Why Don't Waldorf Dolls Have Faces?

Waldorf dolls are known for having very minimal facial features. But why is that?

Doesn't having the doll sleeping with its eyes closed make it more closed ended because the baby is always sleeping?

That's a good question, Rebecca. Some Waldorf teachers (myself included) feel that the best dolls would have no facial features at all, but we've found that most families prefer at least a suggestion of a face when purchasing a doll. It is true that the embroidered eyes on the Heavy Baby dolls appear to be closed, but the features are so subtle that I've found they do not hinder a child's imagination.

As a child, I prefer a doll with a face. A nice friendly natural face instead of the faceless "something".

Do you know of anyone in the US who repairs dolls like the Nanchen babies? The terrry cloth tore in a few places on my daughter’s doll which I tried to fix but it doesn’t look so great.

I don't know specifically of any doll repair services, however, anyone who is handy with a needle and thread ought to be able to mend any tears.

Amish dolls have literally no faces.

Yes! I had an amish doll as a child, the doll itself was a very simple soft body doll, it just had a head arms and a torso (no legs, hands/fingers, hair or other features) a simple dress over the top, long so that it covered the missing legs, and a bonnet. I loved the doll very much :)
