I'm 44 & have been gaming since my dad got me a Nintendo for Christmas in 1986 when I was 6 years old. I would sit in front of the TV for hours on end thru the years on my NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, Genesis, Dreamcast, GBA, Gameboy, DS etcetera. I just can't get into gaming hardly ever anymore. Maybe 3-5 games a year grab my attention & that's about it. GOD I miss the good old days!!

There really is something. Idk if its nostalgia or what but it just doesn't feel like games today have the same creative charm.
@grimreamer2512Ай бұрын
The biggest difference beteen games today and old games was writing. They had to sell a story with limited graphics and processing power, so they doubled down on selling a good story to spark our imagination. I grew up with the snes, and countless games did this. I can still go back and play Super metroid or Donkey Kong Country 2 and enjoy the hell out of it. The charm is still there. Same with countless PS1 titles that look like potato, but gave you a story experience that was unforgettable. With the exception of a few hits, the last story I found memerable was Dragon Age Origins. Fresh world that had game of thrones vibes before game of thrones. I havent played it since it came out, but i distinctly remember enjoying all of the story
@Seoul_SoldierАй бұрын
Hard agree. Look at the writing for something like Planescape: Torment vs Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Writing is the biggest letdown with modern games.
@daniellesiak6209Ай бұрын
I totally agree, I say the same with sound design and atmosphere. Detailing and story setting, sound design on things like og Resi evil just can't be matched today. They knew a games limits so they were so creative elsewhere. I still believe Manhunts design, sound and atmosphere are unmatched today

Games nowadays are designed by committee. Monetisation is more important than fun, graphics matter more than gameplay and retention is more important than being competitive. Essentially everything that made games fun is slowly being pushed out to be as sellable as possible. Games are now stuck in the pop music phase of the late 90s early 00s. Dark souls started a movement or counter-culture, fortnite and overwatch killed the momentum by showing how much idiots would spend on currency and loot boxes. We need a game to come along and outsell everything whilst not treating the player as something to drain cash out of.

I was late to Breath of the Wild, 2020 i think i played that, that game made me feel like a child again in a world of wonder where anything is impossible and i felt like i was personally on this adventure. Hey man I feel you with Splinter Cell - I fucking loved those games, especially 2! I would say the Sniper Elite games tickle that itch I got with it. The maps in the latest one are huge and you find the side missions organically through the game. You can break stealth and get into a gunfight, but if you're playing on Medium or Hard difficulty, you're pretty much fucked. The last mission I did, took 3 hours too :D . Defo worth a shot if you haven't already

Oh I hear you! I rarely play games anymore, let alone new games after 2017. However, these are the games I would suggest based on the love and passion that went into them, not just a result of a checklist for modern gaming with dumb gameplay: Must plays because they’re super fun with loads of passion: DOOM: Eternal, Prey (2017), and the absolute banger that is also original: Hi-Fi Rush. Sekiro is amazing, but it can be punishing. Open world: Tears of the Kingdom/Breath of the wild. (Only one that preserves the sense of wonder until the end in this genre.) Death Stranding is unique, immersive, and surprisingly zen. Platformer: Alice: Madness returns, A hat in time, or Hell Pie. (Obvi: Super Mario Odyssey.) Stealth (aka a dead genre): Hitman: World of assassination, Mark of the Ninja, or Dishonored. (Turn off the x-ray vision nonsense.) Metal Gear is one of a kind. There’s no alternative, unfortunately. Oh, and games may be advanced and technically more solid now, but the incessant remakes of the classics prove they’d rather make easy money than leverage that power to create something special. (The only applications of “creativity” are in the monetization and activism areas in the modern “AAA” gaming space unfortunately.)

I think a lot of the issue is definitely the lack of time spent on creating the gameplay. People expect sequels to come out in far too short a time. And a lot of game companies just seem to use that impatience to their advantage to cashgrab. Think about how much flack people are giving over waiting for elder scrolls 6 and GTA 6.
@ItsBoots2Ай бұрын
We've become so accustomed to this 1 year turn around cycle that alot of games don't take the risk in developing something new. It's just reuse the same IP that we know will sell and release what could be classified as a DLC for 89$

What? Morrowind came out in something 2003, Oblivion 2006 and Skyrim 2011. Each game had massive gameplay changes. Time is not the issue. We used to get AAA title games with massive leaps in gameplay/graphics every 2 or 3 years in the 2000s.

I do not agree on most of your points, because I think a lot of it is purely based on nostalgia and emotion and sometimes you are comparing two things, which cannot be compared. Like Skyrim vs Call of Modern Black Ops. BUT I agree on the notion, that gaming changed and most of it not for the better. The emphasis is too much on graphics, micro transactions, and feeding the crowd with another sequel to a popular franchise. I swear to god, if Ubisoft slaps "Assassin's Creed" on another random game that has nothing to do with the basic idea of what Assassin's Creed used to be Imma lose my fucking shit. Luckily the gaming industry is very big nowadays, which means it diversified a lot and there's plenty of games which may fit your taste. It just became harder to find them. I mean there are indie games that are simply breathtaking and just hands down fun. Like Carrion, Signalis and Inside. And sometimes there are games from bigger developers which are also really great. The most fun I had in years was with Armored Core VI. The presentation is spot on. Nothing too simple, nothing to fancy. The story is interesting enough and in fact very deep if you let it suck you into it and the gameplay is as basic as it can get. Here's your giant fucking robot, slap parts onto it to make it go boom and then go into a level and make shit go boom as efficiently as possible. Too hard? Oh then get better and change some parts. Still too hard? Aww change parts. Still too hard? Well you can't grind, you can't go another route, you can't use a secret weapon, you can't do a bunch of sidequests to waste your time. You either master this machine and beat that boss or you're stuck here forever. And then you go out there, change that weapon, change that part and smush that boss. Not a billion game mechanics. Not a billion side quests. Not a lot to do. Just make your space murder machine as efficient as possible and that's it. What a great game.
