What if the building blocks of our future cities were modular, shipping container-like units, akin to oversized LEGO pieces? Although modular construction has existed for more than a century, only recent techniques have made it possible to efficiently assemble and disassemble a modular building without jeopardizing its structural integrity.
It also has the potential to speed up recovery in disaster-stricken communities, enabling swift, efficient reconstruction. Still, this future hinges not just on technology but also on policy. Current building codes and zoning laws often lag behind such innovation.
For modular construction to flourish, it is going to require local communities to adapt their rules and regulations to accommodate new techniques.

My highschool had temporary buildings in the 2000s. When they demolished the school in 2010s the tempary buildings are the only things that still exist.

35:30 but we do use concepts similar to the ones in Lego in actual construction.

Good podcast, better subject. Our Company ECOR is designed for this purpose, 100% recycled and 100% recyclable. IN the near future, all new buildings will be heavily recyclable simply for the residual value the recyclability provides.

Recycled concrete can't be used to construct new skyscrapers because it's to fragile. Using it would cause the building to collapse.

Your comment is incorrect. Recycled concrete is used as aggregate in structural applications and has been for some time. At appropriate replacement rates the reduction in compressive strength is easily accommodated.

People move for jobs. In Versailles ky they took a old old school and turned it into something else. Restaurant and housing.

I hope that we can have the 30-70% of buildings that are not meant to be bespoke.

Isn't this more of a US-only problem? I don't see that many buildings torn down here in Europe. They do get renovated, sometimes to a point where only the facade remains, but it's not like we have to evacuate whole cities just because they are not cool anymore. I can't imagine container homes becoming mainstream in Europe unless the existing buildings get flattened by nukes or something.

It's cheaper & quicker to simply demolish a structure & send unwanted materials to landfill. Recycling construction waste needs to become legislation before companies will implement this. There are a few companies that do deconstruct buildings & repurpose / reuse / recycle materials. Male only discussion? Where are the ladies?
