Excellent KingAir cost analysis. And those numbers are for a 200; super king air is more. I had a Part 135 Air Taxi in the eighties at KSQL (San Carlos, Ca) near SFO. I was Chief Pilot and Check Airman(retired now) as well as one of the charter pilots with other pilots. We had ASEL & ASMEL recips too. Mikey, I’ve enjoyed Ice Pilots and Buffalo Joe. As an ATP/CFII/ A&P, I could relate to everything except the frigid cold weather. You were lucky to have a Dad who showed you and your brother the ropes. But you guys took the ball and ran with it keeping Buffalo flying. Creative drive and initiative

Exactly Kenneth, Not only do I let all the Adds run (here in Australia some of the adverts go for nearly 40 minutes!) When I am at home I often start the videos again (including Adds) from episode zero, It makes for a fantastic background on my Projector?surround sound stereo system in my shed while i"m tinkering away on my cars or building R/C Planes. Plane Savers is by far the best KZbin Channel I've ever come across.

Funny you mention the GLEX.. I just got home from work, having a bite to eat watching Plane Savers after sending off one of ours overseas this evening. A lot of the general public don't realise the costs involved in operating any aircraft, let alone a King Air etc! Purchase price and maintenance costs are only the tip of the iceberg! Fantastic episode once again, and thank you to the whole plane savers community sharing the love! Oh, and guten tag Stella! :)

Thunderstorm research was also on the agenda in 1969 on behalf of RAE Bedford and the Bracknell Met Office. This was a project with a view to the avoidance of thunderstorm tops by cruising supersonic airliners. One of our Dakotas (Charlie Tango) was fitted with some special equipment at Bedford and our job was to measure the tops.

An interesting insight into the costings of running an aircraft. I can now see why all the equipment and spares required for DTD were not just loaded in to an Electra and flown to Montreal. That would have cost 50 or 60k maybe??? Plus, it would be taking the Electra away from customer earning duties! Congratulations to Mikey and all your supporters for that fine accumulated amount of funds. There really are some fabulous genuinely interested fans out there who really want to see your plane take to the air again. Regards, David Jones, Coventry, UK.

The most interesting number that jumps out on the DTD donations is the YT clicks are the same as the raw donations. Good tutorial on the commercial vs private costs. More fannie's in the seats more cheaper. :) Then compare a King Air over a corporate jet and it's night and day in terms of operational costs. Plus a King Air significantly expands airport access.
@CAPFlyer5 жыл бұрын
Mikey, love ya bud, but I think you need to double check your numbers. :) Globals run about $8000 - $10000 per hour. Makes it about $80K round trip YKF - YHU - YKF, about double the retail round trip for a King Air 100. The fact that it'll make the trip in half the time of the King Air and do it non-stop is what reduces the cost. I know you guys like using per mile costs (I did when I worked for Air Tahoma too), but pax side, they usually use hourly rates - especially with the jets since time is more the factor than the distance.

They calculated using an airplane that was twice as big as what they needed, King Air, when Wikipedia says Buffalo has Travel Airs and Cessna 310s which are the right size, and if neither of them are pilots themselves, they can still hire only one pilot and stop on the way to sleep. Are they really not pilots? And really no Buffalo airplane is going anywhere with a direct commercial flight to Montreal?

That would be neat. How about grafting Merlins onto a DC3. That would look and sound AWESOME.
@davestarr71125 жыл бұрын
@@crazybrit-nasafan I don't know if Merlin's and a DC3 have ever been done, but Merlins on a DC-4 (same size engines) has been done, commercially. Canadair built 71 of them, they were called North Stars and flew in airline service for some years. They must have sounded sweet, but there's no real advantage ... you're basically replacing one 1200hp engine with another 1200hp engine. Also to use Merlins you need to drag along radiators, coolant and all the other weight and complication of a liquid-cooled engine instead of a simple air-cooled radial. And there are still many, many R-1830s available, many more were built than were Merlins. Bo doubt through, Merlins would sound sweeter, especially at takeoff.
@crazybrit-nasafan5 жыл бұрын
@@davestarr7112 Hi David. I know of the North star, or noisystar as the crews called it. A great looking aircraft. I doubt very much anyone has grafted Merlins to a Dak and I think the later versions of 1600+hp would make for a sweet aircraft. Even the semi angular radiators would probably produce less drag that a two row radial but it All depends on the rest of the airframe aerodynamics. Merlins suited the Lanc but Hercules didn't. Vice versa with the Halifax. But just thinking of aesthetics and sound it would be awesome. Going to have to build a model of this idea now, just to see how it looks. Best regards. Greg.

I've processed many g5, g6, and global 6000 and just for landing where I work at KJAX just for touching down runs them around $600 after all set and done, fuel, services they can fly out with a bill upwards of $35,000 that's quick turn, over nights add more and hangar space around $1000 a night, add aviation to any sentence and it's like you're adding dollar signs to words.

The public has no idea how cheap flying commercial is today. They complain about seat size etc... They haven't a clue what it costs to operate an airline and also how much cheaper tickets are today than they were in the 80s and that's not figuring in inflation the base ticket prices are cheaper now...
@davestarr71125 жыл бұрын
Very much agree, Robert. I've been in the commercial side of aviation since the 1950s (why yes I am old, thank you very much, LoL) and it amazes me how low fares are now ...and how much better aircraft are, regardless of the small seats and smaller lavatories. When you look at the true cost of airline flights versus even the true costs of driving a car (when you can), the savings are amazing.
@dknowles603 жыл бұрын
i dont know about that. all i know is uncle sam flew me couch on north west air lines from Seoul south korea to detroit michigan for 550 dollars a distance of 6600 miles that is .083 cents per mile in 1988. now wages have not gone up much since 1988 they cost more today per mile unless you get a south west on sale. yes the seats were much larger in 1988 and i had 2 meals and a furit bar on that flight
