@Nerdist There is a simpler science. If you've ever used (I have) a plasma torch for cutting steel, aluminum, titanium, etc. you know that you can but the material all day without gloves and yet your hands don't burn. The distance from the torch tip to your finger on the trigger is less than 3 inches. The air is of such low density that the heat doesn't transfer effectively. Of course you will burn your hands if you touch the material you've cut within a couple seconds, or if the tip touches the metal and causes a spray of molten metal. Plasma torches cut around 20,000 degrees so probably close to lightsaber temperature.

telekinesis. this is completely a theory with no backing but I think benders just have a understanding of telekinesis and depending on where you were born you'd be able to move earth or bend air or combust oxygen into fire or move water and avatars are like savants who are naturally gifted with an ability to do all instead of just being locked into what ever they were around but that's just a theory

The shot from the blaster is the Tibanna gas brought to a condition of plasma. Its containment requires a magnetic field. The magnetic field of a sword pushes away a magnetic field of a shot.

Wait, shouldn't that make the Jedi fly as far away as the blast then. Imagine Kenobi flying away like the lady at then end of Django unchained everytime he deflects a blast :P. Though in all likelihood, that's probably part of the basics of form 4 (?). Sense the blast, apply counter-force with the Force (heh) to not go Wile E. Coyote, then deflect the blast.

if youve got enough thrust i guess you dont really need proper wings -.- anyway, about the wings in space: the one thing you could argue here is mass distribution in regards to creating a more stable rotation axis. at least for why you would bother having wings at all while in space. it still wouldnt explain why you would want to get your X-wings in attack mode for assaulting a death star tho :/ maybe in the case of the X-wing its just that the laser cannons are mounted at the tips of the wings and you want them to be in proper X-configuration for the targeting software to work

For what it's worth, my head canon is that the wing shape is primarily about balancing weapon layout with aerodynamics for atmo flight. X-wings and B-wings have variable geometry because it allows them to change the position of their weapons, which gives them some sort of advantage in-universe (even though tie-fighters have to small blasters and seem to work just fine...). Instead of using VG, the A-wing has blasters on swivel mounts (IIRC) but it's compact lifting body design would probably give it great handling in both atmo and space.

So if the saber blade is made of high temperature plasma trapped within a super strong magnetic field, what happens if you try to cut metal? What happens if you turn it on anywhere near iron? What would have happened to Qui-Gon Jinn's lightsaber if those blast doors were actually made of steel? #needsmorescience
@nightfuryyassamaru1683
@nightfuryyassamaru1683 8 жыл бұрын
Probably that polarities are fundamentally different, making "normal" magnetic field interactions invalid. That or if my understanding of magnetism is right, two different magnetic forces attract each other and join under one single field. So if the lightsaber and the door come into contact, their magnetic forces "merge" together and heat from the plasma blade can be transmitted to the door, hence cutting through/melting the shit out of it.

Could be an attempt at making it look better, along with the fear factor. Rebel and Republic ships show us that rounded and/or junky looks aren't very scary. Practically everything in earth's past has had looks put into consideration. I once watched a tribe in Burkina Faso (Africa) making iron tools for the first time in 60 years, out of ore from the ground. The elders were building a temporary clay furnace, and they began smoothing out the clay. The camera man, himself related to this tribe, asked why they were smoothing it out. The elder said "So it looks nice". That sums up a good tenth or more of decisions made in history. Things which look nicer are simply better. People with good looks have good genes and are objectively, more likely to be good people and less likely to carry disease or genetic problems. And an army with better looking equipment and more colorful banners is more imposing and has more of a sense of pride and unity. The next rock you pick up will probably be decided -in part- by how it looks compared to the others lol.

Another thing to take into account is the placement of the armaments on the wingtips. X-Wings set their attack profile into that x-shape to spread out the 4 blasters for a better shot cone increasing the chance of hitting a target. Now some of the other ships they use that dont have weapons of their wings like the B-wing which also can deploy in attack position, they have far less use unless in atmosphere. Unless like someone else said they have some kind of thrusters on the tips to increase maneuverability or shield emitters for better protective coverage.

In the Star Wars franchise they often refer to the lightsabers as personal lightsabers, like "luke's lightsaber" and so on. So, we could say that lightsabers only don't hurt its owner, that makes sense if you think of everyone being impressed when Rey took Luke's and not getting hurt, is like the lightsaber recognized Rey as Luke or the "spirit" of Luke within Rey.

To answer the bit towards the end there - at least on an X-wing (And also a V-wing and TIE Fighter and Jedi Interceptor and Clone Fighter [Episode III]) - the wings aren't wings (tho they might function as that in atmospheric flight) - they're there so that excess heat from lazer cannon fire and increased engine strain due to maneuvering can be radiated into space more easily than if there were less surface area available. That's all those are for. A TIE fighter, without the heat radiation panels, could literally just be that orb cockpit assembly, if they so desired.
@xee456789
@xee456789 8 жыл бұрын
The wings could also be used for maneuvering in space, if you outfit them with thrusters so that they fire to make the ship move in space as if it were still in an atmosphere. The wings would also help since it's basically being used as a lever arm to increase the force on the orientation of the ship. Then the different wing designs would make even more sense. Also i agree over all, the magnetic field keeps particles from actually interacting with the plasma inside, and only more solid things actually pass through the magnetic field to interact with it, so it doesn't heat the air since the air particles are too easily displaced by the magnetic field meaning there is only energy transfer when the blade touches a solid or a dense liquid.

In your analysis you talk about magnetic fields. How would these fields interact in a light sabre duel/fight? Like would they hold their integrity or try to merge, or lose integrity, or did the movies have in more or less right according to your description? Also, LOVING the series! Please keep up the good work!

Not to mention, if one were to look at the Star Wars wikia, the blade of a lightsabre is actually the force made physical form, generated from the force-powered crystal at the heart of the lightsabre hilt or projector. Lightsabres aren't actually radioactive or fusion plasma. They are force blades, or Force Sabres.

So, it has probably been said somewhere here, but I'll toss it in. - As an avid Star Wars nut, the following has been stated about lightsabers. The blade produces no noticeable heat until contacting an object. Or at least the heat is negligible. The lightsaber, when activated, produces a strong gyroscopic effect, which makes them hard to use without proper training, and the senses and focus of a trained Force-user. Mostly because if it wobbles in a swing or movement and hits a body part you're gonna have a bad time. So, your model and explanation on the way the blade works fits, in regards to temperature. The most likely model for what the actual blade of a lightsaber is would be a magnetically contained arc of highly energetic plasma. And this seems to fit the bill. And I would surmise that the gyroscopic effect is a side effect of the magnetic containment of the plasma arc. This would also explain why a lightsaber interacts with blaster bolts. They're not a laser, but directed plasma packets and could bounce off of a lightsaber blade, or be absorbed. Adding to this, based on the diagrams and anatomy of some lightsabers, there seems to be a component that generates charged particles. I would estimate that this could be used to generate a plasma. - So hypothetically this all actually works and fits together. The problem comes with efficiency and power generation, as well as miniaturization, and containing the plasma. Basically it all holds up though. *thumbs up!*

The shape of the wings would also affect their moment of inertia, and so how well they can rotate in certain directions, even in vacuum. It's a balancing act between rotational mass, and rotational thrust vectors.

Regarding the end statement about 'wings', I'm gonna go out on one and put forth that in a galaxy awash in anti gravity technology with the ability to suspend entire cities in the clouds dozens of miles above a planets surface, smaller (typically fighter type) space craft don't need wings for flight in planetary atmospheres. They just use anti gravity and intense thrust to push their way along or dead stop and float. 'Wings' is an archaic term used to discribe a craft's basic hull form and weapons configuration.

Can you do an episode about how the quantum mechanics "Double-slit experiment" potentially means that psychic powers could potentially exist in the real world the same way they do in fiction? I mean, there's no direct evidence that that's the case, but the fact that a particle doesn't really 'exist' until it's observed sure seems to leave the door open for such possibilities.

The wings also position the engines and weapons differently to give different flight characteristics even in space, and different attack strategies.

Having different shapes wings, with thrusters at each tip, would allow for different ranges of maneuverability in space. Vary the amount of thrust to a single point and you are now rotating along that axis. Because science!

I don't know why people don't think that maybe there's a forcefield around it? You know, the kind you can walk through, but bullets can't penetrate, and perhaps heat can't escape? It would make more sense as the plasma doesn't spew sparks around like a real plasma blade would. Not to mention such forcefields exist, you know, on huge spacecrafts for example (the hangar openings has them to prevent the air from escaping from the landing area). They also use them in the Clone Wars to defend the Lurmen, and the clones use them to defend against the Gungan throwing rocks in the Shadow Menace.

he forgot one small detail, inside the tokamak is vacuum, because if there was air inside it, the plasma would dump all of its energy into the air and stop the fusion reaction. the light saber would be the same, the energy of the saber would radiate through the air around the saber and burn the users hand anyway. I think the only way of it to work is consider that the fields also keep the air from touching the "laser", so it only burns when something pass through the field touching the "laser"

Regarding wings on spacecraft - Could you maneuver a spacecraft if it had a fixed engine and you moved some kind of dense liquid ballast (maybe fuel for the engine?) into the wings to dynamically change its center of mass? If you wanted to straighten the craft out of a "skid" could you spin the liquid in a central container to gyroscopicly straighten the craft relative to its velocity?

I kind of thought that was why jedi wore thick robes even on tatooine. Anyone that has used a plasma cutter before knows that they can give you a sun burn if you aren't wearing long sleeves and if those sleeves aren't thick enough a spark could burn through it and your skin.
