Why Don't You Review More Plugins?

In this video I discuss reasons behind why I choose not to review plugins and why I favour reviewing hardware. It's not that plugins don't interest me, it's more a case that there's really not that many great plugins releasing that are worthwhile creating content on. I create the hardware reviews so that people can hear how the hardware sounds and works before buying it. The majority of plugins have a demo period of 14 days so that you can demo and hear how it sounds in your workflow. So I feel there is little need for me to show you have it sounds and how it works.

As soon as I purchased my first hardware and realized the difference in sound quality compared to plugins I cried for the thousands I spent on plugins and realized I could have gotten some serious hardware instead 😢

I made the exact same mistake as you. I spent a fortune on plugins, thinking they would transform my sound. Every time a new plugin was released, I bought it. Then one day, I took a step back and realized something simple: they’re almost all the same. The only real difference between these plugins is the interface design. In reality, the sound is nearly identical. Each plugin uses the same algorithms, the same functions, and the same settings, just wrapped in a different visual package. The result? Thousands of dollars wasted. More than $4,000, $6,000, maybe even $10,000 spent on tools that, in the end, didn’t make a real difference in my music. Then one day, I had a realization. I understood that I was throwing away my money and my time. So, I made a choice: I invested in my first piece of hardware. That was back in 2010. And that’s when it hit me-the difference between a plugin and real hardware is like night and day. A plugin is still just digital; it’s an emulation. Hardware is physical, real, tangible. It’s like comparing a Ferrari in a video game to a real Ferrari on the road. The experience is completely different. Since then, I’ve completely changed the way I work. I only invest in real gear: EQs, compressors, limiters, reverbs… real reverbs, not digital ones. Sure, I still use four or five plugins, but that’s it. Everything else? Totally useless. Filling up your computer with 40 reverbs, 40 EQs, 40 compressors, 40 delays is pointless. In the end, you never truly master them because there are just too many. With hardware, it’s a completely different approach. You take the time to learn how to use each piece of gear properly. A hardware EQ, for example, can be used in hundreds of different ways, depending on what you’re trying to achieve. But most importantly, the sound is there instantly. No endless clicking, no scrolling through presets. You turn a knob, you listen, and you feel the sound evolving in real time. A lot of people don’t understand this difference. Some say that plugins are just as good. Good for them. But let’s be honest-they’ve probably never worked with real gear. At the end of the day, everyone is free to work however they want. But one thing is certain: a plugin will never replace hardware. Since I changed my workflow, everything has become smoother. I’m more focused on listening, more in tune with the subtle changes in sound, more connected to the music. Because with real gear, you’re working in the moment, by feel, through true sound creation. And honestly, it makes all the difference.

I like UAD plugins, such as the 102 Tape or a 1176 on certain tracks. But I absolutely love the sound of analog gear like the Manley Vari-Mu on the master bus or the Massive Passive EQ, with its incredible depth and 3D sound. In my opinion, analog hardware is simply unmatched. Plugins often sound too flat, digital, and two-dimensional.

@FnFFoxFace spot on. This is exactly it. I have zero interest in 99% of the plugins that release. So reviewing them doesn't carry the same enthusiasm. Ultimately I need to love talking about something and want to have conversations in the comments about it. Like this video will achieve. I get sick of watching videos on plugins where the reviewer says it's incredible and a game changer. That it's replaced 3 plugins they used to use. Usual BS. Then video ends and they uninstall it. Onto the next video saying the exact same thing.

I totally agree Paul, that's why I'm watching your channel. Maybe you could make two video series about plugins: 1) the plugins you actually use, 2) assuming you can't use HW, what plugins would you try to emulate them with?!! Interesting! An easy test would be with the Elysia Nvelope, plus there you can demonstrate the difference in transient handling and shelf equalization, that would be a good check; besides, it's not one of the most expensive equipment. I hope the idea helps you. Greetings,

@patricioandres2562 I have been thinking lately how can I review a plugin without reviewing a plugin. There's plenty of people doing this kind of content. So I'm trying to think up a way of doing it different. And I don't want it to be a case of reviewing plugins and being negative about them. I was thinking maybe something along the lines of would I use it. Does this plugin make it into my workflow. 99% wouldn't though. And would get very boring of 10 videos where none make it in. The plugins i actually use is a good one. And I generally have reviewed most of those already. I like the idea of assuming I can't use hardware what plugin would I use instead. I'm thinking maybe a series along the lines of approaching the review as if I have pro q4 does this plugin give me something pro q4 doesn't. Match the curves compare the audio. Does it sound identical. If so we don't need it. Or maybe just a series picking plugins apart exposing them as the same plugins wrapped in a new skin. There's a few options I'm thinking about.

@@AudioAnimalsStudio Interesting; I completely agree that it makes no sense or contributes anything to make reviews of all the plugins that are coming out. Perhaps it would be useful to make a selection of the best plugins (or as we were saying, those that you could use if you don't have HW); you leave that as a list, it is fixed, it is your choice of the best for example on 2/15/25; and every time something better appears to replace one of those plugins on the list or worthy of adding to the list (for example, an Eq that sounds better in the lows or highs than ProQ) a video is made with the review and/or the update of the list (ranking). This makes it clear that, although you are always privately reviewing new plugins, you will only upload videos of those that are worthy of being added to the ranking of those that you would use if you didn't have HW or that could be well complemented with HW. You could do it by categories, for: mix and master eq, compressor, transient, limiter, reverb, etc., etc. This way you also avoid badmouthing other plugins, a task that would never end! But, I insist, it would be very useful, and perhaps the first video to make in this series (playlist), the comparison between HW and SW at least with one that has its -official- equivalent as Nvelope told you seems to me a good demonstration, you cover compromises and equalization and it is the official SW version. With that you demonstrate why you prefer HW to SW. Naturally, you can do the same with a compressor, limiter, etc. But that remains like video 1 (or more if necessary), even there you can finish with the comparison of a complete mix comparing HW and SW versions. And, from this comparison / demonstration you start the saga of your ranking of plugins with which you "could" manage not to have HW and those that you could add to your HW chain, a list that you only update with the plugins that qualify (approve). With this you can have a very interesting playlist on your channel. And to these contents you could add -if you want to make videos- a series: If I can't use my Alpha how could I emulate it? My Carnaby doesn't work, with what plugin could I emulate it? I hope it helps, greetings

@patricioandres2562 all very interesting and is something I'm actively thinking about and trying to work out what brings most value whilst staying unbiased, honest and non click bait. These are the key attributes I want to keep for the channel. What I think I'll do is create video 1 in the series as a pilot to open the discussion find out what people would like to see. Then I can use this as market research to develop the right concept for both what the people on the channel want and what I want. Could be more like a plugin shootout. What compressor out these top compressor plugins achieves the best result. Then a new plugin releases. Now let's see if this compressor is any better using the same audio from before. There's definitely something that could be done. I just don't want to review a plugin for the sake of reviewing it.

@riktascale4 you could do 2 Pandoras and 1 Rhea but then the issue there is that the calypso will only use 6 of 8 available io. I feel the Pandora is just a multiband dione. So my recommendation would be to choose a dione. Then at a later date, get another rack and add 2 Pandoras and 2 2 slot modules. That way you'll use up every slot. With the calypso you can link between two titan racks. Then you can do what I've done and create channel strips. 4 eqs and a calypso in 1 rack and 4 compressors in another rack.

@ that is very true. One of the problems that I have in my old mind is that music has become too easy to make with the DAW, Home recording etc…. Because it’s so easy to do these days, verybody thinks they can do it so everybody does. The problem that presents is that there is so much shit music out there that the good music has a really hard time finding its way to the surface. When people had to go out and spend real money to get real gear, had to collaborate with others, and an artist would work for a full year or two to create a new album to release. There was anticipation and excitement about what had been created during that time. Nowadays, with all of the shit music out there I have a really hard time becoming a fan of much of any of the new artists. I also don’t like the trickle release of one song a month or two….. The public has never cared. What equipment was used to make their favorite songs. That’s always been true so even today they won’t care what gear was used. It’s certainly a different time and I have a bunch of hardware gear that cost me a fortune and I have hundreds of plug-ins that also cost a small fortune and I use them when I need to. There has always been garbage music. Not everything that was recorded with analog outboard gear, and a mixing console was good. But because there’s so much music now because it’s so easy. Before home recording became so huge you had to put out a lot of effort to actually go into the studio and record your songs and then try to release them not everything was good of course but there was way more effort put into it. There has always been bad music, But there hasn’t been so much of a never ending sea of it like there is today due to the ease of creating it today.

Just because it’s new, doesn’t mean it’s better. As an example, Windows Vista was shit following XP pro. There are lots of other examples out there. And you do understand that if these companies didn’t have real gear, most of the plug-ins out, there would’ve never been invented because it would’ve had nothing to emulate. I’m with PAUL on this one plug-ins are boring. I don’t care who the hottest mixer is. I really don’t. Next week will be somebody different. And I know it’s probably not gonna be me so I would rather enjoy working with my national clients on my REAL gear. And on another note, since I run a higher end commercial recording studio, my business model caters to other engineers to rent my studio. I have never received a single phone call from a client (either a national famous person or a local up-and-coming artist) asking if I have a specific plug-in. It never happens. But I get phone calls all the time (at least a couple times a week) from people just because I have a specific piece of gear. So you can put your smug attitude up your ass.

A top mixer can get a good result anyway and may choose plugins because it lets them mix more tunes and make more money. So they accept the tradeoff in quality for workflow reasons. It’s up to each person what to prioritise. Most listeners don’t care about sound quality as much as the people who made the music

@@ozzy3ml I agree. The public has never, ever cared what gear was used to make their favorite songs. The people that care are the tech heads and musicians making the music. The Musician will always care which piece of gear is helping them create his/her specific sound (as far as their own instruments go) They may not know about which microphone, compressor, or preamp is being used. Not sure if you saw my earlier comment, but I run a very large hybrid set up. Most of the time I will always try to use my outboard gear because it’s much more fun and it just sounds bigger and better. It really does. But like the session I ran today I’m fixing recorded stems that were done by another studio across town that the band was very unhappy with. So today I’m using pretty much all plug-ins. Both have their place for sure but I think it’s finding the right tool for the right job at the right moment that matters.

@nicefish10 likewise, I'll have people get in contact requesting their music is run through specific pieces of hardware. Never once have i had someone request a specific plugin. I feel for the studios that are plugin only studios. It must be so hard to compete with hardware studios. What sets studios using hardware apart from them is the fact that you can achieve a sound unobtainable using plugins. Everyone can achieve the plugin sound. If this guy had the knowledge of Jason Joshua he could achieve the exact same sound as him at home.

I love plugins tbh, never been arsed whether a plugin emulates a bit of gear, only whether it works and sounds good, analog gear like compressors/eqs, no point in having them in my set up, plugins are more practical for me, hardware synths, different story 😊

I really wished I got into HW sooner in my career. I have spend over $5gs JUST on acustica plugins, over the years. Yeah its easy to say : “oh its just $99 compared to $3000” but the reality is that most will buy hundreds of such plugins. Now, some of them do sound pretty damn similar to the hardware. Really and truly. The hardware just feels like playing a game on easy mode vs on hard mode. Yeah, you can best it on harrld - but its HARDER. I can see the expense not being worth it for everyone, truly. But I love my hardware, especially for bus work.

Once I went hardware I will NEVER go back to plugins exclusively. The sonic differences popped my cherry once I tried a few pieces of gear. Plugin companies are using the same algorithms and codes wrapped in gui. They have a use but they cannot be my mainstay.

@PurpleMusicProductions and then I went and bought a plugin this morning because it was on sale. Didn't need it. I just thought it's worth having just in case I ever needed it. So whilst I'm fully aware I'm being targeting for sales with marketing I'm still falling for it. To be fair though was a £299 for £8
