About 6 years ago I was teaching a horseback riding trail ride class, and I was walking while my students rode. We took a road that we hadn't used before in the country. It was two days past hunting season. As we walked down a dirt road, we noticed something that sickened all of us. It was in the woods. There was what looked like someone's hunting camp with beer cans all over the place and 4 deer legs planted in the dirt by the road, like the deer was just standing there, but there was no body. The hunters probably took most of the deer, but planted its hooves and leg like there was a deer there. I bet those beer cans made them do that.

@herbb854711 ай бұрын
@johnmead8437 The wild hogs are not purposely being allowed to populate to the point they become pests. Wild hogs are an invasive species that are almost impossible to control. They reproduce and grow at a very rapid rate. One sow can have up to three litters a year of 8 to 15 piglets each litter. Sows can reproduce by the time they are a year old. At least 75% must be killed every year just to keep the population from increasing. And they are not easy to kill in large numbers. Very smart people are developing new methods of trapping numbers of hogs, but the hogs are very intelligent and often learn how to avoid those traps. Hunting, by itself, can help control numbers, but it can rarely contain the population as it is rarely possible to kill enough animals in a given area.

Some of the information in this video is correct. Most? Not so much. Wild pigs (aka hogs) can be found all over America. Predominantly in the south and California. Wild hogs were brought here in the 1500s for food. The Russian breeds were brought in the 1900s for sport hunting. Todays breeds are a cross of the European and Russian breeds. The hogs are edible and processed for meat. Hogs will eat most anything but... Being in the wild they mostly eat forest plants and animals. When they do raid farms, the eat the same crops we as humans eat. As for disease? ALL meat has the propensity to infect if processed improperly. I have hunted for many types of meat from turkey, ducks and geese, to squirrel, rabbit, raccoon, to hog, deer, bear. Not to mention fishing for crab, mudbugs, salt/fresh water fish, etc. Processing and storing correctly is vital. Bottom line? Do your own research. Hunters never let their deer go to waste as venison is one of the best meats. Most wild hogs are eaten. Those wild hogs shot during those helicopter hunts are slaughtered and the meat donated to food shelves. Wild pork is very popular. It doesn't take that long to cut up a hog. One just has to cook wild pork to 160 deg to make sure one kills any diseases the hog may have been carrying. Wild hog meat is also leaner and healthier than store bought pork.

I think it's a no brainer that the meat from wild pigs and deer can be consumed, regardless of what they eat. It's just a matter of how the meat is processed and cooked thoroughly. 200,000 tons of these meat can feed the entire population of US for lunch and dinner for a day. Even if not fit for humans, surely they are fit to be processed into pet food. Here in Malaysia where I live, wild pigs and deer are specialties, and quite expensive too. I'd suggest that hunting and trapping (but not poisoning) be carried out, the meat processed and sent to Asian countries chiefly China, whose population lives pork and venison.

Most of the information in this video is false. I've never met anyone in the US that shot a deer and just left it. Hunters and farmers in the US eat the deer they shoot. Most of the nuisance hogs that are shot are either eaten by the people that killed it. Trapped hogs can be taken to USDA inspected slaughterhouses and are then donated to churches, local families, homeless shelters, etc. There are organizations working to use feral hogs to help feed the hungry. My friend works in pest control in Florida. When they trap hogs, the employees are allowed to process any hogs they would like to keep for food, and anything they don't keep gets donated to a big cat rescue nearby for feeding their lions and tigers. I believe some areas have programs with zoos as well.

In Hawaii, they hunt wild pigs with dogs. When they cook them, they are cooked in an imu. They dig a pit and make a teepee like structure out of firewood. Then stack rocks on the outside of the firewood so only a small hole remains at the top. They pour charcoal lighter in the hole and ignite it. When the wood burns away, the heated rocks end up lining the pit. Then they cover the rocks with banana leaves, wrap the pig up in burlap and chicken wire and lay it on the banana leaves. They then cover the pig with more leaves and cover the whole thing with dirt. After about 8 hours, they dig it up. The meat just falls off of the bone.

Pork should have an internal temperature of 165 degrees to kill any bacteria or parasites. I had a friend who worked in a meat processing plant. Trichinosis is pork related. Salmonella is chicken/ fowl related. Meat that is not cooked thoroughly can be extremely dangerous.

*INFO* Deer in the USA are very well controlled, there are only (X) amount of hunting licenses given out each year (depending on the current population of deer) (Also depending on area and age you aren't allowed to hunt does (female deer)) (same with bears, moose, elk and so on - getting a moose license is like winning the lottery as they don't normally get out of control) Wild pig are a problem though and can be hunted with out a license (and are *NOT* always hunted with hunting dogs)

I live on the East coast - Maryland. Deer in the mid-Atlantic states are definitely *not* well controlled. We are overrun with deer and rabbits because natural predators were wiped out completely.
@luxitos28679 ай бұрын
Gotta agree with another poster here. I live in southwestern VA in the Appalachian mountains and the deer population is a problem because their natural predators were driven out long ago. (Big mountain cats are just now starting to make a comeback and the TN Wildlife Dept. have confirmed the rumors of sightings of them in the area as they have started migrating down here from up North) When I drive home to my apartment between an elementary school and a former hospital, I have to be careful because deer are constantly crossing the road at night. And don't even get me started about the valley I grew up in just a couple miles down the road. They are everywhere and I've nearly hit one many, many times down there. We were always taught about watching out for deer and how hitting one could absolutely wreck your vehicle.
@toorimakun9 ай бұрын
@@luxitos2867 Hmm.... Maryland and VA are blue states aren't they?.... maybe you don't have enough hunters. I know a guy in WA that is never allowed to hunt again because he shot a deer that had been hit by a truck and was dying on the side of the road.
@luxitos28679 ай бұрын
@toorimakun VA is a purple state and SWVA is extremely red. I come from a large family of hunters. Rifle, compound bow, etc. They did it all. It's more disinterest that did it in than anything, it seems. I hated hunting, fishing, etc. And it was reflected in the younger generations. They weren't interested in it. Sure, I see why it is necessary (especially with deer) but I do not enjoy it, at all. You just don't see the younger crowd clamoring to go hunting.

"Why don't Americans eat wild pigs instead of killing them?" What does this mean exactly? Like, just cut off the legs and let them live as blobs? Hogs are good eating but require extra processing compared to a farm pig; it's common enough that they are eaten but there's so many that need culling that the meat is often donated in one way or another that doesn't involve the hunter's freezer or the local butcher. The FDA is a large reason for the latter. I live smack in the middle of some of the best deer hunting country in the world and everyone I know eats their deer every time, that's the biggest draw. Roadkill would be eaten more often but people don't like risking tickets from 3 letter agencies, yet again regulations getting in the way of being a hippie.

Lets start with the FACT there are no wolves in California. Montana, Idaho, Wyoming are where the major populations of wolves reside. There are also a few in Utah and Colorado with the largest population in and near Yellowstone National Park. Most of the wild boar are in the pacific and central west with a few sub species across the country. Those in Texas and Arizona and not that good to eat however California and the southern states have a population that has large pigs that go well into the 500 lbs range and most live on the land and not eating trash and garbage. You presentation is full of false misrepresentations. The winter of 2022 wiped out the majority (80%ish)of the deer and elk herds in the Western states. The most foolish comment you made was why don't hunters use the deer that they hunt during the hunting season. The fact is, They do. Hunters eat what they kill.. Know your subject matter.

The difference between wild pigs and deer is deer are a native species and pigs are not. Where we live, it is a crime to kill an animal and just leave it. For the roadkill deer wherever possible, we try to throw them in the truck and feed the dog with it - no waste and prevents scavengers near the road. I understand the need for pest control, but wasting the meat is a crime. At least grind up the meat for dog food or something and the bones for bonemeal for plants. New markets to bring income for hard-hit farmers? Pigs do not make land unsuitable for agriculture. Animals, perhaps, but not farming. Pigs can actually be used to break up fallow land, help control weeds and bugs because they eat both.

The consumption of game is as old as the human presence in the world. Refusing to consume deer and hog meat is based on the fact that it can create an "unfair" competition with the farms and ranches raising all kinds of animals. With the technology we all enjoy today, the raising of wild animals can solve the always present problem of food prices, which are controlled by corporations whom don't have anything in their minds other than making a quick buck. The natives in North America were not only surviving, but thriving by consuming wild bison, deer and any other animal they encounter. The Europeans introduced their farm animals and got rid of anything "uncivilized"; the rest is history. Today we have virtual factories producing meat as a source of protein, and the risk of very dangerous illnesses to humans is always present despite the number of chemicals putting on them; let alone what these farm animals eat. The immense waste of all these wild animals after they have been eliminated is shameful, considering that a lot of people all over the so called developed countries, don't eat enough or properly on a daily basis. Greetings from Toronto.

Goes without saying that we need a rehauling of our Fish and Game laws, because they obviously have not served the nation well at all. We also need high degree of punishment for people importing invasive species. The minute someone sees something they think in interesting on some wild life channel the more they are inclined to seek out ways to get such things imported. for either personal interest or for selling. and all the time is it the case that such people whether independent or so-called professional handlers fail to keep the creatures from escaping and breeding. We are now seeing giant Japanese hornets in both Washington state alaska and of course florida. These absolute HUGE wasps can easily swarm and kill humans. and yet all it takes is one curious brainless idiot to get them shipped in. Or you got the family coming from another country figuring they can stock their local lake or pond with fish from their homeland and next minute your got yet another invasive issue. or how about the moronic aquarium fish owner, who can no longer take care of his fish, and instead of killing them to prevent an outbreak does the worse thing imaginable and setting them loose in local canals, and water ways. If the law saw to such people getting real jail time, 20 years or so, then and only then would the risk of ownership be too great for the punishment's. deterring at least most.

In Virginia, we are destroying deer habitat through residential development. The deer just have no place to go. Behind our house, the trees disappeared in one day due to a clear cutting for housing. In the evening, there was a group of deer standing around in the formerly wooded area, looking bewildered. They had to move on to their evening buffet, my wife's flower garden, in order to survive.

A friend we had met while on contracts in Brussels lived up 206 near that tiny ski area just below NY. He got 6 deer with the front bumper. One night wife and I were driving from another buddies place a few mile N of I80 to our place in the small township of Mt. Olive. It was snowing with limited visibility when she asks, "Where do the deer go in winter?" As I start to reply a large doe bounces out of the berm to our right and lands maybe 2' in front of her brand new car. WHAM but it has a broken front leg, some injuries and takes cover in the entry of Narden Fragrances part of an international trade zone. When we get to our home I call the local PD and an officer comes by so I can show them where the wounded deer is. He shoots it and takes me back home. It did a few thousand in damage to her car. I've never been to McGuire, Loring, Travis, NKP and final duty site was Almaden AFS above Silicon Valley or "Home."

Surely there must be a coordinated method to obtain these dead hogs, get them to a wild game processor and distribute the meat to food banks. Local and state governments can fund this as it's a win-win result. Add a paid bounty on each hog delivered would be some incentive to eradicate these pests.

The entire premise of this video is wrong: Hunters eat venison and wild pork. Deer are not invasive. They were here before humans. There are some states where white tail deer have encroached on mule deer, and they are hunted. It is possible in some states to claim a road killed deer by contacting wildlife authorities. There are so many factual errors in this video that I couldn’t even watch the whole thing

That won't really do anything. The problem is that hunting isn't very efficient. The number of hunters in a given area as well as permission for accessing property. Ideally a wave of people moving across the land, in a controlled manner would be the best at flushing out every animal. From there, you'd have people pick off specific animals.
