and had 2 days to go until flying. I just wanted to check my flight status and went to manage booking and when I saw the aircrafy type, I was screaming in happiness. I was also transiting in Doha and the previous two flight had 777-300ER's and the flight to Doha was a 787 and the flight to my final destination was an A350-1000. This was the best day of my life and will never forget it.

The first time I saw the 787 wing in flight from my window seat, it looked so beautiful like a work of art. I also love the push button window shading (as long as the flight crew do not override and keep all the windows dark).

@@JAYfromTHEworld True but I did not appreciate it when the flight crew of my flight from Denver to Tokyo, which left at around 1:30 in the afternoon, darkened the windows for the first six to seven hours of the trip, even though it was still light out. ANA flight crews never do that for some reason.

@@alooga555 common courtesy to close your shades after meal service. Doesn’t matter if the flight departs at 8am or 10pm.

I think the raked wingtips for the 787 Dreamliner looks pretty awesome in my opinion. But again, i have never flown on a widebody aircraft in my life

I actually like the raked back wings better than winglets. It's sleeker looking, and very classy!

Has flown many times on the Dreamliner, and flying again 2. April. Very confortable airplane, mainly because of the low cabin altitude

@@erickscott5732 As an example, the B737 when flying at 40.000 ft. the air pressure in the cabin is equal to the air pressure at 3000 meter. Meaning the air density/ pressure you would feel, as if you were standing at a mountain top 3000 meter above sea level. The cabin altitude/ pressure on the Dreamliner when flying at 40.000 ft. is only 1500 meter, witch mean you will not feel pressure in your ears, and you will have more oxygen to breathe.

Winglets are good when the wing span is limited. For the same wing span a winglet is more efficient. But if wing span is not limited then the raked wingtip is better, after all a winglet doesn't produce an upward facing lift vector.

All the winglets do is minimize the wing tip vortices. They don’t really provide any lift, and barely pay for themselves. The raked wingtip is much, much better. HOWEVER, the -400 is easy to pick out of a crowd!

@@AmbientMorality Winglets create enough lift to counter their own weight. The main purpose is to control turbulence coming off the wing, which reduces drag.

@@Ampersandrascott Yeah, I didn't word that well. For a given alpha a winglet allows the wing to generate more lift across its entire span. On an actual plane, of course, that means that the angle of attack can be decreased. But the same thing is true of a raked wingtip, which also allows the wing to generate more lift across its entire span (for a given alpha).

I've flown on a 787, and I was impressed with it. I'm a Commercial Pilot and have flown both as a pilot and as a passenger. Air NZ I flew the 789 and with LAN I flew as a passenger on one of their 788's.

@Bi Han The raked wingtips work better than winglets/sharklets because there is less drag, in thus helping the 788/9 with the 20% less emissions. Boeing chose this over winglets because there are less parts to put on the wings, and also the raked wings work better to reduce the wingtip vortices.

i have flown on SG airlines 787-10 manila to Singapore and back last June of 2019. That was our last overseas trip before COVID.

Vietnam Airlines have about 7 or 8 DreamLiners and the pleasure of frequently flying from London to Ha Noi is a fantastic experience.

I have never flown on the 787🙁. Hopefully will break this cycle. But the wings arch while in flight where the tips are almost in the positions of the winglets😃.

I flew on the dreamliner a few days ago from Bogota to Paris Such a comfortable plane I've never flown on any other widebody and I wonder how they compare to the 787

Even Embraer uses the raked wingtip for the E2 whilst Airbus is yet to try it (A350 uses blended winglets)

I was browsing through KZbin suggestions came across Iraqi Airways, so Google for more information I was surprised by various types they have used for there fleet. The one type caught my attention, Imagine boarding an IL76 for your next flight. Can be a topic for your next video.

I believe this design was first used by McDonnell Douglas on the MD-80 series of aircraft.

The raked wing tip started at NASA about 30 years ago with the scimitar wingtip. It was actually proposed for the C-5 in the 1960s but the Air Force thought it was too delicate.

“A properly designed wing doesn’t need winglets.” John Roncz. He was the aerodynamicist that designed the Routan Voyager and a bunch of other things with Burt Routan. Winglets came to the fore when oil went up. A design house in Seattle filled with ex-Boeing engineers figured them out. Not all wings can accept the retrofit as spar loads and construction come into play. When Boeing first started offering winglets as retrofits, they wanted to charge a sizable percentage of the calculated fuel savings but got very few buyers. When the airlines, their bread and butter got stressed by fuel, Boeing finally relented to pretty much the cost of producing the refit kits. Interesting tidbit. At United Airlines, the performance engineers calculated the winglets on the 747-400 were useless and wanted to remove them for maintenance and weight savings. This idea was torpedoed by marketing who said they had poured fair money into convincing business travelers that the winglets were the sign of the latest and most advanced aircraft engineering. The winglets stayed.

Racked wing tips, found on the 777 and 787 are equally as effective as winglets found on the 737 and 747.

Yes but it allows the wing to have a bigger area which is better. Even Embraer uses it for the E2 in 3 different sizes for the 3 variants of the family

I have on two variants, one on domestic and two international routes The B788, I was on China Southern Airlines flight CZ3417 bearing the rego of B-2788 on 31/03/15 from ZGGG to ZUUU. The B789, I was on Japan Airlines flight JL771 and JL772, for JL772 on 06/01/20 from YSSY to RJAA bearing the rego JA863J, and JL771 on 21/01/20 from RJAA to YSSY bearing the rego of JA865J

"Raked wingtips" can be categorized as "winglets". Similar to bent-up or canted-up winglets, those raked wingtips are also not a main wing component with slats and aileron. They are an extension for aerodynamic reasons = to reduce induced drag. So they are a "flat winglet".

Will avoid the 787 anytime I can. The three time I was on it they blacked out the windows without any recourse for me or others. I could not look out the window which is something I paid extra to do on an AFTERNOON flight over the Atlantic. I would rather fly a 777 or 747 or A350, actually ANYTHING over a 787 if they are going to blackout the windows against my will.

Because the horizontal stabilizers are not loaded much, in fact the tail lift, for stability reasons is negative
